According to early estimates, the movie has collected in the range of Rs. 16.25 to 17.25 crores. This takes the 10-day total collection to Rs. 209-210 crores, thereby emerging the much-needed hit film for Hindi Film Industry.
Brahmastra – Part One: Shiva
The film has continued to do phenomenal business in the Top 10 cities of India, and to everyone’s surprise, even the mass belt have come on board the film in the second weekend. The movie has collected in excess of Rs. 40 crores in its second weekend across India, which indicates a strong trend at the box office. Brahmastra is faring like a Hollywood film and hence, the business will see a dip on weekdays again. There is appreciation from a particular section of the audience, which is translating into footfalls at the ticket window. The business will escalate again in the third weekend and this trend is keeping the film in the race to enter the Rs. 250 crore club at the box office. Brahmastra’s business has come across as a pleasant surprise and ended the dry spell at the box office. Brahmastra has also infused some confidence in the producers of upcoming films like Vikram Vedha, Thank God, and Ram Setu. With this, we can say that audiences are back in the cinema halls.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ Wins Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award Variety
Tumblr media
By Rebecca RubinFilm and Media ReporterSteven Spielberg’s autobiographical coming-of-age story “The Fabelmans” took home the Toronto International Film Festival’s people’s choice award, providing a major boost to its awards season chances. TIFF’s people’s choice award is one of the most reliable predictors of eventual Oscar success. In past years, winners such as “Green Book” and “Nomadland” went on to capture the best picture prize at the Academy Awards. Other recent recipients, including “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “La La Land” and “Jojo Rabbit,” were best picture nominees and major forces during awards season. Since the people’s choice category was created in 1978, seven recipients went on to win best picture at the Oscars — five of which were in the past 20 years. “As I said on stage the other night, ‘Above all, I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto!’ This is the most personal film I’ve ever made, and  the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF so intimate and personal for me and my entire Fabelman family,” Spielberg said in a statement. “Thank you to Cameron Bailey and the incredible staff at TIFF; thank you to Universal Pictures; and a very special thank you to all the movie fans in Toronto who have made this past weekend one I’ll never forget.” “The Fabelmans,” which stars Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen and Gabriel LaBelle as Sam Fabelman, Spielberg’s screen surrogate, was enthusiastically embraced at its world premiere, where the film earned a roaring standing ovation. In Variety’s review, chief film critic Peter Debruge praised “The Fabelmans,” writing “the master of escapist entertainment gets personal in this 150-minute self-portrait, crafting a loving homage to the complicated relationship with his parents that has informed so much of his work.” At this year’s festival, the first runner-up for the audience award was Sarah Polley’s drama “Women Talking,” while the second-runner up was Rian Johnson’s whodunnit “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” The audience prize for the festival’s Midnight Madness series went to “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” and the documentary award went to “Black Ice.” All films in TIFF’s official selection are eligible for the people’s choice award, which is voted on by the viewing public. After two years of virtual premieres or limited capacity screenings, the Toronto Film Festival — running from Sept. 8 through the 18 — returned in force. The 47th annual gathering of cinema lovers concluded on Saturday evening with Mary Harron’s “Daliland,” a biopic about the late surrealist artist Salvador Dali. Other high-profile films that premiered at TIFF include Viola Davis and director Gina Prince-Bythewoo
n were eligible for the Amplify Voices Awards. The Changemaker award went to “Something You Said Last Night,” a drama about an Italian Canadianfamily on a summer vacation by Luis De Filippis. “Created with queer and trans creators in front and behind the camera, ‘Something You Said Last Night’ finds its power in the complex, imperfect truth of humans and our relationships with family,” TIFF’s Next Wave Committee, which votes on the Changemaker Award, said in a statement. “With her film, Luis De Filippis is changing the game — giving a voice to trans people along the way, and creating a future where queer representation exists beyond the one-dimensional stories and characters we’ve seen over and over again. We hope the visibility and recognition of this award will help more young people see and be inspired by the film like we were, and support De Filippis in her development and journey as a filmmaker.” Also at this year’s festival, director Anthony Shim’s “Riceboy Sleeps” took home the Platform Prize, which is a “competitive programme championing bold directorial visions.” “The 2022 TIFF Platform Jury announces the unanimous choice for the Platform Prize — ‘Riceboy Sleeps,’ written and directed by Anthony Shim for its deeply moving story and precisely-observed characters as they navigate racism, dislocation, family, and love. It balances social realism with pure poetry,” the Platform jury said in a statement. “Plus, it’s very funny.”

d’s historical epic “The Woman King,” the Harry Styles-led romantic drama “My Policeman” and Billy Eichner’s romantic comedy “Bros.” “2022 brought an exceptional selection of films that excited festival audiences around the world,” said TIFF’s executive director Cameron Bailey. “Our lineup showcased beloved auteurs alongside fresh voices in filmmaking, including numerous women powerhouses. TIFF welcomed guests, press, industry, international stars, and directors back to the city and into cinemas. The sweeping range in cinematic storytelling from around the world is a testament to the uniqueness of the films that are being made. We’re so grateful and proud of this year’s festival.” Though the people’s choice award may be the most high-profile honor, it’s not the only one handed out to movies that premiered at TIFF. The Amplify Voices Awards for best Canadian feature film, which recognizes underrepresented filmmakers, was given to “To Kill A Tiger,” a documentary from filmmaker Nisha Pahuja. Two other films, Martika Ramirez Escobar’s “Leonor Will Never Die” and Vinay Shukla’s “While We Watched,” were also honored in the category. Lively confirmed her pregnancy on Instagram after hinting at it during the 10th Annual Forbes Power Women's Summit.Congrats are in order for Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, who are expecting their fourth child together!Lively coyly teased the news at the 10th Annual Forbes Power Women's Summit Thursday in New York City as she walked the red carpet in a glitzy sequined dress. During a panel, Lively said, “ I just like to create. Whether that's baking or storytelling or businesses or humans, I just really like creating."For a couple days, neither Reynolds nor Lively’s reps have confirmed the news — but what else could fans expect from a couple that loves to joke and tease each other online? Luckily, for those who