Assignment 6 self-evaluation
I fail to add why this research was important to me. I have worked in different organizations for women or people with disadvantages over the years and for me the sense of community it is quite important. I agree that would have been a more interesting way to build the essay and also will have to enrich my practice later on. I also think that writing essays are very difficult for me. Organizing the information meaningfully for the reader seems to be a problem for me. I will keep working on this for the subsequent courses.

Assignment 5: Poetry book

To see the individual pages there are in Behand

Idea
Using poetry to create an image can be a bit overwhelming. Poetry is rich with metaphors and imagery so I had two avenues to follow, try to mimic or closely interpret the main idea in the poem or react to it.
this approach described in the article by Minor White was more interesting. Adding to the poem, reinterpreted, looking for what resonates with me and building from that so the reader can also react to my work and the poem at the same time.
Poems
I chose poems, I am familiar with but I followed the advice of Elizabeth Bulieris in the Domestika course and I read it so many times until I could recite them by memory so I left them aside and started the process of creating a piece.
At this stage I started to work on colour pallets, taking into consideration each one of the poems but also the main feeling.
(see the post Sketchbook post)
The next step was creating different illustrations for the book. I have a step back because I wanted to create something that was authentic to me, that I could recognise as mine but I was always fearful of this so I did a couple of illustrations that while beautiful there were not what I wanted
(see the picture below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two drawing are just examples. This are very similar to the sketchbook work that i did throught the course and even so I like them I was not sure they were representative of what I wanted to express.
In the two pages below you can see the fisrt one, it is nice and lovely but it seems quite enthy of feeling while the second is less produce but resonate better with my feelings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros
1. I was able to explore editorial illustration and two different conceptual approaches.
2. I feel more in tune with my own person as an artist but I still straggling.
3. This will be an interesting path to create a professional portfolio
4. I love the fact that I have two different registers. I can get in touch with two completely different ways to represent a theme, even so, I am straggling to identify the one a prefer for a project.
Cos
1. The experimentation was not successful. I integrated a couple of techniques but not enough to consider it successful.
2. There is a lack of consistency on the pages and I think it is important to modify that for the formal submission

Exercise 5.2: Monoprints
I did something a bit different for the college that was required for this exercise because I wanted to experiment with new techniques so I used this as an opportunity for this.
I used two different monoprints one the gelatine and the other the acetate. Both techniques are based on an online course. While doing the experimentation other ideas came like using the acetate to draw on paper. That was also very successful.
Let's see some examples.
Tumblr media
The image above is one of the raw monoprints done with watercolour ink and gelatine plate. This is a bit more random and difficult to control.
Tumblr media
This is done with acetate. You paint on top and it drys, so you need to scan it. You do not pass the ink to the paper like you will normally do on a monoprint. The texture that creates is rich but the control that you have over it is minimal.
So I wanted to add more control over the work I was doing so I used the acetate as a carbon paper and this was the result
Tumblr media
This drawing is fantastic because the texture is rich the only problem with it is what you need to do in order to add it to a final piece, so this is kind of a puzzle at this stage.
I used all the monoprints, I like them or not as a background so I scan them and clean them in photoshop. This is one of the examples:
Tumblr media
After that was a bit of moving things around until I found a piece that I like. The last two pieces are a combination of the three techniques and I think that was successful.

 Harriet van Reek: 3D work
I have been looking into different artists that used different materials and perspectives to create illustrations and I came across the work of Harriet Van Reek which is beautiful.
It is quite naive and free. The result seems to be far away from the main issue in her work and the feeling and the viewer reaction are at the centre of her work.
Her 3D work is quite simple but lovely. I wonder how this can be used in a more 2D approach. Perhaps to pictures.

Experimental illustration
This was the perfect course for this assignment. I wanted to add more texture and different materials. I used the techniques that I learn in this course on an exercise in this assignment and for the final Assignment I did not use them exclusively but I applied a combination of her techniques.
The course is monoprints and post-processing. I particularly like to use acrylic and ink, I went beyond her materials and I used printing ink, guache, and anything that I could get my hands on.

From Botanical Drawings to Narrative Illustration
I like the focus of the course on creating a practice. I am a bit disorganized I will benefit from a more coherent way to create work.
Also, her work is fantastic.
I finished the course,
using archive photos to set the atmosphere but also how to transient that inspiration, to see why a picture is interesting to me and how to take that and create something with it.

Exercise 2: Creative Audit
This course has been full of experimentation and discovery for me and at the beginning, I felt lost in those processes but at the same time show me that I have a wide range of ways to express ideas and I love that. The last 4 assignment also gave me the opportunity of knowing how I work and my personal process. I do not have a establish way of working, I think I have made some progress.
Sketchbooks
Tumblr media
I haven't found a way to use sketchbooks to their maximum but now I have been able to feel more confident using them. I think I need to focus a bit on this part of the process more
Final pieces
The better pieces for me are the ones that have a concept that is clear from the beginning. I think that my doubts can permeate the way the illustration.
3d "illustrations”
This was my favourite. the pictures need more work but I love the way they are and how they were created. I will create more work like these but they take a lot of time and it is a bit of trial and error so it is quite difficult to do it in 4 weeks if you add research for the project and the technique I want to use.
Books or fanzines
I think books are a safety net for me. They are fun and I love to play with them but sometimes I do them because they are easy rather than being because it is the best for the project. I wound denied that I love editorial and telling stories so the combination of these two are easy for me but I think they are other ways to create objects that are fun and not zines can be an area to explore
Summary
The next step should be to create a path that allowed me to come up with new ways to create pieces that might or not be illustrations, can be 3d pieces or embroidery.

