Course Reflection: Research and Investigation Skills Development

Throughout the duration of this course, Research and Investigative Skills Development I, I had the opportunity to acquire a wealth of knowledge and skills that have significantly enriched my academic and professional journey. My primary objectives were to enhance my writing prowess, hone my interviewing skills, and elevate my storytelling abilities, and this course provided the ideal platform for achieving these goals.

Each assignment presented a unique opportunity for growth. Whether it was through completing assignments, engaging in discussions, or receiving constructive feedback, every aspect of the course contributed to my learning experience. One standout moment was the final assignment, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. During Week 3, I had the chance to reflect on the feedback provided by Professor Carstens. This reflection empowered me to refine my storytelling during Week 4. It's worth noting that I previously had uncertainties about how to properly credit photos, but Professor Carstens' guidance clarified this for me and enabled me to seamlessly incorporate photo credits into my articles.

Another valuable lesson I learned was the art of crafting compelling infographics. Although I had prior experience in creating infographics, this course challenged me to approach them from a news perspective. In the realm of news articles and social media, visual aids like graphs and infographics are vital. Thus, the ability to create them while citing reliable sources became a crucial skill for my desired career in the news industry. While I did encounter areas for improvement in my infographic work, I am grateful for the assignment that deepened my understanding of the significance and creativity behind infographics.

Perhaps the most important lesson I took away from this course transcends academics. It's the realization that perseverance is key, no matter the circumstances. The demands of our coursework mirror the challenges we'll face in the professional world. Even during times of illness or personal difficulty, I learned that it's essential to maintain our commitment and strive for excellence. Moreover, I had the privilege of experiencing understanding and supportive faculty, such as Professor Carstens, who accommodated my situation, a lesson that will undoubtedly serve me well as I transition into the news industry.

In sum, this course not only met but exceeded my expectations, and its impact will resonate as I embark on my journey in the work world, specifically within the dynamic field of news. The skills and insights I've gained have equipped me to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with confidence and competence.