weren’t sure whether or not this was some sort of joke or promotional tool got confirmation from Lively herself via Instagram on Saturday, where she also called out paparazzi hanging out trying to get a photo of a pregnant Lively. “Here are photos of me pregnant in real life so the 11 guys waiting outside my home for a 🦄 sighting will leave me alone. You freak me and my kids out.”Lively went on to continue those who have given her family space and offered their congratulations in a less predatory manner: “Thanks to everyone else for all the love and respect and for continuing to unfollow accounts and publications who share photos of children. You have all the power against them. And thank you to the media who have a “No Kids Policy”. You all make all the difference 🙏♥️. Much love! Xxb”Lively and Reynolds share three daughters — James (7), Inez (5), and Betty (2), and the couple has gushed about how wonderful their three girls have made their lives. Back in May, the Shallows star opened up to Forbes about how becoming a mother has put her “at ease” with herself. "Once I had children, that just became even more profound because my time was even more precious," she said. "But also I think having children for me made me feel so much more in my skin. I never felt more myself or at ease in my own body or more confident—not to say that there aren't a bevy of insecurities coming at me a million times a day, but I just feel incredibly settled."During the pandemic, Reynolds revealed that the girls lived for hot pink dresses, adding that he wants to let the girls embrace their own interests without reinforcing gender stereotypes.“I try not to push gender-normative ideas on my kids as they’re born, but each one when they came out that shoot, they wanted to make dresses, they wanted to dress in hot pink all day. So, that’s what I do. This morning I made dresses out of tissue paper, which was fun for them. Not bad at all.”Aside from being two very cool parents, Reynolds and Lively seem to be a very cool (and very goofy) couple. The two rib each other on social media constantly, but Reynolds clearly has nothing but respect and love for his wife. During an episode of David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Reynolds explained how Lively “runs the show” when it comes to their kids. But, in true prankster form, Reynolds joked that after becoming a father he would use his wife as a “human shield” to defend their kids. “I used to say to her, ‘I would take a bullet for you,'” Reynolds told Letterman. “I could never love anything as much as I love you.”“The second I looked in that baby’s eyes, I knew in that exact moment that if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby,” Reynolds admitted.Congrats again to the growing family! And here’s hoping that whole “human shield” scenario doesn’t actually happen.<br><a href='https://www.scarymommy.com/entertainment/blake-lively-ryan-reynolds-pregnant-baby-no-4-calls-out-paparazzi'>CNN-News18</a><br><a href='https://www.scarymommy.com/entertainment/blake-lively-ryan-reynolds-pregnant-baby-no-4-calls-out-paparazzi'>Blake Lively Confirmed She's Pregnant — And Called Out Creepy Paparazzi Scary Mommy</a>

Kate Winslet Taken to Hospital After Fall While Filming in Croatia Hollywood Reporter
Tumblr media
Kate Winslet is ready to get back to work after a hospital visit following a mishap while filming an upcoming project in Croatia. The actress was shooting her titular role in the historical drama film Lee when an on-set accident led to her being taken to a nearby hospital to ensure that she was OK, her reps confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. Winslet will resume filming this week as scheduled. “Kate slipped and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure required by the production,” her team said. “She is fine and will be filming, as planned, this week.” The 46-year-old Oscar winner will portray photographer Lee Miller in the film that focuses on her life, including her work as a war correspondent for Vogue during World War II. The cast for director Ellen Kuras’ movie includes Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Andrea Riseborough and Josh O’Connor. Winslet, who has a role in the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water, was most recently seen on the small screen with HBO’s Mare of Easttown, which earned her an Emmy Award last year. Recent film credits include Ammonite, Blackbird and The Mountain Between Us. During a 2017 interview with THR’s Awards Chatter podcast, the seven-time Oscar nominee said that the joy she feels while acting has not diminished over the years: “I love it more than ever, and I will still love it when I’m 75.” She had previously told THR that she never had a back-up career path in mind, explaining, “I don’t have a massive business brain; I’m sensible, but I don’t have a business brain. And I’m not one for offices and wearing high heels to work every day — forget it. It was all about acting, always, it really was.”

Knives Out, Weird Al, and more: eight great movies from TIFF 2022 The Verge
Tumblr media
By Andrew WebsterGoing to an event like the Toronto International Film Festival is an overwhelming experience — even if you’re a veteran festival-goer. There are just so many movies spread out across so many days and theaters that it’s hard to avoid feeling like you’re missing out on something. At the same time, it can be incredibly refreshing. As regular movie theaters continue to be dominated by increasingly small lineups of blockbusters and never-ending franchises, the breadth of films showing at TIFF is a good reminder of why movies are so great. This mix of overwhelmed yet refreshed is exactly how I felt after spending the last week at the 2022 iteration of TIFF. I didn’t get to see everything I hoped. In particular, I couldn’t squeeze Park Chan-wook’s new film Decision to Leave into my schedule, and my ticket for the now-controversial The People’s Joker was canceled — but I still managed to screen a huge range of different types of movies, from extremely goofy biopics and sweet stories about kidnapping to some beautiful stop-motion animation. With the caveat that I couldn’t watch everything there, here are my favorite movies I saw at the festival. If you’ve seen past work from director Hirokazu Kore-eda, like his award-winning Shoplifters, then his latest film, Broker, will feel familiar in a lot of ways. Broker once again sees the director exploring people at the margins of society finding morally
Wild will be enough to get them to watch. After all, it’s a return to stop-motion animation that director Henry Selick co-wrote alongside Nope director Jordan Peele and the first film from Selick since 2009’s Coraline. Peele also stars in the film alongside his longtime comedic companion Keegan-Michael Key. On paper, it’s the perfect Halloween movie. Luckily, it’s also great on-screen. Combining some of the best stop-motion animation I’ve ever seen — seriously, the level of detail is incredible, from rumbling radiators to bubbling pots of curry — with a silly, scary, and heartfelt story about a young girl with literal demons who’s fighting to find her place in the world while also saving an entire town. It’s a typical Selick coming-of-age story but also one with a side critique of the prison industrial complex. Wendell & Wild starts streaming on Netflix on October 28th. / Sign up for Verge Deals to get deals on products we've tested sent to your inbox daily.

