sorry for the lack in updates! This feels sudden, but ive been thinking about it for a while so ill ask it while im finishing going through submissions. ive gotten a few submissions here and there that, while not popular on the main web in their own right, feel too popular to add to this poll as a regular contestant, so i was wondering

should i make them superbosses?

Now. You might be asking. What is a superboss?

Superbosses are going to be a set of characters that will show up at the very end of the tourney. our champion and full winner of the bracket will go against each of them, from what i deem least to most popular. Now Note:

superbosses will have no affect on the the actual tournament, or its winners. this is all for fun, and to give some of the less likely to qualify ships a chance to shine

the list of superbosses will not be revealed until we finish the tournament, however-

certain ships in the preliminary/qualifier polls will have the option to either be regular competitors, or superbosses. the choice is yours

a superboss beating the current bracket champion will not change their status, and the superboss will not be dubbed the tournament winner. think of them as postgame content.

i will not be taking suggestions for extra superbosses. all sbs will be coming directly from my submissions box

Notable rarepairs is probably my favourite suggestion for a new name, I'll think about it! :D

Also, ironically the soap opera I used as an example in my last ask would probably not get in after all! Did a few more google searches and it turns out that it actually has a pretty active fic community, it just wasn't on ao3.

The main reason I haven't made the tournament yet (besides being busy) is I can't decide how many fics a fandom should have before it's "disqualified"... Due to personal experience* I'm tempted to put the limit at 25 available fics in total, but maybe 50 would be more fair to submitters in other countries with a larger population? Of course I'd care less about the exact numbers if it turns out that the same person wrote every single fic.

*relatively small population in my home country + many other youngsters here suffering from a bit of "cultural cringe" (<- that's the actual academic term!) + ??? = even the most popular works from here only get 15 fics by 5 authors at most :')

It feels hard to quantify how much fics a ship needs to count (the fic limit I mentioned wasn’t a hard rule, more than just a general basis to go off of.) it’s one of those case-by-case things to me, considering a notable ship could have 20 fics, but they could all be by one dedicated shipper. 25 sounds pretty good to be honest, but if use it as a guideline rather than a hard rule. If worst comes to worst you can always put ships you aren’t sure abt into a pre-bracket poll!

Are you a fan of the classic friends-to-lovers trope? Do you live for the moment of “Oh. Oh.” in fics? Do you scream at every instance of pining? If so, then this is the tournament for you! This tournament is brought to you by two mods, Mod Deli (she/her; 18+) and Mod Soba (she/they; 18+) , and we hope you enjoy your time here! ♡

Rules & Guidelines:

As the name implies, they have to be FRIENDS to lovers. The ship does NOT have to be canon; headcanons are perfectly fine. Edit: You can submit OCs, but there's no guarantee they will be shortlisted. It will be tough competing with canon characters so you'll want to make your propaganda super convincing to increase their chances of being shortlisted

“How about enemies to friends to lovers?” That’s a fantastic trope which deserves a tournament of its own. As such, we won’t be allowing any enemies to friends to lovers ships (same with rivals to friends to lovers). However, strangers to friends to lovers are acceptable. If your ship has any unique variations of this ‘friends to lovers’ pipeline, please send an ask and we’ll use our best discretion to determine if your ship meets the criteria

Polycules are welcome!

Be respectful at ALL times, to us and to others. If we see any hate or ship bashing, we’ll block you on sight, no questions asked. TERFs, racists, sexists, ableists, and other breeds of bigots stay the fuck away. Our tournament, our rules.

No Harry Potter or Youtubers/Vtubers/other real-life public figures who are still alive. We’ll only consider real-life sources if they are funny enough

Please keep to an appropriate age difference between your blorbos. As a rule of thumb, no one under 18 with anyone over 18 (though if your blorbos are very close to 18 by +/- 1–2 years we would consider them)

You’re allowed to submit multiple ships from the same fandom; just start a new form if you want to submit a different ship. However, please only submit ONE ship each time

Propaganda and info-dumping is welcome and encouraged!

Shortlisting criteria: We’re looking for at least 3 submissions for a ship and/or very convincing propaganda, so show your passion for your lovebirds! That said, we’re also humans with our own blorbos so we may give ships from fandoms we’re in favourable consideration, but we’ll also try to be as fair as possible to everyone

Between the two of us we know a fair number of fandoms but we don’t know EVERY piece of media out there. We’ll do our best to do background checks, but things might still slip by us. As such, if you see any ship you think is problematic, please politely let us know and explain your reasoning in an ask (no DMs because this is a shared sideblog, but you can request for us to answer your ask privately as long as you turn off anon)

Submissions will be closed on 30 June 2023, 6am PST or when we have enough submissions (we're looking at maybe 64 right now but that's subject to change)

If you don’t mind me asking, as a fellow Ninjago fan, what ships were eliminated? If only to fill my morbid curiosity

I don’t want to specify any ships that fall under the ‘rarepair’ category since the ppl submitting them were probs just excited and the infodumps were cute but unfortunately ppl who either interact notably/are popular can’t rlly count.

And now I know this ones on me since I didn’t mention it, but no fuckin Harry Potter. With how against HP all the other blogs were I thought ppl would’ve just started assuming by now and not try submitting it. Once again though, kinda on me with not mentioning it.