Assignment 5
As a starting point for this assignment, I will be more experimental and try new techniques. Trying new techniques can be relaxing and will allow me to have a more fluid and personal body of work.
I notice that my work is better when I am not thinking too much about how professional it looks but how I feel about it. I think this element is key to creating a more sustainable practice long-term.
I will start by doing courses online and try to integrate the learning into the exercises and projects. The courses can help to guide the experimentation with new techniques because I do normally go back to ideas or expressions that I used before. Not only to find new techniques but also to try new themes. Editorial has been my main interest so I would like to focus on it and explore a wider range of topics starting with the ones I am more familiar with. In summary: I am going to start experimenting with different art techniques like mono-printing and printing. I wanted to do embroidery as an illustration technique but my skill is not there yet I will practice more for the near future.

Assignment 4
Zine
youtube
The zine was a very extensive project, with a substantial amount of illustrations and techniques to communicate different aspects of this imaginary travel. I did several types of research to be able to create the zine, from calligraphy to portrait painting with watercolour.
An Imaginary journey have two parts when I started. The zine was inspired by a 19-century travel book and a wall with paintings and objects that commemorate the trip. I wanted to add textile (embroidery) also painting and small objects but I did not have enough time to finish them. You can see some of the portraits on the zine and the videos.
Tumblr media
Positive 1. The zine is quite "clean" and simple. I like that. You can see the detail of each page easily. 2. I wanted to have different techniques that were harmonic with each other and I think this was very successful. 3. The letter is a nice way to move the narrative foward.
Negative 1. The composition of the pages is so simple that is not conducive to a narrative. 2. I love the way people look with the bright colour background but I got the feeling it is dehumanizing, I did not know how to change that. 3. The zine needs more writing or another way to move the narrative forward.
4. I could not finish the wall.

Assignment 4 (initial ideas and research)
Initial ideas
I started my research on the newspaper library in Spain, I was looking at immigration in the 1800 century when I found travel books written to tell people about their travels and the people and things they saw in these travels. If you do not take the time you will think these books were about actual scientific exploration (there are a couple of exceptions) but most of these books are the Instagram of the time. A way to tell other people what they saw, what they eat, the landscapes and the flora and fauna.
I was fascinated by the detailed description of places and people.
Unfortunately, It took me more time than I was expecting to find something that I like and I waited too much time on the research rather than look for more interesting ways to communicate my imaginary travel.
youtube
In the next video, I show you how I create a mock-up of the zine, it allowed me to see how it looks but also help to see the pages before printing.

Assignment 4: Caligraphy
I did an online course on Caligraphy for this zine. I wanted to create an old fashion feeling so I work on my writing. I used that for the zine’s cover and some of the elements inside the zine
Italic Calligraphy on Domestika Platform
I also wanted to create more experimental and interesting writing for the zine but I did not add it to the final part but these are some examples of my work with it.

Assignment 4: Research
I went to the S.S Great Britain in Bristol to do some research, get a sense of the time, the time of people who travel. I was quite surprised that people travel for tourism when just crossing the ocean was two weeks. The ship was incredible, you could get a sense of the difficulty that people face at that time, the handwriting, looking for jobs in the boat, the doctor, people quarantined.
The pictures show the style of the time, the clothing (I was quite interested in the handmade cloth and embroidery) because I wanted to add some pieces in textile but perhaps I can do it later on.

Assignment 4
Where to start?
It has been a week and I am still in the same place. I am terrified to start anything. I have a couple of projects for portfolio development but I think they are safe bets.
1. 100 short stories. This is my favourite because I have read most of them and some stories are very challenging.
2. Identity: I think this is very interesting if you look for a different angle.
3. Society: I have different topics that I might want to work like homogenization, standardization. I even thought of finishing the fanzine I did last Assignment but I am not sure about any of those topics.
Feather down the line
(The general Idea)
This has been a particularly difficult idea to find. I decided to create an imaginary trip from Spain to Latin America. This is still a very brought idea. I have been “researching” travel journals from the 1800s to the 1920s to be inspired by the artwork in the journals but also get a feeling of what people experience and how they communicated that experience to others.
As I look, into more and more memoirs and journals of travels. They are all written by men and they expected them to be also read by men. Fortunately, this is an imaginary trip and I will be bringing forward women and how women travel and live. Another distortion of these memoirs, if they were also done by wealthy people who were travelling for pleasure or exploration (my favourite type of books because there were rich in details, descriptions and illustrations) but they do not show other people like cooks or seamstress.
Note from the future: I found a woman journalist who was also a refugee from Spain. She co-authored a travel journal (quite fantastic).
How I will compose the project?
A sketchbook is a great place to start and create a set of an artwork base on the work in the sketchbook. I want a 19th century feeling in the work but also an element of fantasy.