questionable ways to survive. In this case, two men have a side business selling orphan babies to rich couples looking to adopt. It’s extremely messed up: particularly when one of the moms comes back to check on her kid.She ends up joining them on a sales road trip across Korea, and from there, Broker steadily turns into a surprisingly sweet story about found families and the horrors of navigating bureaucratic systems. For every dark moment — like seeing a couple haggle over the price of a baby or an actual murder — there are tender scenes of people just trying to make the best of what they have. Think of it like a crime drama crossed with Little Miss Sunshine. Broker also has a great cast, including Parasite star Song Kang-Ho as one of the brokers and Sense8’s Doona Bae as a police officer trying to catch them in the act.Broker is coming to theaters on December 26th.Netflix spent an eye-watering amount of money for the sequels to Knives Out and, if the first one is any indication, the investment might have been worth it. Glass Onion sees the return of both director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig as the charming detective Benoit Blanc as they tackle a new mystery. This time, it’s a murder on the private island of a tech billionaire, who just so happens to
turbingly true-to-life scenes of decomposing and butchered animals. And the story touches on a number of big subjects, from our relationship with the land that sustains us to the uncomfortable divide between colonizers and those they’ve colonized. What’s also quite striking about Godland, though, is the way it’s shot. Director Hlynur Pálmason really leans into the photographic inspiration, with square frames and close-up shots of the cast that often look like portraits. At times, it really feels like you’re looking through the lens of the priest’s camera. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s not clear yet when Godland will receive a wider release. Amazon’s Good Night Oppy is a documentary following the unexpectedly long lifespans of the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. For the most part, it has exactly what you’d expect from this kind of film. There are lots of great interviews with former engineers and scientists who worked on the project, coupled with archival footage to show what things were like in the moment. What makes it unique, though, is the visual effects. Star Wars visual effects house ILM worked on the movie, creating incredibly detailed and realistic CG scenes that bring these rovers and the Martian landscape to life. There are planet-wide sandstorms that look like something out of Mad Max and lots of close-ups of the robots that make them look and move like Star Wars droids. It adds a new dimension to a familiar story. Good Night Oppy starts streaming on Prime Video on November 23rd. Hunt marks the directorial debut of Lee Jung-jae, a longtime Korean star who came to global prominence through Netflix’s Squid Game. It’s a spy thriller set in the 1980s following a failed attempt at assassinating the South Korean president. In the aftermath, two KCIA chiefs — one of whom is played by Lee himself — are racing to find the suspect amid rising tensions with North Korea. Spy thrillers are always full of deception. That’s kind of the point. But Hunt takes things to an extreme degree, with a dizzying array of twists and turns that makes it nearly impossible to know who is on which side and who you can trust. (Hint: you probably can’t trust anyone.) It’s unrelenting, rarely giving you a second to breathe before it throws yet another new wrench into the proceedings. Things end on a somewhat strange note, but the ride is a lot of fun. Hunt doesn’t yet have a theatrical release date. Pearl is the second entry of Ti West’s burgeoning horror franchise, but it’s also primarily a prequel to X, which released earlier this year. It’s an origin story, with Mia Goth reprising her role as the titular Pearl as she shifts from unassuming farm girl to bloodthirsty monster. If you’ve seen X, there aren’t a lot of surprises here, but Pearl still works because of the incredible performance from Goth, who is genuinely terrifying, as well as the stylistic mix of The Wizard of Oz, Psycho, and a straight-up slasher. For more on Pearl, be sure to check out my full review. Pearl is coming to theaters on September 16th. Most biopics are meant to help viewers understand a person’s life. When it comes to musical biopics, this usually means following a traditional arc from a child to a superstar, with all the ups and downs in between. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story does all of this but with one important difference: almost nothing you see in the movie is actually true. Instead, Weird is a parody of biopics (fitting for the master of musical parodies) that’s more like Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story than Rocketman — and it’s absolutely hilarious. It takes Yankovic’s life story in absurd directions, from drug-fueled trips through hell to a battle with a real-life drug lord. Daniel Radcliffe commits to the titular role completely, adding a level of intensity that makes the jokes hit that much harder. For more on Weird, you can check out my full review. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is coming to the Roku Channel on November 4th. For some people, the names involved with Wendell &
be hosting a retreat for his closest friends, which include everyone from an MRA YouTube star to a state governor.Craig is clearly having a lot of fun doubling down on his southern caricature persona here, but Glass Onion is also notable for how great the rest of the cast is: Edward Norton as a douchebag tech bro with more money than sense; Janelle Monáe as his spurned former partner; Kathryn Hahn as a politician with questionable morals; Kate Hudson as an impossibly clueless fashion designer; and — perhaps the best of all — Dave Bautista as a man so insecure he swims with his pistol. If Glass Onion were just 90 minutes of this group having fun on an island, I’d be into it, but it’s also a very intriguing mystery. For more on Glass Onion, make sure to check out my full review.Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery starts streaming on Netflix on December 23rd but will be in select theaters at some point before then.Godland is based on true events but in a unique way. The filmmakers used a series of found photographs from the 1800s as an inspiration for this quiet, contemplative story about a Danish priest traveling across Iceland to set up a church in a remote village before winter. It’s full of sweeping shots of the incredible Icelandic landscape, from freezing waterfalls to rushing lava, along with dis

Filed under:Just yesterday, Triple H officially announced that Logan Paul, Internet celebrity and social media star, would be challenging Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal championship at the upcoming Crown Jewel event on Nov. 5, 2022, in Saudi Arabia. This came together in the blink of an eye, with Reigns appearing on the IMPAULSIVE podcast, Paul making a comment about a match after he left, and an appearance on Friday Night SmackDown and a press conference later it was on.Paul, as it turns out, may not be making the long trip alone. His brother, the equally infamous Jake Paul, is now saying he may be coming too:Logan is the definition of anything is possible. 2 matches in WWE and he’s challenging for the belt. 'Phantom of the Opera' sales explode after shock closing announcement New York Post
Tumblr media
Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission. To quote Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita,” “and the money kept rolling in!”After The Post first reported on Friday that the composer’s “The Phantom of the Opera” would close on Broadway this winter after 35 years, the show took in $2 million in ticket sales by 8 p.m., producer Cameron Mackintosh told The Post.“The tills are alive with the sound of the music of the night!,” Mackintosh said on a phone call from London. The producer is pleased the box office boom and outpouring of affection from fans around the world, even though The Post scuttled his announcement plans (the news was set to drop next week.) Still, “Phantom” is definitely coming to an end in New York on Feb. 18, shortly after a lavish bash for its 35th anniversary.“Everyone thinks these shows can go on forever, but you can’t run a big show at these margins anymore,” the producer said, adding that the pre-pandemic running cost of “Phantom,” $800,000, has ballooned to $950,000 today. And that increase arrives during an extremely challenging time for Broadway.“The 35-year run is even more miraculous when you consider how huge it is,” Mackintosh said.“There comes a tipping point in the life of any show,” he added. “The number of losing weeks was rising even before COVID.”This might not be the last you see of the Phantom and Christine Daae. The musical could eventually return to Broadway in a different form, the producer said.“I’m sure ‘Phantom’ will come back at some point,” he said. “After I took ‘Les Miz’ off, it came back twice!”At more than 13,000 performances since “Phantom” opened on Jan. 26, 1988 at the Majestic Theatre, its home to this very day, it’s the longest running show on Broadway. Next in line is “Chicago,” which Mackintosh noted, is much cheaper to run.Despite “Phantom,” an iconic Broadway musical, ending its storied run in February, the British producer feels confident in a prosperous future for Broadway and the West End. Eventually.“The encouraging thing is that there is still a terrific resilience and an insistence to come to shows,” said Mackintosh, whose shows in London include “Phantom” (it’s doing well there, he said), “Hamilton,” “Les Miserables” and “Mary Poppins.” “It’s going to be a bumpy ride, but people are turning up!”<br><a href='https://nypost.com/2022/09/18/phantom-of-the-opera-sales-explode-after-shock-closing-announcement/'>CNN-News18</a><br><a href='https://nypost.com/2022/09/18/phantom-of-the-opera-sales-explode-after-shock-closing-announcement/'>'Phantom of the Opera' sales explode after shock closing announcement New York Post</a>

