On Polearms and Other Misrepresented Weapons in Media
A Rant, by Sir VK
Why is it that when you watch a given piece of fantasy or even supposed historically based media, you tend to never see polearms? These weapons dominated the battlefield during their time and were far superior to weapons such as the sword or axe, and why wouldn't they be? They were merely taking a weapon (or two and sometimes three) and putting it on a pole to lengthen its range and give it better leverage. Of course a polearm would outperform a sword or axe. That being said, though, society tends to romanticize swords for some reason or another. This romanticization has led to a lesser amount of polearms then there should be within media, even though the number of polearms and their utility is insane. From more common names, like the war scythe, the bill, the billhook, and the halberd, to lesser know like the partisan, the man catcher, or the voulge; there's plenty of different polearms that could match a character's personality, motivations, and their look, but noooo, for some reason we can't have polearms. Rant over
