[deep breath]
If you can't write Patwa, BBE/MLE, or AAVE correctly and respectfully, don't.
Patwa (or Jamaican Patois) is not a dialect of English. It is its own language. If you're going to write a character speaking it - looking at Hobie Brown writers specifically - treat it with at least the same respect you treat the Morales' Spanish. (And in some cases y'all need to treat the Morales' Spanish with more respect anyway.)
BBE (Black British English), MLE (Multicultural London English), and AAVE (African American Vernacular English) are dialects of English, but even they have sub-dialects within them.
Patwa, BBE, MLE, and AAVE all have rules. If you don't know the rules, learn them. If you don't have the time, energy, or desire to learn them, just use WME (white mainstream English) instead of "bad English".
(Also, don't make Hobie Jamaican just because of stereotypes. Afro-Caribbean Brits have a rich - and specific - culture and history, most noticeably from the Windrush generation onwards. I do love that for him, but some of y'all see his wicks and make decisions solely on that. Do your research. Do better.)
Disclaimer: I'm a Native linguist, I'm not Black. I know what I'm talking about, but actual Black folk know more. Listen to them over me.

Start of my Hobart Brown obsession
british slang/dialect: "peng", "alls i 'eed is a wank n a biscuit."*, "that's for true", "piss off", "bloody 'ell"
hear me out him saying "all i need is a wank and a biscuit" is him joking after getting hurt, that is his "'tis a flesh wound"*
"big steppa" rly makes me think islander roots, which makes me think of hobie with caribbean ancestory, which makes me play #twerk it by busta rhymes ft. nicki, which becomes a teasing fantasy on its own
listen... him saying pum pum in reference to the vag, and it's mainly when he wants to be cute or affectionate with his dirty talk or very suggestive flirting
him taking care of you on your worst days? like making sure you eat, get good sleep (no matter the method), soothing you through a break down or spiral, giving you reassurance
hear me out... the back rubs, the cuddles, the forehead and cheek kisses. bonus points if it's a moment of just sobbing and reassurance and once he sees you've stabilized a bit he tries to get you to laugh
hobie with a nihilist black gf... yes this a bit of a personal indulgence, all of this is hear me tf out, just think about it. he gets with this girl bc her "crap on the establishment" is literally saying "all of this is pointless, we're on a literal floating rock, do what you want."
speaking of alt black power couple... punk x goth. like you can't tell me that wouldn't be cool and fun af
speaking on alt black folks, hobie being into anime intrests me. i did a character ai and went for pop team epic (bc that anime has no consistency) and one of the replies knew the characters names, listen i just think y'all watching animes together and talking about them would be fun... along with like knowing openings and outros. singing them together!! come on.
more brit nd caribbean slang i remember from a college course, arctic monkeys and other random spots in my brain that light up thinking about how hobie speaks
wifey, pickney, blud
bin, right/proper, slag, shag

