can i ask for your thoughts on dio brando ?
eyou sure can buddy.
so here’s the thing about dio; almost everything that makes him an interesting and nuanced villain is shit you have to go dig for. thanks to keegan ‘kindergraph’ swamp-wizard’s encyclopedic knowledge of dio brando i have a lot of these tidbits to chew on
jojo’s bizarre adventure is fantastic at getting CLOSE to saying something meaningful or interesting and then completely fucking missing the mark by a mile. at its heart, phantom blood is a story about class.or at least it would have been if hirohiko araki understood what the demon possessing him that is the true author of JJBA actually intended.
dio brando is poor, abused, and destitute. jonathan joestar was born into money and has everything he ever wanted or needed and then some. dio had to come to the realization that anything he wanted or needed in life he had to take by force and get himself. this was never something jonathan ever had to think about. and that’s where the resentment comes from.
the premise for dio as a villain is that he thinks that, to have anything worth having in life, he has to take it by force. and he wants everything. simply put the way he was raised made it so he never had any option to think of the world as anything but eat or be eaten, so when he sees people like jonathan who have never lifted a finger but have everything, its safe to assume that in dio’s eyes that’s some sort of fundamental cosmic imbalance
and to a degree, our comrade dio brando is right. it isnt fair that jonathan has everything while so many people have nothing, and it was just a complete roulette at birth.
so dio’s whole thing i think becomes, from the very first moment they meet: i will take what jonathan has, not just so i have it, but so he doesn’t, which undeniably checks out even to the point where dio literally grafts his own disembodied head onto
the whole concept of inherited power vs earned power even shows up in SDC if you think about it, because dio had to go through being shot with the stand arrow to awaken his power, but as soon as he did that he retroactively let the entire joestar line inherit this power that he had to claw his way out of the ocean for. Dio’s stand is a direct parallel to jotaro’s stand; dio spends ages perfecting his technique. jotaro is able to unlock the same abilities just on the merit of having the right bloodline. and jotaro honestly, barely has a dog in this fight beyond blood feuding. it’s all about inheritance.
so i think that dio is a REALLY interesting villain in that he is the perfect foil to jonathan, and in many ways the entire joestar family, but nothing ever manifested of it beyond the initial concept that dio wants to take what the joestars have.
like obviously as a PERSOn dio brando is a piece of shit but as a character? tons of potential
tl;dr: dio brando IS the ceo of antifa.

I’m starting my liveblog of the JJBA manga with, of course, phantom blood.

And I gotta say? This outfit is already completely superb. Trying to figure out what is happening with the brim of his hat has irreparably changed me as a person.
Time to buckle up.
