I know a lot of people see the way angels (and in particular Gabriel, since he’s the only named angel we see in the story) perform gender in ultrakill as being transmasc, but I also think he can be transfem if you read the story at the different angle: masculinity is upheld as a status in uktrakill, a performance that ties into patriarchal notions of religion. The status is taken away from those who cannot conform to the norms and expectations of those in power, and the entire notion of “gender” itself revolves around power and the way it is wielded. All of this is a classic transfem experience where the only gender that exists is the subjugator and the subjugated, and any deviance outside of that is heavily punished as heresy, heresy, unspeakable heresy.
therefore, you can see Gabriel’s arc in act 2and his slaughtering of the council as an act which aligns himself back with what he had always seen himself as. Being feminine doesn’t exist under the council’s hierarchy, but Gabriel is no longer bound to them anymore. He is free to be whoever he wants to be now, whoever she wants to be, if you think it so.