Okay so I've noticed people critiquing the Spanish in Miguel O'hara fanfics and the British Black sling for Hobie. I'm not sure what to do for the British sling for the fanfic I want to post about because I'm black/native and live in the South and have only met 2 British people in my life and they are both white. I've tried to find British sling generators and they suck so I what imma do is just study some black British. YouTubers and see if I can get get down the lingo enough to make it sound natural.
Now for Miguel I actually might have an ace in the hole since my familie's business recently got large Spanish speaking clientele due to me changing our menu to Spanish. And I have spanish speaking friends and family. Irish on the other hand I have an abundance of friends and teachers of Irish descent to can get info from since oddly most of my white friends are of Irish descent.
For the record: I know very little Spanish and can understand and read it way more than I can speak it....But I've learned some things and I want to see if I'm right.
1. Every country has a different dialect. For example Venezuelan and Spain Spanish sounds different from for example Domincan and Mexican Spanish.
2. Spain Spanish is considered 'proper' Spanish and if not favored amongst other Spanish speaking communities. Spaniards are like the British of Spanish essentially. (My black people out there already know since it's like Proper or British English vs the different varieties of Aave)
3. If you have to use a translator DO NOT USE GOOGLE TRANSLATE. Google translate is apparently painfully proper and sometimes does not make since when translated from proper/aave English. Find a different translator as Spanish speaking readers can tell immediately.
4. Miguel is Irish/ Mexican. Irish people actually have their own different dialects that differs in every region. They have different languages spoken in Ireland as well.
5. I'm assuming mixed people of Irish/Mexican descent would appreciate them both featured in fanfics. Maybe?
6. I think for my black people out there that live in America at least if we struggle with black British sling we could lean on black aave in different states that sound similar to it. I feel like Baltimore aave might work. I grew up in Detriot and in the current southern state I'm in and it sounds similar depending on the pronunciation of words. (Btw white people out there who don't have many black friends or people that's live around you, aave or african amercan vernacular English sounds different in every state. For example look up Louisiana aave and New York aave and you will understand) I feel like for black writers our normal aave but just stronger could work as well for Hobie.
So as a takeaway, if you want your fics to read a bit easier for your black, British, and Spanish speaking readers, ya might want to do a bit of research. Or maybe make your own universe version of that charecter. I thought about making a Southern Hobie Brown since I have a friend I want to base him off as he reminds me of Hobie so freaking much. From the dark liner and choker to the constantly critiquing the government and authoritarian figures and not like consistency in certain areas on his life. So yeah that's what I got.
If anyone wants to add on and give some more tips to make my fics better, let me know. I'll be posting soon. Also tell me if I'm wrong.

Hii quick question HOW DO YOU WRITE HONIE TALKING SO WELL, like i’ve learned basic british and roadman vernacular and i’ve watched a bunch of Daniel Kaluuya’s interviews and stuff to try and better pick up how he talks and now that i’ve gotten all that I DONT KNOW HOW TO WRITE FOR THE ACCENT, so if you have any tips or you could explain it a little i would appreciate you so so so much 🙏
also i love your work, like seriously it’s so amazing i’m obsessed
hey anon! so honestly, i can give a rundown of what goes through my head but this is all what works for me so dont feel like u have to use it!
Tumblr media
so first, to figure out dialogue and what he would do, i figure out his characteristics. hobie is a cool punk guitarist and anarchist; he’s anti-authoritan, laid-back, and overall a chill guy as long as ur chill with him. so i take that into consideration when writing his dialogue. this is a good example;
{person}: why don’t you and i split up to catch them both
bad example: {hobie}: “sure, i can do that. be careful.”
good example: {hobie}: “not safe that way. c’mon, we’ll catch them.”
so, after all dialogue is done with hobie in my fic, and the fic overall is done, i go back and fill in his accent. to explain, i basically remove some letters from some words, add some british slang, and some dialect for how hobie talks. here are some examples of that:
important -> impor’ant
sweetheart -> swee’heart
darling -> darlin’
them -> ‘em
it’s -> ‘s
alright -> alrigh’
fucking -> bloody
clue -> scooby doo (in some cases)
hobie -> ‘obie
am not -> ain’t
WIKIHOW IS ACTUALLY A GOOD SOURCE!! if u need extra help on how to write it this is a good source i’ve used before!
it’s also important to note that hobie brown is made to be “effortlessly cool”. so whatever he says is natural, rolls right off the tongue. he’s quick with what he says and is just overall a natural charmer. SO UTILIZE THAT!! make his words flirty in a romantic sense, make his words quick and comforting in those situations, make him quick on his feet when in Spider-punk situations.
one last thing is that hobie is not a toxic guy who would neglect someone in a relationship. he very obviously cares about those he meets. HE KNEW MILES FOR 10 MINS AND HELPED HIM. hobie can be a very suave and romantic guy, so it’s best to write him as such. a lot of the time, people struggle to write characters because they arent writing them right and mischaracterize them!
hope this helped! <3

