@mr-snailman (I'm sorry for answering like that, tumblr not allows me to reply)
but, yes, that's was the point! but i guess even not he rejected it, but the choice was made for him by others, which often was mentioned in the book. also regarding the last chapters, I even had the idea that Marlowe’s refusal was not even as categorical as it might have seemed to us, it was like an incentive to defend own opinion

ok, made a research and Chandler is doing well with symbolism so it can be valid (but it's still with broken english, language barrier and unsubstantiated silly midnight theories)
I had a thought that Terry's changed appearance is a symbol of his choice to which stratum of society to belong. And in La dolce vita and in The long goodbye the main idea is a critique of "high society" with it constant wavering from misuse of power for the sake of personal goals to absolute senseless inaction: "It's no real fun but the rich don't know that. They never had any. They never want anything very hard except maybe somebody else's wife and that's a pretty pale desire compared with the way a plumber's wife wants new curtains for the living room".
and with these thoughts of understanding injustice Philip was giving him chances, he saw a potential in him to be that ideal man, who live with right principles of justice, but i guess Terry have spent too much time among those people and his last meeting with Philip is a exact confirmation of it. and like a Marcello in the ending Terry can't hear the voice of morality.
I was brought to this idea of his change by the constant feeling of pathos given by him throughout their entire dialogue - in words, in appearance
but that's really symbolic layer and not the exact reason of rejection (but even this moment gave to people many other reasons, more valuable. even wiki says that it was because of "inconvenience caused" but can it be so clear?)
impulsive thought: ending of The long goodbye and meaning of ending of La dolce vita is the same fucking thing