Wordle today: Here's the answer, hints for September 19 Mashable
Tumblr media
New week, new day, new Wordle! Whether you're smashing it or struggling, we're here to help every day.If you just want the answer, you can jump straight to the end of this article for September 19's Wordle solution. If you'd rather work through it yourself, keep reading for some tips, tricks, and clues.Wordle was initially created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, though it quickly spread until it became an international phenomenon. Thousands of players across the globe tackle Wordle each day, with some fans even having created alternate versions of the daily word puzzle game. These include battle royale format Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once. The popularity of Wordle even reached such heights that the New York Times bought it earlier this year, while TikTok creators live-stream themselves playing it.The goal of Wordle is to have fun, and there's no right way to have fun. Just choose whatever starting word feels right to you, and don't let anyone shame you for it. However, if you want to take a more strategic approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that will spark joy. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.The entire archive of past Wordles used to be available for anyone to play in glorious days gone by. Unfortunately it has since been taken down, with the website's creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times. If you're finding Wordle too easy, you can try enabling its Hard Mode to give your brain a tougher challenge. But Wordle isn't getting any harder by itself — it's the same difficulty that it's always been. Wordle law dictates that only one puzzle solution should exist per day. This law comes with exceptions though, as Wordle will occasionally accept two different solutions as correct. This is because the New York Times made changes to the Wordle word list after acquiring it, and sometimes swaps out words from the original list. To ensure you're getting the right answer every day, refresh your browser before you play — the site will save your streak. It's an old-fashioned word, and relates to a period of time. Not today! The letter T!Get your guesses in — it's the last call before we reveal the answer to today's Wordle! Are you ready? The solution to Wordle #457 is...TRICE.Don't know the meaning of TRICE? It's on the obscure side, but you've probably heard it before. It's an informal word for a very short period of time — "in a trice" is like saying "in a flash" or "in a single moment".<br><a href='https://mashable.com/article/wordle-today-answer-september-19'>CNN-News18</a><br><a href='https://mashable.com/article/wordle-today-answer-september-19'>Wordle today: Here's the answer, hints for September 19 Mashable</a>

Weekly Horoscopes for the Week of September 19 by the Cut The Cut
Tumblr media
On Thursday night, the sun enters charming, sociable, nonjudgmental Libra. Libra season is one of the best times of the year for enjoying the company of the people around you. It’s easier now to stop wishing friends or partners were different and appreciate them for who they are. And, just as importantly, you’ll find they extend the same generosity to you. You can use this time to settle problems and build bridges or be less serious: chat, flirt, have fun. Make the most of it. On Friday morning, Mercury (still retrograde for one more week) moves backward into Virgo. Your thinking becomes more precise and analytical, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to communicate it clearly. Expect misunderstandings to occur, and know that it’s not the end of the world when they do. Others might not immediately understand your vision or appreciate your insights. Give it a little time, though, and they will.Normally you go your own way, no matter what. You’re an independent thinker, unconcerned with anyone else’s opinion. This week, though, it’s important that you listen to the people who care about you when they offer up some criticism. (The ones who don’t, you can continue to ignore.) Not because they’re wiser than you or their judgment is necessarily sounder. It’s simply that looking at the world from a different angle means they see things that are invisible to you. You don’t have to heed their advice — t

he final decision is yours — but you’ll be glad to have heard what they have to say. This week, anxiety may leave you feeling pressured to make big decisions before you’re ready. You worry that if you don’t make your move this instant, you’ll miss out forever, that if you turn down an opportunity (even a bad one), you’ll never be offered another. Right now, though, acting rashly will likely turn out worse than not acting at all. If you’re ready to move forward, then do; but if you’re having doubts, listen to them. This won’t be the last time something wonderful presents itself. Don’t let anyone (including yourself) persuade you otherwise. The earth keeps spinning; eventually new opportunities will arise.Yours is a mind that’s constantly at work, coming up with plans and contemplating ideas and spinning stories. It’s a wonderful trait. It’s what makes you creative and curious and fun. But sometimes it also causes you to get in your own way, to overthink things and fixate on your flaws and past mistakes. This week, that negative part of your brain might be especially active, so your job is to refuse to let it win. Your intellect may try to convince you that you’re a mess-up, undeserving of kindness or understanding, but it’s wrong: You’re still worthy of love. You take responsibility for your
you didn’t have big dreams, you could stop working so hard. If you no longer believed you were capable of changing the world (or even your own future), then you could finally relax. This week, you might be tempted to give up, but that’s unlikely to make you happy in the end. Your aspirations are important, and ultimately they make your life fulfilling. You don’t need to relinquish them entirely; you might just need a rest. So take a break and then keep going. It’s easy to be fooled by swagger. When others are especially assertive, speaking authoritatively or throwing their body around like they’re the most important person in the room, you assume that they are. You may be convinced, in spite of yourself, that they know what they’re talking about, maybe even more than you do. So this week it’s crucial that you remember you’re allowed to be skeptical. Others may behave like they own the whole world, but you don’t have to accept it. Anyone can act that way. Your wisdom and ideas and experience are every bit as valuable. It’s possible to live to the fullest, to make only smart choices, and end up with regrets all the same. When you imagine the other directions you could have taken — experiences you could have had, people you could have loved, braver or more successful versions of yourself you might have become — how could you not feel a little wistful? This week, you might experience fresh grief over the roads you didn’t get to travel. The important thing is that you don’t read too much into it. Your life might not be perfect, but whose is? That doesn’t mean you chose wrong. In certain situations, you’re hyperaware that other people’s perceptions of you have important material consequences for your life: They can determine which opportunities you’re given and which you miss out on, which circles welcome you and which are closed to you. But this week, you might need to remind yourself that there are many times when their opinions