hello there, i have a question-what do you think John does in his free time? (if this is described in the comics I apologize, i literally only today started reading them) Does he do sudoku? Take walks? Drink and look into a mirror that shows the past? Watches tv? Thank you in advance
outside of john's burden / obligation to the occult, he's really just a regular guy. he goes for walks, he talks with his neighbors, goes down to the pub to drink pints with his mates, and sometimes he even helps his neighbors with their inconvenient need for problem solving.
sometimes he travels to meet friends in other places, take roadtrips with them, he likes to read the newspaper, read books, watch tv.
he doesn't do anything spectacular, but he also rarely has the opportunity to have these moments. they're something he holds onto though because that's where his humanity lies most.

i’m late to watching constantine: house of mystery but i really hope that this budding trend of making john’s horrors his own mental health as punishment doesn’t become the typical thing.
that short was really just 30 minutes of trauma porn that was eventually blamed as being john’s fault because of his own trauma with his past experiences and i’m... livid. someone really sat down and wrote that john getting murdered by his loved ones over and over again for centuries was.... all his fault, in a situation that would have otherwise been a happy dream sequence? and then to have him apologize for his fucking trauma, only for him to beg for death at the end and get swallowed up by the universe? for the flashpoint plot irt apokolips war that shouldn’t have been john’s doing in the first place????
like i get it, john constantine is a tragic character, john has canon mental illness, and hellblazer content is supposed to fall into the horror genre. i get it! but this... isn’t how you do it. we need to be careful about ableism in horror. you don’t have a mentally ill character be blamed for their suffering.

it’s truly infuriating how dc has handled john’s bisexuality. if it’s not straight up biphobic gags, it’s a complete emasculation of him to the point of him being out of character because of the ignorant idea that in a mlm relationship, one of them has to be the “girl.” i also blame the legends show for flanderizing john’s character into a tumblr fanfic-y mlm.
if it’s not the biphobia in that terrible city of demons movie, or the out of character bashful, shameful john in that king shark scene that has done irreversible damage, or that lucifer comic where john not only sleeps with him ( a choice i strongly feel john would not make ) but kicks his leg up during a kiss like some middle school tween???? or the urban legends comic where john is an obsessively annoying flirt to the point of being a kiss ass to batman of all people... i am just so annoyed. and im going to blame everyone that went around calling john a twink because the gay terminology has been lost, apparently.
he is a whole grown ass middle aged man. he has been through so much, and is a cynical grump. he is not being the quirky little gay wizard you fanon him to be. he is fulfilling his toxic masculinity bingo card and fucking men and getting into fights and ghosting people. enough,, enough!!!
dc will pay for their crimes of making a gag of john’s bisexuality while also not giving him as much dc pride content as they’ve miked him for in other mediums.

john is only an anti-hero in dc comics because his morals unsurprisingly get dimmed in contrast to literal superheroes who operate on exaggerated virtues that just don’t work in real life, and for some reason, everyone keeps comparing him to a villain because of that.
he is literally the most realistic depiction of a hero among the average human because he is among them, he is them.
i should not have to keep seeing people refer to him as some villain because he’s not recklessly self-sacrificing for the aesthetic of it.

the tragedy of john constantine is that every comic character believes that he is a terrible person because he goes out of his way to make everyone believe that, and also that people irl also believe he is a terrible person because they have no media literacy and at this point i am begging for some alternative to the “anti-hero” label because no one knows how to behave

Everything is inverted. When I say I love you I mean I hope you don’t die today. I don’t say it to myself nearly enough because I no longer believe in words. I believe in their power but not their truth.

people be like “yeah john constantine saves the world but he complains about having to do it so he’s not a real hero” and it’s like, why do you think he complains about having to save the world?
because he’s a hippie and a punk that wanted so much more for it, that believed - at one point - that they could get there. he doesn’t want to save the world because he doesn’t want the world to have to be saved! he wants it to just be okay for a while, but it just all goes to hell again after he helps and he’s tired, okay? especially since he never gets to just be tired without someone no sooner guilting him into accepting another job of holding everyone else’s problems together. so yeah, he’s gonna complain, because no one lets him catch a break.
but if he truly believed there was no hope for the world, he wouldn’t try to save it in the first place.

what’s interesting about john constantine is that his character is defined by how heroism broke him. how his origin story starts with him trying to be a hero and failing, and how that trauma shapes him in ways that are beyond repair.
and how he is punished for it.