Nuh body couldn't remind mi seh todeh ah modda tongue day? Happy International Language Day!
In honour of the day, I share a poem by the late, great Jamaican poet Louise 'Miss Lou' Bennett-Coverley.
Tumblr media
'No Lickle Twang' or 'No Little Accent' highlights the predominant attitudes of our parents & grandparents through a mother speaking to her son who has just returned to Jamaica after living in America for a while. This belief that the language of our colonisers is superior & the standard. If we spend time in developed countries the thought is that we should adopt their language and/or accent and drop our own because only then will we be 'better'. Even now, despite the popularity of our mother tongue, Jamaican Patois is generally frowned upon in school and professional settings.
Me? Mi love my modda tongue suh till.

hii, i was wondering if you write for Hobie Brown (spider-punk!!)? if you do, maybe just relationship hcs??
if not that totally okay!!
Spider-Punk Headcanons.
hobie brown x black!male reader.
warnings : swearing ,, mentions of fighting ,, horrible british slang bc im not british<3.
since he's quite rebellious ( and spiderman ) he definitely takes you to underground illegal concerts of his own as he knows he can protect you from danger.
tries to teach you how to play guitar whenever he can,, you're definitely no good at it but you enjoy his enthusiasm.
everyday you see him you're placing new pins on his jacket or stickers on his sneakers.
he wouldn't hesitate to beat the shit out of someone who tried to mess with you,, especially in a crowd of people.
has pretty foul language,, however tries his best to tone it down once he realized you didn't enjoy it.
" what a fucking wanker he is. "
" hobie.. "
" right, right.. i'm sorry, toots. he just really pis— upsets me. "
always stands up for you and you do the same.
the moment someone calls him names or berates his actions you're immediately there defending his name while he watches you with adoration and pride.
people call him a bit wacky,, and he is— but he's yours and that's all you care about.
he doesn't mind letting you wear the pants in the relationship if you desire.
probably holds your hand when he having a sweet moment, however when he's rambling,, walking down the street or escorting you to school or work,, his arm is wrapped around your shoulders.
keeps you significantly close to him subconsciously.
if you're not british he tries to copy your accent the best he can.
you in turn copy his accent as well,, it's easier than you thought.
he visits you at home in extra ways,, never knocking on your front door but swinging outside your window until you notice.
kisses you upside down every chance he gets.
allows you to wear his suit sometimes but never lets you wash it.
" your drier is stupid, it'll shrink my suit and i can't fight when my bollocks are being squeezed all to hell. "
since you're both black,, he's very helpful when it comes to wash day.
no matter your hair type,, hobie always has a way to detangle your hair in the most non painful way ever.
he doesn't exact do retwists but he does allow you to help him maintain his hair and keep his wicks (??) healthy.
haircare within its self is a date between you two.
is always nagging you about using cantu because he saw you pick it up one time at a hair shop.
almost had a heart attack when he learned you didn't know how to do your own hair.
from then on he's swung by every two weeks to help you maintain whatever hair style you got that month.
to conclude- he loves you very much and would probably become a villain if he lost you :D

okay okay bit random but as a british person (yes im admitting to this) who lives around people who speak like hobie brown
PLEASE STOP WRITING HOBIE'S ACCENT LIKE HE'S HARRY STYLES 😭😭😭😭
(pls read below the cut)
you do not need to add an apostrophe every 2 sounds and make his speech unreadable we know he has an accent....
use it in moderation . a few sounds omitted are fine but please. you do not need to be doing 4D chess trying to portray every little quirk of his speech
a lot of the times if you over-do the accent it doesn't even sound right when you read it out? (to me it reads like an american or northern accent usually)
trust me we know how he sounds
OKAY OKAY bit of cultural trivia if you want to use slang you're probably gonna be looking at jamaican patois slang (EDIT: MLE or multi-cultural london english is the more appropriate term for his dialect! pls check the reblogs for a better explanation of it by somebody else)
in ATSV the only thing i can remember him saying is "mandem" and he tends to use other phrases like "man" and "my guy" to refer to others he's close with
not every piece of jamaican patois slang is commonly used in MLE
MLE is predominantly found in areas like south london or camden (where hobie is from)
hobie also seems to dial down his accent when speaking to people who aren't from his universe (my reasoning anyway)
his accent is actually very subtle compared to what i've seen irl
hobie is very witty and tends to speaks fast with a lot of filler words like "yeah?" and "alright?" and you wanna focus on things like word order and structure (for example the word "I" tends to be missing a lot so "i went to the cinema" would just be "went to the cinema" etc etc)
im not the best at writing hobie either and i wish he got more screentime but focus on capturing his personality rather than his accent pls
he's a teenager from a deprived area NOT A WHITE BRITISH HEARTHROB PLEASE STOP WRI'IN 'IM LI' 'ARRY BLOODY STOILES
sincerely a brit who really loves hobie but not so much the attempts at his accent
will reblog or edit with any other thoughts i have about this id appreciate any other british people's input too
PLEASE check out the reblogs on this !!!!