change nothing. Whether or not they like you makes no difference to your well-being. So as much as you can, try not to worry. If you focus on playing to the crowd, on pleasing others, you’ll get turned around and forget what you want. Your inner compass is trustworthy. Use it. You like to think that you shine brightest under pressure. The more challenging the scenario, the more your powers are activated; the more urgent the problem, the faster you rise to meet it. Maybe it’s true. But it’s also possible that you’ve never had an opportunity to work in any other way, because you’ve always been operating under extreme amounts of stress. This week, make a point of being gentle with yourself, of taking every opening that may make your life easier. Surprising, beautiful emotions or ideas that never had a chance to thrive before can finally come alive. No matter how fun or brilliant or cool you are, there are times when coworkers or acquaintances, even your friends, take you for granted. And while it hardly feels great, you try not to let it bother you too much; you have better things to do than try to change their minds. This week, though, consider that maybe it is worth making an effort to intrigue or charm or surprise — not because you really care what other people think of you, but because by showing them that you’re wonderful and worthy of attention, you’re reminding yourself, too. When life is frustrating or confusing, that can indicate you’ve taken a wrong turn, that you aren’t where you need to be and it’s time to make a change. But this week, it’s important for you to remember that the opposite can also be true: Difficulty can be a sign of growth, that you’re in the process of finding your way. The challenges you’re facing now will lead you somewhere amazing, so don’t despair. You’re on the right track. actions; when you make a mistake or accidentally hurt someone, you try your hardest to make things right. It can be difficult, but it’s important to you. This week, though, it might seem like people are blaming you for things that aren’t your fault. And in these situations — when others approach you in bad faith, or take their displaced anger out on you — remember that you don’t have to apologize if you have nothing to be sorry for. You aren’t responsible for their emotions (though you occasionally convince yourself otherwise). You’re a good person and you’re doing your best; don’t let anyone else distract you from that.Strange as it seems, one of the best things you can do right now is take everyone around you a little less seriously. This doesn’t mean you should disregard their feelings, or treat them like they’re any less important; rather, it is simply about recognizing that we all say things we don’t really mean from time to time. This week in particular, your friends might speak harshly or carelessly when they’re blowing off steam. They might express themselves clumsily as they work through new ideas out loud. People are messy. Practice a little extra patience and they’ll do the same.Sometimes you imagine how much easier it would be if you let go of your ambitions. If

Before her heart stops, Elisa finds a way to stay close to her: a gift for every birthday up to her adult age, 18 gifts to try to accompany her child's growth year after year.Film critic PETER (Groucho Reviews) CANAVESE reviews the #Netflix Italian drama 18 PRESENTS on CELLULOID DREAMS THE MOVIE SHOW (5-11-20) SCREEN SCENE (with program host TIM SIKA). Produced by LARRY JAKUBECZ for #KSJS (90.5 FM) and #RadioSausalito (1610 AM).Italian Netflix movie 18 Presents (18 Regali) is a real hankie-loader, the perfect thing to watch if you’re over-hydrated and under-swollen. It’s about a pregnant woman who learns she has terminal cancer, and maps out gifts for her unborn daughter’s first 18 birthdays. Here’s the kicker: it’s based on a true story, and the baby girl’s father is credited as one of the film’s screenwriters. So the burning question is, will you need 100 tissues while watching it, or 200?The Gist: It’s 2001. Elisa (Vittoria Puccini) gets the crushing diagnosis. Cut to a few months later, in the hospital nursery. A somber Alessio (Edoardo Leo) plucks baby Anna from the bassinet. It’s just the two of them now. We see home videos featuring birthday cake and pinatas; Anna gets a toy kitchen, a new bike, some diving lessons, a piano she thinks sucks. Soon, she’s on the cusp of 18 (Benedetta Porcaroli), sullen and moody with a mouthy, rebellious streak.Anna and her dad squabble. She runs off and ends up getting tagged by a car. The driver is — hold onto yer hankies — Elisa! It’s 2001 again, the exact day of her diagnosis. The hospital is not where they go, since Anna’s OK, but rather, back to Elisa and Alessio’s house, the same house where Anna grew up. She starts putting two and two together to get eleventy-nine, because she apparently traveled through time and is now in the presence of her intrauterine self.Somehow, Anna doesn’t hyperventilate or check herself into the nearest asylum. No, she goes upstairs, sticks her face in her mom’s robe and inhales deeply, as people in movies always do. She somehow manages to move in with her parents, who don’t know they’re her parents, because why would they? She just concocts a sob stor
g trip in terms of time.” — Alessio trying to explain death to an eight-year-old Sex and Skin: None. Our Take: Happy Belated Mother’s Day, Mom — I got you a crateful of Kleenex! Despite the fact that it’s a true-blue dyed-in-the-wool grandmommy of a weeper, 18 Presents isn’t overly manipulative. It treats its characters respectfully, doesn’t deviate into cartoonish comedy and unravels the core mystery with surprising conviction. It’s not as predictable as it seems at first glance, save for the inevitable sobbing. There are two types of people in this world: Those that get mad when a movie makes them cry, and those who just give in to the moment and soak the couch and drive the cats out of the room. Problem is, the movie tends to dramatically loiter during an extra-draggy second act. Structurally, it’s pretty inventive for this type of movie, with its twisty, fractured narrative and occasional surreal flourish. But it doesn’t really stick the landing; these characters just don’t have any profound examinations of self and reality in them. It’s as if the movie exists solely to squeeze the living shit out of our tear ducts, wringing every last dribble of liquid from them with a steady, ruthless hand. Our Call: SKIP IT, although 18 Presents has me on the fence. It’s better than most shameless tearjerkers, but isn’t quite ambitious enough to transcend the banalities of its genre. y and they buy it. Elisa and Alessio work through the complications of her illness; she starts making a list of all the gifts she wants to give her daughter; and Anna just kind of hangs around for months, helping out here and there. Elisa experiences maternal stirrings around Anna, and she might not think about or wonder why, but we know why, and that’s what you call classic dramatic irony, folks. Will Anna inspire her mother to name the baby Anna, putting a mighty deep gash in the fabric of space and time? Will Anna come face-to-face with herself? Will a mystical genie show up to explain everything? No spoilers, but this time loop has gotta give eventually. What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: 18 Presents features the type of wot-the-heck supernaturalism of stuff like The Lake House — or, I dunno, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? — crossed with a disease-of-the-week TV movie calculated to make you heave snot across the room as you blubber and wail.Performance Worth Watching: Hats off to Puccini — who stars in Netflix series The Trial — for showing a reasonably complex range of emotions, which keeps the movie from getting too maudlin or sentimental.Memorable Dialogue: “Your mom went on a long trip…not a long trip in terms of distance, but a lon

And lots of guns. It seems that the entire department is out to stop the witness from getting to trial alive and Willis, a detective shuffling through his job with equal parts apathy and inebriation, is a convenient patsy in a conspiracy of fatal witness tampering. David Morse pulls the strings as Willis’s former partner, a coolly duplicitous cop with a Mephistophelian air. It’s hardly a new story and the script doesn’t add much to the redemptive drama as our cop is roused from his moral coma and takes on what appears to the entire police force to get his man to the court alive by his 118-minute deadline. The lean plotting, however, discards the cute twists and physics-defying superhuman feats that pepper so many American crime spectacles (including the wise-ass Die Hard movies that made Willis an action star) for a more down to Earth drama. The real-time countdown provides tension and momentum and the physical repercussions of each violent collision gives is a semblance of credibility. It’s a satisfying piece of genre filmmaking and an underrated American crime story thanks to the low-key turn by Willis and the street level heroics of his odyssey.Queue it up!Don’t miss a single recommendation. It also presents an annoyingly didactic message about violence, which it says is encouraged by the media for ratings. There is nothing subtle about this heavy-handed thriller. Its fast-paced street action scenes and the attention grabbing psychopathic villain (Karel Roden) challenging the self-absorbed celebrity ace homicide detective (De Niro), give it some entertainment value. It’s a film that has about 15 minutes of fervor to it before it gets grounded into a mixture of sleaze, violence, and heartless melodrama. Two vile Eastern European émigrés come to America believing it is the land of o
