Something bitterly mournful twisted in Sandy's stomach, and he grabbed Mouse's hand and squeezed it. "I'll be right here for you. Always," he whispered.

Finding the cat took a grand total of thirty seconds. It sniffed Mouse's hand and curled up next to his legs, in reach of pets. Sandy took up the spot next to Mouse, and held his hand, listening as he spoke.

"He'll be right down," Sandy promised, blinking away tears. The sun wasn't close to rising yet, but the horizon was lightening ever-so-slightly. He could see the stars through the haze of light pollution, and hoped Mouse would know they were there, watching over him. "He's only up for a short while, and he loves you too much to stay away. He'll always come back for you, no matter how far apart."

Mouse couldn’t remember much of the passing days, in and out of a blurry consciousness that gave a merciful break to the slow finale of his life. He could hear Sandy sometimes, moving about, taking to him, stroking Milo’s hair away from his sweat slicked forehead. The record player he had watched Sandy fix played quietly somewhere, but he couldn’t recognise the words. Was it his favourite song? Did he have a favourite song?

He woke up blearily. The window was dark, the distant glow of the city streetlights casting rays that caught the glimmer of falling dust like snow. Milo reached out to touch it, mesmired. Panic suddenly struck him like ice. “I have to open the shop-“ He mumbled, trying to get up.

"Of course," Sandy said, brushing Mouse's hair from his face. His decline had been quick, and worse than Sandy'd expected. It started with Mouse being cold and exhausted, but able to form coherent sentences- now, he seemed to be losing all sense of time and space. "You've had a long couple days, Mouse. Some decent rest will do you good."

He helped Mouse sit up, propping up the pillows so he'd have something soft to rest against. "Oh, Mouse," he murmured, and leaned forward to press a kiss to Mouse's forehead. "I'll get the cat for you. I love you very much, you know that, right? Close your eyes for a moment."

"Yes, I do," Sandy said. His memory- though fragmented and falling to pieces- had blessedly preserved the quiet spring day in one of the quieter City parks. He'd made their food, and as they sat eating amongst the flowers, Mouse had laughed at a bad joke and leaned close against Sandy's side, warm and happy.

"Let's try some water," he said quietly after a moment, bringing the glass to Mouse's lips. "I'm not upset at very much, I'm just worried about you. I don't like it when you're sick- it always worries me. But you always get better, and you will this time, too. I even have the week off work, so I don't have to leave you alone with the cat."

"Mouse." Sandy grasped his arm with a gentle hand, guiding him back to the bed. His voice was quiet and melancholic, but fond. Full of love. "You don't have to open the shop, okay? It's a little bit late, your android and I have been taking care of that. You're a little bit ill, it wouldn't be good for you to move too much."

He tucked a soft blanket that smelled faintly of jet fuel and flowers under Mouse's chin, and wiped the sweat off Mouse's brow with a piece of cloth. "Would you like some water? I've made a bit of food, too, if you want to try to eat."