Researching Characters so you don't have to Part 1: Hobie Brown & His Accent
Tumblr media
Art above IS NOT MINE! Click for the link to the original art! Artist: @Jay19
A lot of people write Hobie Brown like Tom Holland, but this just isn't accurate if you want to write a good fan fiction. Hobie is a homeless black teen from the 70s, who was born in Cambridge, and is also a punk. He's not gonna sound like Aaron Warner or Tom Hiddleston. Just because he has a British accent doesn't mean he's going to sound like your average British movie star.
British English is a dialect, not technically an accent. An accent is how someone pronounces words, while a dialect includes pronunciations, but also includes general vocabulary and grammar. This means that despite Hobie speaking English, he won't use the same vocabulary that American-English speakers use, so if you write him that way it won't be accurate.
The British accent that most people are used to is called Received Pronunciation, which is considered the "upper-class" British Accent. However, Hobie does not have a a Received Pronunciation accent. He's cockney. They do not sound the same as upper-class British people, and have a completely different set of vocabulary.
How do you write a cockney accent?
Rule 1: Never pronounce the "H"
For example, house becomes 'ouse. Hat becomes 'at. Hello becomes 'Ello. By writing the words with an apostrophe in place of the "h", it would read more accurately.
Rule 2: -ing becomes -in
For example, running becomes runnin'. Helping becomes 'elpin' (because both the h and the g are silent). Walking becomes walkin'. Those speaking in a cockney accent don't pronounce the "g" part of the ending -ing.
Rule 3: Words starting with "th-" are usually replaced with "f-"
For example, thing becomes fing. This becomes fis. However, don't overdo it. If you write out every word starting with an f, it'll become difficult to read. Only do it if you're trying to enunciate some words over others. Even if you're trying to write an accent, it should still be comprehensible.
There's other rules as well, but these were the main three I saw during my research!
How do you write a cockney dialect?
Cockney rhyming slang
Hobie consistently uses Cockney rhyming slang in ATSV. For example, he calls Miles, "Peter Pan" which is Cockney rhyming slang for "Little man". Using Cockney rhyming slang can make your writing seem more authentic
Some other examples are "Apples and pears" for stairs. "bees and honey" for money, etc. You can google other ones for any words you want to use!
As always research is your best friend, so while writing Hobie, make sure to have another page open with lots of slang and other words available for you to use in your writing to make your character sound as authentic as possible!
Note: I'm not cockney nor British, so if you see any mistakes with my writing, please let me know <3