caped down the fire escape. Oleg, who thinks of himself as Frank Capra, got it all on video. First on the crime scene is the 55-year-old homicide detective, Eddie Flemming (Robert De Niro), who tells a popular tabloid TV program,”Top Story,” hosted by sleazy Robert Hawkins (Kelsey Grammer), a business friend of Eddie’s, about his arrests so he can get exclusive footage of it which enables his show to have top ratings. In return Eddie gets publicity which has made him into a celebrity, the toast of the grateful town. Eddie’s girlfriend is that program’s TV reporter (Melina Kanakaredes), and they mutually help their careers grow. The only good thing about this arrangement is that despite its unseemly nature Eddie is perceived as a dedicated and good cop, and the show does help in catching criminals. Second on the crime scene is a young fire marshal, Jordy Warsaw (Edward Burns), who is upset that the publicity hound homicide detective is stepping on what is supposed to be his crime scene. But they both conclude there was a double homicide committed before the fire started, and decide to exchange their takes on the case and work together. The eyewitness is an edgy hairdresser Daphne (Vera Farmiga), who is in this country illegally and therefore afraid to come forward. But Eddie and Jordy track her down to her workplace salon, where she works as a hair washer. Meanwhile Emil is also trying to locate her and finds in his victim’s wallet a card to an escort service, whereby he calls for a Czech prostitute to come over to his hotel. He beats the address out of where the unfortunate prostitute works before killing her and beats the detectives to the salon where he threatens the Czech witness not to squeal or else. The detectives come by and they spot the two thugs in the street and the best action sequence in the film takes place, as the detectives run through the crowded East Side NYC streets chasing the murderers who escape into Central Park. The next part of the film is its big surprise, it involves these two lunatics making a “snuff” film and selling it to Top Story for a million dollars. Emil figures out that he and Oleg should be captured in Planet Hollywood, with their sleazy attorney at their side (the real-life Mafia mouthpiece, Bruce Cutler). The mouthpiece will plead insanity for them and blame the crime on Emil’s abusive childhood and he will move to get Oleg sent to a mental institution, where he can then claim he’s sane and be released. Oleg’s insane plan is to then cash in on his celebrity for a movie deal knowing that he won’t be tried for the crime again because of double jeopardy. John Herzfeld (“2 Days in the Valley”), in his second feature, has used the media for his whipping boy to get out his overstated message about how slimy they are. Other than the action scenes, brilliantly filmed by Jean Yves Escoffier, the movie is unappealing. As for the actors: De Niro is playing a part he always does very well, showing off his comical gift for quirkiness and endowing his character with a larger than life presentation. Burns is his opposite, a bland personality who doesn’t watch TV or seek publicity. His performance succeeds only in being a bland one, intentional or not. The juiciest part is reserved for Roden, who makes the most out of being a scary figure, a sociopath with an unintentionally droll wit. Grammer plays a cardboard villain, who lives for the ratings which gives him fame and wealth. He could be any one of a number of tabloid TV slimy hosts, reminding me most of the ass-kissing and rating conscience Geraldo Rivera. There’s not much to this flick, except for the beautiful way its mayhem was filmed. Its cynical opinion of the media seemed hypocritical, since this film is just as exploitative and violent as the tabloid TV show it was railing against for the whole two hours. pportunity for everyone, including criminals. The morose Emil (Karel Roden) is a Czech, with the bulging eyes and simpering grin of a lunatic. His partner is a creepy, dim-witted Russian, Oleg (Oleg Taktarov), who is into taking pictures of everything he sees around him with his mini camera.Emil will at one point declare: “I love America! No one is responsible for what they do.” He gets his info about America, after watching a dumb American tabloid TV show (which is the way most foreigners unfortunately learn about America). Before they take care of their NYC business, Oleg impulsively steals an expensive camcorder off a Times Square store and immediately starts videotaping everything in his sight. The two then go to the apartment of Emil’s partner, who stashed the money for them to split while Emil spent time in prison for the crime in the old country. When he tells Emil he spent the money and can only offer him a job as a plumber, Emil picks up his partner’s kitchen knife and savagely stabs him to death and then chokes his wife to death. To conceal the crime, he puts their bodies together and douses them with gasoline and burns down the building. This con artist pops up in two new movies-more a con in the case of Harry Fabian (Robert De Niro), the ambulance-chasing lawyer in _B_Night and the City,_b_ and much more an artist in the person of Leon (Bernzy) Bernstein (Joe Pesci), the crime-chasing shutterbug hero of _B_The Public Eye._b_ The latter film, loosely inspired by Weegee, the great tabloid photographer, is set during World War II. Though "Night and the City," Irwin Winkler's remake of Jules Dassin's 1950 film noir, has been updated by writer Richard ("Clockers") Price, in spirit it belongs to an earlier era, when characters were "characters."Motor mouth Harry Fabian talks an up beat game, but his life operates by the rules of Murphy's Law (anything that can go wrong will go wrong). This time, however, he's sure he's going to strike gold-as a boxing promoter. There are some big problems with his scheme. His partner, ex-prizefighter Al Grossman (Jack Warden), is the brother of gangster Boom Boom Grossman (Alan King), and Harry's muscling in on Boom Boom's turf. And Harry's coconspirator and lover, Helen (Jessica Lange), is married to a violently jealous bar owner (Cliff Gorman). If things go wrong this time, he could be a dead man.Winkler, a successful producer ("Raging Bull," "Rocky") recently turned director ("Guilty by Suspicion"), has picked up some moves from Scorsese in his second, and much improved, effort. He gets the juices flowing with his nervous style, playing dread off gallows humor. He's got a lot to work with-the tangy, slangy bite of Price's underworld dialogue, and a cast that could milk tension from a bus schedule. De Niro is a sensationally manic-and even touching-sleaze; King, Warden and Gorman are splendidly disreputable, and Lange gives her role a tough/tender sexuality that's a pleasure to watch even when her character's loyalty to Harry confounds sense. "Night and the City" hits a false note at the finish. Forgive that and relish the movie's snappy, low-life high spirits. To properly enjoy Howard Franklin's "The Public Eye," it's best to forget about the real Weegee, who would have found this tribute hopelessly sentimental and its detective-movie plotting a crazy co
