okay so this might be coming a bit late but i just really wanted to talk about this

So yeah, Numbers 96 says this, and it’s probably him just boasting about his power and such. And yeah, he’s gotten stronger, and such and such and such, but here’s the thing.

Back in his first appearance, he’s also pretty damn strong, and establishes himself as a strong and powerful Numbers, but he makes a pretty fatal error-not only assuming that Yuuma’s under his control completely without checking, but also this:

He activates his own monster effect when it’s completely and utterly unnecessary-Black Mist’s attack already far surpasses Hope’s and can deal plenty of damage, and adding the extra damage wouldn’t have won him the duel straight off, so there was no point to doing this.

Doing so leaves him with no Overlay Units to use when Hope is resurrected and Black Mist’s ATK is reduced to zero, so he wouldn’t be able to force a draw at the very least and find some means to eliminate the scanty lifepoints Tetsuo has the next turn (if he hadn’t used this effect, Tetsuo would still have only 1200 LP left to Black Mist’s 3000, a significant advantage still). His hastiness and arrogance and love of using his own power leads to Black Mist’s downfall that duel.

Guess what happens this duel?

Oops, he did it again. Used an overlay unit when it was completely unnecessary. This leaves Black Mist with only a single Overlay Unit, and when Astral activates Superior Overlay, it forces Black Mist to use up its last unit to save it from destruction-which means again, it’s left vulnerable to Hope Ray’s powered up attack, and Black Mist is forced to resort to using Barian’s Force to rank up himself and force a draw, instead of being able to use Black Mist’s effect to destroy Hope Ray (and come to think of it, Astral might not have used Bakudan’s effect either, and so Black Mist wouldn’t have had used Judge Master’s overlay unit effect either, and so the ranked up Judge Devil would have also saved itself from destruction using Superior Overlay’s effect, and also negated Hope Ray’s effect…) EDIT: AND NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT, ASTRAL WOULDN’T HAVE EVEN BEEN ABLE TO USE SUPERIOR OVERLAY THAT TURN, SINCE THE OVERLAY UNITS WOULD HAVE EITHER BEEN EQUAL OR BLACK MIST AND JUDGE DEVIL COMBINED WOULD HAVE MORE THAN HOPE RAY. SHIT.

(If we go for LP comparison again, Astral would have been left with 1600 LP-or 2100 LP if Judge Buster’s effect hadn’t been used and he was upgraded to Judge Devil while still holding the other overlay unit-leaving the two being fairly equal with Black Mist’s 2500 LP, but Black Mist still has a slight advantage. )

Basically, Black Mist might have gotten stronger, but he hasn’t changed one bit-still reckless, still proud of his power, and it still leads to his failure.

And can I just say that I absolutely love love love the writers for not forgetting this core personality trait of Numbers 96 and consistently implementing it in his duels? Because yes.

tl'dr zexal duels are incredibly character driven and you should watch zexal. yes.

I was curious what's the reason behind Jey's human like appearance and human clothes? 👀

SFDGhjf Okay the LORE reason;

Is that thematically Jey (and the Angels) are kinda meant to be almost "Astral World” version foils to the Barian Emps.

1; Having human forms / 2; Expanding nuances to one side in the alien war / 3; Possessing Rank-Up cards that offer a new challenge to Yuma and co,

etcetera cetera

Jey also canonically prefers his human form to his archangel one.

BUT REST ASSURED IT EXISTS ! ! (not refined, but it exists fghsjk )

The extended Astral World Lore™️ is actually a fairly recent iteration of him. Only been in development for over a year now.

Kuriboh Cookbook Pattern