super short london slang guide !!
i haven't got a scooby doo about cockney so this is mainly gonna be mle and like the way 14 year old secondary school boys talk oookay let's go (just so yk i am a londonder!!!!!)
direct things to call people (or avoid calling people)
bruv, blud, man, mate, fam (can use in replacement of a pronoun like he, she, you and i or for emphasis — "man's got a meeting, bruv!")
more on "man" it can be used in plural too — "us man" or "them man" or "you man"
my g, my guy (for referring someone you are friendly/friends with)
bossman (something you'd call a shop or business owner — "aye bossman get me the 3 wings and chips yeah")
big man (usually used in a sarcastic friendly but kind of demeaning way, the older cousin of "big guy" — "oi big man what you sayin' cuz?"
i wasnt going to put these here cause of personal preference but 😭 people are gonna use them anyway so i might as well tell you what they mean:
peng (adjective cute/pretty — "her? she's peng!")
leng (adjective hot/sexy — "rah, he's leng you know?)
nouns
ting (usually to refer to a girlfriend but can also just mean "thing"... or a knife? — "don't chat to my ting fam!")
grim (very outdated word for a promiscuous woman — "she's a grim bruv!")
skeng (gun)
shank, spinner (knife)
paper, Ps, pronounced "peas" (money)
ends (neighbourhood, area — "if i catch you in my ends yeah")
mandem (group of friends — "having a laugh at the pub with the mandem" aha)
gyaldem (group of women / female friends)
ganja (weed)
blem (cigarette)
pagan/paigon (snitch or untrustworthy person, not a super common you might wanna use "snake" or "snitch" instead)
wasteman (someone who's useless, a lowlife)
pussio/pussyo (pussy, coward)
other common words and phrases
wagwan, or "wag1" in text (what's up, what's going on)
bare (a lot — "i got bare problems with him!")
gassed (prideful, full of yourself — "im actually so gassed, man got promoted"
"and that" (instead of "and stuff" — "i got links and that")
"allow it" (let something slide — "i forgot my wallet allow it bossman")
safe (like "alright cool", or as a bye — "aight safe")
"pattern up" (fix up, get it together)
hard, tight (cool, good, though "hard" is also used in an offensive way — "bro thinks he's hard, pussio")
blam (to get shot, not actually very common to hear in my experience)
sheffed (up), shanked (to get stabbed)
ahlie (used as an interjection when in agreement with something, similar to phrase "am i lying?")
non-mle specific words i hear sometimes
thick (dumb, stupid)
clapped/tapped (ugly, weird, unattractive)
merk/murk (kill, beat up)
slag, sket (slut)
chav (used to refer to someone of the low social status, associated with violent or rude behaviour)
taking the mick, taking the piss (being annoying)
mad (means crazy obviously but people use it a lot, can have positive and negative connotations — "that's mad!")
nonce (literally means pedophile / sex offender, do what you will with it 😭)
dickhead, bellend (similar to douchebag)
wanker (used towards someone you dislike, or in a joking way)
geezer (usually to refer to an old man)
also!!!
depending on which communities are predominant in the area, words from other languages can come in / have come in
some words are common with US slang too because they share origins 😁 ain't that cool
there's a lot of influence from jamaican patois due to the history of british jamaicans in london for ex in words like "ting" or "mandem" or "wagwan" (hence why mle is sometimes referred to as "jafrican") and its not strange to hear "bomboclaat" or "bloodclaat" here either
in communities where there's muslims and arabs (especially in east london) you might hear arabic terms like "wallahi", "khalas" or "astagfirullah" (though people debate whether that's cultural appropriation or not)
south asians have also had an influence with words like "gora" or "ganja" though again this is largely area based and the impact of hinglish is also found a lot outside of london
some people have a mix of different dialects! i mainly alternate between mle and estuary (sometimes yorkshire don't ask it is very easy to pick up...)
you're not gonna hear every single word here all the time the usage varies throughout london. the way north and west londoners speak can be v different for example
uhhhh if you wanna learn properly just listen to some grime or sutn . listen to londoners speak!
for some more resources in-depth PLEASE check out these guides made by other british people ! (one and two)
ok that's it bye bye british ppl & londoners feel free to add on! it is midnight rn so ive probably missed stuff lol... dms are open in case you've got any questions or want any help :p

Begging people to stop reblogging this AI trash from “The Phantom Painter” on Instagram (instagram.com/phantom.painting). I’ve been seeing it on my dash more and more often from people who are otherwise anti-AI and either can’t tell it’s AI or don’t care because it looks cool.
This is the kind of shit that is VERY CLEARLY trained on the works of existing talented artists’ with distinct styles and this asshole is selling prints and making a profit off of stealing other people’s hard work.
Don’t give people like this money or attention and they will go away.
Please, if you’re going to buy art prints, buy them from an actual artist.
