(text) Given I am the one who gifted them in the first place, the least I can do is make sure they are adequately cared for.
(text) And it's not as if I'll be returning them to the space station.
(text) Yes, I have noticed. They like to fancy themselves sneaky, but they're easy enough to spot.
That had one eyebrow rising.
[txt] The cake cats, huh?
[txt] You're a good friend, Ratio.
[txt] I'm sure you've noticed the inevitable IPC spies lurking about.

(text) I had planned on doing so, anyway. I visit daily to ensure his cats are taken care of.
(text) Simply inform me if the need arises.
@veritasverify
[txt] Before I forget to ask
[txt] Since you have been the closest to Aventurine, is there a way you could arrange for his personal things to be picked up from his place?
[txt] If we find him alive that is.

"Their security is usually quite strict, though things are still a bit chaotic after the incident. If anyone could sneak in, it would be him. And to be fair, he'd likely be in disguise. They wouldn't let a high ranking member of the IPC in, no matter what he said."
A shake of his head. "As I said, all he ever said to me was that he can't lose. Though I can't imagine he expected anything good to come of this."
"So not many friends or contacts outside of the IPC? Kinda sad. Which means less people I can get info from. I had hoped he might try to send a message to someone."
She had been considering that line of thinking, but could he really sneak himself on the Xianzhou? She always stayed far away from that place with how strict they are. "If he is out there, he's gonna have a tough time. Guess there aren't many places without the watchful eye of the IPC around the corner. Would the Xianzhou let him in?"

"I started university when I was twelve. I have had more than enough time." And yes, he realized she was getting sidetracked, but it was up to her to decide if it was worth it or not.
When she finally got back to the point, he considered.
"My various conversations with him led me to believe he didn't think he'd ever lose. But it was likely simply his usual bravado. He has no planet to go home to, and after the spectacle he caused, he likely has no place in the IPC. He may even be a wanted man among those who believe him still alive. I imagine he would go somewhere the IPC has no or little influence, but the only place that immediately comes to mind is the Xianzhou Alliance."
"Eight?" Who had the time for that? As far as she knew, he wasn't even that old. He really was king nerd. "Seems a bit excessive. Do you even use them all for your work or-" Right she was getting sidetracked again, but it was hard not to. She wanted to study him like an animal in a nature documentary.
"You seem to have a pretty good understanding of this guy, if he ever did find himself in trouble, what do you think he would do? Seek help? Go into hiding?"

That actually gave him pause. Not really what he’d been expecting.
“…I see. I hope for her sake that he is found alive. I’ve already experienced what it was like for someone to believe they were the only one who survived. I’d rather that not come true for her.”
He arched an eyebrow.
“Making friends with psychologists now?” Well, to be fair, it was one of the graduate majors at the university, so there were plenty of them lurking around.

“Given his history, he has quite a few very unhealthy defense mechanisms. Hopefully if we find him alive, he’ll now be in a better position to address them.”

"The only scenario where I'd be in the running for such a thing would be if the university sent you on a conference or something similar, and they know better than to act like they have any control over what I do with my day."

"I imagine that if you were in need of a handler, I would be able to sympathize quite a lot with them."
"Fortunately for the universe I know how t'handle myself most days." Her voice turned bland. "Besides given our luck if I required a babysitter for whatever reason you'd be the one chosen."

“Of the eight doctorates I hold, none of them are in the study of language. That is simply a personal interest of mine. The more precise my language, the less room there is to be misinterpreted.”
At the question, he said, “Outwardly, Aventurine is a silly and frivolous man. But he would not be one of the Ten Stonehearts if that were fully true. In his relatively short tenure with the IPC, he got quite a lot accomplished. Even if half the time it included leaving the fate of something up to his good luck. But aside from that, yes, being his handler felt not unlike being in charge of an energetic child with even worse self control than usual.”
“In that particular definition of the word straight, yes.”
Without missing a beat, he continued with, “For some reason, he seems to like me. Because of that, our superiors have found I am the most capable of handling him and preventing him from doing anything too stupid. Then again, if we’re referring to the events on Penacony, nothing in my own power could have stopped that.”

She had to cover her mouth to try and hold back the snickering. "Sorry but... You sound like one of those cartoon villains about to give a monologue."

"Yes. There is no point in dumbing myself down just to reach the average level of the drooling masses."
Was this guy for real? "See you say stuff like that with such a straight face and that urge to stuff you in a locker just creeps right up. Do you always talk this way?"

"I believe that you cannot have a sound mind without a sound body. To laze about all day would be doing myself an injustice."
"I can see that... You look pretty sturdy." Her eyes drifted. His outfit did not hide this fact at all. "Did you work out to prevent the bullying, or was that just a nice side effect you discovered?"

"I have yet to meet someone attempting to 'bully' me who was stronger. I have been quite diligent about exercise since I was a child."
"Yet." She emphasized. "Would have to find a locker you could fit into first."