dience in a barrage of portentously pumped-up images and sounds: 15th-century Spain thunders by through billows of smoke, murk and noise. The music by Vangelis clangs and boings relentlessly; the sound of creaking sails on Columbus's voyage is as assaultive as the salvos of gunfire in the battle between Spaniards and rebelling Indians. Despite all the recent rethinking of Columbus and his discovery/invasion of the New World, "1492" is really a conventional Hollywood "biopic." Depardieu, a great movie star, seems all at sea in more ways than one. Hamstrung by Scott's overwrought style and Roselyne Bosch's underthought screenplay (and, frankly, his own barely adequate English), he hasn't a chance to develop his character. As Queen Isabel, Sigourney Weaver, immobile in her frozen fan of hair and iron-stiff brocade, looks like the Bride of Frankenstein after a course at finishing school. Some stunning images collide with dialogue like "No one ever expected this to be easy, Colon." This $50 million spectacle must be one of the least entertaining epic films ever made. ntrivance. Yet for all its Hollywood silliness, there's something haunting about the figure of Bernzy, the solitary, night-crawling photographer who lives only for his work, collecting $3 for every corpse he photographs, unblinkingly witnessing the worst the New York streets have to offer. This is a portrait of the artist as hermit/voyeur/obsessive, a man who can connect to life only through the lens of his camera. What lures him out of his emotional shell is, of course, a beautiful woman-Barbara Hershey's glamorous nightclub owner, a vamp who ensorcells the photographer into playing private eye in a plot involving mobsters, wartime black markets and government scandals. Using all this artifice to illuminate the gritty world of a lonely shutterbug is an odd choice. Yet the tale's mournful B-movie romanticism-and Pesci's introspective, crablike performance-gets under your skin. In its moody, daffy way, "The Public Eye" gives off an authentic reek of artistic compulsion.DAVID ANSENHere's a one-word review of "1492": hubris. That overweening pride belongs to director Ridley Scott ("Alien"), a visual wizard who outwizards himself. Scott doesn't so much ten the story of Columbus (Gerard Depardieu) as hurl it at the au

Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror.“The Kingdom” is a film that manages to completely miss one mark, while absolutely hitting it right in the center of another. This Peter Berg-directed film falls short in its attempt to be a ripped-from-the-headlines type drama, yet manages to salvage itself if you take it for what it is - a standard action flick that just happens to be set in an exotic location.“The Kingdom” begins with a terrorist attack on an American housing compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. At first the U.S. government is content with maintaining protocol and letting the Saudi Arabian government handle the investigation. That decision doesn’t sit well with FBI special agent Ronald Fleury (Jamie Foxx), so he negotiates a secret five-day trip to assist with the investigation.Once in Riyadh, Fleury and his team of investigators (Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) quickly discover that they are not wanted and their investigation is stifled by local protocol.Fleury’s crew eventually finds an ally, a Saudi colonel (Ashraf Barhoum), who is willing to help them catch the people responsible for the bombing.Foxx is pretty dynamic in the lead, showing his versatility as an actor. The rest of the cast is spotty: Cooper is underutilized, Garner is seemingly out of place and Jeremy Piven is unable to bring anything to his character, a U.S. diplomat who comes off as a caricature.Matthew Michael Carnahan’s screenplay tries to make a statement about current U.S./Middle Eastern relations, but the message feels preachy and doesn’t really offer a fresh point of view. It also doesn’t fit to Berg’s strengths as a director. What does fit Berg’s strength is his keen eye for action and “The Kingdom” has that down to a T. When the film hits its stride in the final third, with an extended chase sequence, “The Kingdom” really kicks it into another gear.“The Kingdom” isn’t quite up to the high standards set by the Bourne franchise, but it is still good enough to make it a film that action fans will appreciate.DVD dandy of the weekThis week’s dandy is “1408” (B-), the thriller based on the Stephen King short story that manages to entertain, despite a less than satisfying final act.John Cusack stars as Mike Enslin, a writer who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences. His latest target is room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel, a room in which numerous guests have mysteriously died within an hour of checking in.Enslin is convinced that the deaths are just coincidenc

e and the whole idea of the room being haunted is merely a myth, but his skepticism quickly fades after he enters 1408.“1408” is essentially staged like a one-act play, with Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson (as the hotel’s manager) as the main characters. Cusack is pretty effective as Enslin, capturing the character’s cynicism and eventual free-fall into madness. For the first three-quarters of the film, “1408” really zips along and is one of the more entertaining thrillers in recent memory. But the film really starts to fall apart in the final act, unsure how to conclude Enslin’s journey. The final result is less than satisfying, although it’s still not enough to totally dismiss “1408” as a complete misfire.“1408” is rated PG-13 for thematic material including disturbing sequences of violence and terror, frightening images and language and will be available Tuesday on DVD.Success! ocumentary treatment with this expose on the beloved TV icon. Fred Rogers left his mark on the world through his show, one that sought to bridge cultural, religious, and racial divides by teaching children the importance of kindness, acceptance, and compassion. He taught us all how to be better human beings, but the doc dives further, exploring the man behind the TV personality, a guy who fought Congress for funding for the arts and who left a legacy worth celebrating. Bring tissues for this one, folks. Run Time: 99 min | IMDb: 8/10 Warning: Netflix’s The Bleeding Edge will seriously piss you off. It might also make you swear off doctors for the rest of your life. The film is a deep dive into the medical device industry and the dangers that lurk there for unassuming patients. Like the pharmaceutical industry, there are few laws regulating the creation and implementation of medical devices — think everything from birth control to orthopedic instruments — and the doc shows how this is negatively affecting millions of Americans every year from the women unknowingly sterilized by an IUD device to a doctor whose own ortho-device slowly poisoned him. It’s a frustrating watch, but a necessary one. Directed by Chris Smith, the film shows Carrey, who was a celebrated comedic actor at the time, going method for his dramatic role as the brilliant on-stage comedian. There’s plenty of behind-the-scenes drama on this one, including Carrey’s backstage antics while shooting the movie, but what’s really interesting about the film is watching the actor’s thorough process and how he’s approached his colorful careers. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 114 min | IMDb: 7/10 We live in a world connected with most of our interactions happening online. It’s great but, as this doc shows, it’s also terrifying. Terrifying because the way our data changes hands so quickly and indiscriminately — as long as companies shell out the cash for it — skirts all kinds of privacy laws and moral boundaries. This doc, told from the perspective of a journalist attempting to get his search data, the enormous fight with big tech to do it, and how his journey connects to the Cambridge Analytica scandal that may have influenced multiple elections in the States and abroad, is full of fascinating information and shocking tell-alls that could bring this whole internet empire down if people finally decide to start listening. Run Time: 87 min | IMDb: 6.9/10 This political doc made its way from Sundance to Netflix and we couldn’t think of a better time to watch it than leading up to the 2020 election. It follows the grassroots campaign of the right’s favorite punching bag, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, showcasing her charisma and approachability while also diving into more intimate parts of her life, like her relationship with her late father. It’s a feel-good story from Capitol Hill and really, we need more of that. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 20 min | IMDb: N/A The loss of Chadwick Boseman last year shocked Hollywood — and the world — but Netflix pays tribute to the Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom actor with this short doc that takes a look at his incredible career, narrated by the people who knew and loved him best. There are plenty of famous faces littering this homage but it’s Boseman — his dedication to his craft, his desire to bring authentic Black experiences to the screen — that shines. Netflix Extremis (2016) Run Time: 24 min | IMDb: 7.3/10 Clocking in at 24 minutes, the Oscar-nominated Extremis really would only work as a short, as its subject matter is almost unbearably heavy. Following terminal patients, their families, and their doctors, the tearjerker zeros in on the decision that many people are forced to make: whether to end a life or keep struggling to hold on. Netflix’s first foray into short documentary, it’s raw insight that can be rough for anyone who has been in similar shoes or spent any time facing dire choices in a hospital. Run Time: 101 min | IMDb: 7.6/10 The alternately revolutionary and dispiriting saga of a combative, unapologetic and astoundingly gifted soul singer, Liz Garbus’s doc is a powerful rendering of the struggles Nina Simone faced throughout her career: the ways she became trapped in downward spirals, first of spousal abuse and then of bipolar disorder; and of her desperate, all-consuming urge to affect change on the country during the Civil Rights era. Are there killer performances, musical mash-ups, and dance routines? Sure. But what really makes this music doc stand-out besides the talent of its star is the intimate look fans are given into Beyoncé’s personal life, from her surprise pregnancy to her struggle to get in shape before the event and all the in-between madness and heartbreak.Add To Netflix QueueRun Time: 82 min | IMDb: 7.4/10To understand the enigma that was the Trump campa