This one I mentioned though: no real people. I’ve had someone try to submit some YouTubers to me and I do understand that it’s like a persona or something and not ‘technically the guy’, but the line rides too close for me to be willing to accept it. YouTubers count as people. Colonel Sanders is up for debate tho.

I get this is more of just a specification of the rules than an actual list of ships like you probably wanted! But I’d feel bad putting out a list of stuff not getting accepted since I don’t want to put ppl on blast, and for the stuff I don’t mind saying like hp, I just do not remember off the top of my head and do not care abt the ships enough to check them </3

How are you planning on doing the polls? Just putting the ship, summarizing the essay, putting the whole essay, etc?

I plan on doing a few 32-or so brackets, and then having the winners of each of those brackets competing with eachother! It’ll be easier for me to digest/go through, and it’ll make the names on each bracket picture readable!

As for essays, I’ll be heavily encouraging propaganda of all sorts, but I don’t feel comfortable with using submissions essays as propaganda for each bracket, since I never asked if the submitters were okay with me posting those publicly. I’ll likely do my own rewrite/summary of reasons why ppl ship them, though, so ppl understand why they were submitted!

aw DAMN i missed submissions :( my bestie and i have like the perfect ship for this. we've been fixated on it and we are literally the ONLY people in the world who seem to ship it. they don't even have an ao3 tag, and the fandom has like 3k-ish fics so it's not like it's a super small fandom. granted tho they may have been disqualified by actually having canon interactions

Have you known that a ship exists, but you have never thought of it that much until one day you realize you ship it and you don't know how it happened? Or have you thought that a ship wouldn't work but then somehow were convinced otherwise? Or you didn't know about a ship and suddenly said ship is everywhere and you can't help but fall in love with it? Well, then this contest is for you!

Shipping is a very funny part of any media! There are ships and ships, some cannon you love or hate, some no-cannon that you wish they had ended up together... and ships you don't know how you ended up shipping.

Really, there are ships you don't know how you ended up shipping! One day you are chill, happy with your life, and the next you are obsessing with a ship you might not even have known that it existed. In fact, that has happened to me twice just this year, so I decided to create a contest for those ships!

Rules:

Please, be respectful to everyone. Don't be rude to someone just because you don't like the ship or be mean in the tags or reblogs. Let everyone enjoy what they enjoy.

Propaganda is allowed and encouraged as long as you follow the first rule!

You can submit any ship you want, however, because I am not very familiar with a lot of media, I will ask you to please refrain from submitting any ship that you think might cause controversy or if they come from a very controversial media (like Harry Potter or South Park). You will be helping me a lot if you do this!

There are three exceptions to the above rule is that you CAN'T submit an illegal ship, nothing that features an adult with an underage. These ships will be instantly banned.

Also, for this contest, I will not accept OC's as part of the ship.

And last but not least, nothing that features real people. Singers, actors, youtubers, streamers, NO-ONE of flesh and meat.

The ship doesn't have to be cannon, they might not even interact in cannon, who cares? As long as you don't know how you ended up shipping them, then you can submit it! You can even submit characters from different media!

You can submit as many ships as you want but don't submit the same ship twice. Number of entries will not have that much of an influence in deciding if a ship enters or not.

Instead, I added a question for you to tell how you realized you shipped this. It can be anything! You didn't know about the ship but one day you saw a cute fanart of them and OMG they are adorable together; you didn't think of them as a couple but someone convinced you that they are pretty cute together and know you are ready to sink with the ship; or you know that the ship isn't that good in the story they are from, but my god, how could you not ship them?

This is not mandatory, of course, but the funniest and most interesting stories will have a better chance of entering the tournament.

Most important rule... have fun!

Hi there! I'd like to make a bracket that's KIND OF similar to yours and would like some feedback on the name.

I'm thinking of calling it "popular-rareship-bracket". Take a moment to guess what this could mean. Then let me explain:

Sometimes a piece of media has a lot of casual fans, but barely anyone is creating fanworks about it. For example, my parents have been watching reruns of a soap opera with over 1000 episodes together - it's undoubtedly popular! I got curious about whether there was fic of it, and found only 11 fics in total (on ao3). What's more, only 1 of these fics was dedicated to a specific ship: two best friends in the show, one who has been in over 800 episodes and counting, one who was around for over 100 episodes (before dying suddenly :( )

It is this kind of ship I'm looking for! They have interacted a lot in canon and have a bog audience, yet the existing audience just isn't that ship-happy... Aside from like two people, who would hopefully find the submission form in time and send me a loving rant about how underappreciated the ship is.

So with that in mind, is the suggested tournament name suitable? I'm worried that it might be a bit confusing since rarepairs are the opposite of popular by definition... But can't think of anything better either ^^;

Off the top of my head? I think they only repeats so far have been like. Clarifications? Or just multiple(2-3) ppl of a small friend group submitting a ship bcs they both wanted to infodump about it. I don’t want to put any viable ships on blast before the polls actually start(unless someone deliberately wants to send some propaganda for them wink wink) so I’ll only say that all the repeats so far have either been because:

1: got too excited and forgot the essay

2: forgot a member of the polycule

3: two ppl just REALLY wanted to infodump