It’s a fascinating view of consumerism, the American workforce, culture clashes, and how people can connect with each other despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Run Time: 97 min | IMDb: 7.5/10 In 1992, Sandi Tan, along with her friends, made Singapore’s first indie film. She wrote and starred in it, a project called Shirkers, her two girlfriends produced and edited it, and a man named George Cardona directed. Cardona vanished one day, taking all the film materials with him, and propelling Tan on a decades-long journey to find the truth. It’s an engrossing study in betrayal and the dangers of collaboration, and it works mostly because Tan approaches it from a true-crime mystery angle, stripping it of any nostalgia that might tint her lense. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 95 min | IMDb: 7.1/10 This gripping documentary confronts some hard truths about religion: its power to unite and its power to divide. Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady follow three members of New York’s notoriously insular Hasidic community as they try to break free from their religion while holding onto their families and sense of belonging. Run Time: 121 min | IMDb: 8/10 Bryan Fogel’s Academy Award-winning documentary Icarus wasn’t supposed to involve Russians and doping scandal and cover-ups. Fortunately for Fogel, when the filmmaker decided to test his mettle by competing in one of the toughest cycling competitions in the world and chose to dope to help his chances, he ended up meeting Russian scientist, Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, the director of Russia’s national anti-doping laboratory. The result is this nearly 90-minute film that chronicles Russia’s extensive history with doping and Rodchenkov’s fight for his life after he blows the whistle on the country’s bad practices. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 92 min | IMDb: 7/10 It seems as though we’re all now more aware than ever of how utterly screwed any of us can be in an instant if the system places us in its crosshairs for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and not behaving in a way perceived to be “normal” in the immediate aftermath. Recent true crime documentaries like The Staircase, Making a Murderer and Serial have certainly played a part in illuminating this frightening and unfortunate slice of reality. We can now add Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn’s Amanda Knox to that list. Prepare to be terrified and infuriated as the filmmakers detail how an overzealous Italian prosecutor and a global tabloid press thirsty for a sensational story joined forces to wreck a young woman’s life, largely for their own benefit. As Daily Mail journalist Nick Pisa freely admits on camera — without any trace of remorse or shame — about his work covering the case, “A murder always gets people going… And we have here this beautiful, picturesque hilltop town in the middle of Italy. It was a particularly gruesome murder; throat slit, semi-naked, blood everywhere. I mean, what more do you want in a story?” Run Time: 91 min | IMDb: 6.8/10 Netflix delivers another worthy installment in the true crime series with this truly bizarre tale of a naive, church-going family and the man who preyed upon them. The Brobergs lived in a small town in Idaho with their three young daughters when they met Robert Berchtold, a seemingly-nice family man who doted on the girls, in particular, a 12-year-old Jan Broberg. Over time, Berchtold began grooming Jan and manipulating her parents, engaging in sexual acts with both her father and mother to cause a rift in the family before kidnapping her and brainwashing her into compliance. This saga went on for years and as strange as it sounds, nothing can prepare you for hearing the first-hand account of how this sociopath destroyed this loving family. ign, one must first understand the man behind the historic presidential run. Roger Stone is a well-connected lobbyist, a Republican political trickster responsible for the campaigns of former presidents like Richard Nixon and Ronal Reagan. He’s well-versed in navigating morally-murky waters to help his horse win the race, and we see him do just that in this doc, which follows the mogul over a five-year period as he crafts Trump’s winning-campaign.Add To Netflix QueueRun Time: 90 min | IMDb: 7.3/10One of the strangest, most tragic sports stories in history is that of professional wrestler Dave Schulz and his friend, John du Pont. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 100 min | IMDb: 8.2/10 This 2016 documentary from Ava DuVernay won an Emmy and was nominated for an Oscar during awards season two years ago. The film chronicles the justice system’s abuses against black people, making a case for institutionalized racism being a problem in America that’s only emboldened by the prison cycle. DuVernay boldly explores how prisons and detention centers are making a profit off of free prison labor, most of it done by black men which begs the question, is slavery really dead? Run Time: 85 min | IMDb: 7.4/10 Let’s be honest, Taylor Swift could’ve delivered a glossy, stylized, superficial doc about her life to promote her latest album, and her rabid fanbase would’ve eaten it up. Instead, the pop star took a risk and gave filmmakers no-holds-barred access to her personal and professional life, offering up intimate interviews with herself and her family, detailing difficult struggles with body dysmorphia and eating disorders, allowing cameras inside her sexual assault trial, revealing her mother’s cancer diagnosis, and unearthing home video footage of her youth to create a fuller picture of herself. It’s a film that reveals the human underneath the icon. It’s bold, brutally honest, and some of Swift’s best work yet. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 93 min | IMDb: 8.1/10 Few environmental warrior films do more for the cause than Jeff Orlowski’s Chasing Coral. The doc rounds up a team of scientists, photographers, and divers from around the world to draw attention to an environmental crisis we’ve never seen before — the vanishing of the world’s coral reefs. It works on two levels: By giving us an underwater adventure that attempts to shed light on the mysteries of the deep and highlighting a problem we can see with our own eyes. There’s no denying this one, no looking away, and Orlowski’s crew takes full advantage of that. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 80 min | IMDb: 6.2/10 ’90s crime nostalgia is alive and well in this pseudo-doc from director Kitty Green. Everyone knows how tiny pageant queen JonBenet Ramsey died — bludgeoned to death in the basement of her family home — so Green is less interested in rehashing the investigation into the little girl’s death and more interested in reenacting her life and final moments. To do this, she enlists actors from the area where the family lived, all hoping to play JonBenet or her parents in an upcoming production. Over the course of the film, these thespians are forced to confront the reality of the Ramsey family’s situation which in turn helps viewers to take a look under the surface of this tabloid trauma. Run Time: 103 min | IMDb: 7.7/10 This timely doc gives us a look at the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal that rocked the world of gymnastics just two years ago from the point of view of reporters at the Indianapolis Star in charge of exposing it. A cover-up spanning two decades and involving higher-ups at both US Gymnastics and Michigan State where Nassar served as a physician and professor, this revealing investigation into a sinister culture that’s hidden behind the success of its top female athletes makes you rethink everything you thought about the Olympic dream. Add To Netflix Queue Run Time: 115 min | IMDb: 7.6/10 his marks the first documentary to come from Netflix’s high-profile producing deal with Barack and Michelle Obama.
