Styling Project: Terra
ABOUT TERRA
Terra is for a woman who has a deep connection with nature but she is also highly involved in digital footprint. Terra also embodies a women who shop local, believes in quality over quantity and zero waste packaging. She is eco-chic.
ABOUT THE PHOTOSHOOT
Since Terra women are involved in the digital world, and they are also conscious of the environment, I decided to collide those two worlds together on the photoshoot. The photographs were taken on the photography studio at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh by Jameek Booth who is an AIP student majoring in Photography. The outfits were by modeled by AIP Fashion Design student, Kiley Grant. This photoshoot is not your typical outdoor shoot, we added a white backdrop and used the projector to recreate a virtual nature scenery since the trend is about being Eco-conscious and virtually connected.
COLLAB: GABY X JOSH
For this photoshoot, I collaborated with my colleague Joshua Hodgson, despite the fact is about Men Trends S/S 18, has the same vision as my trend. Sojourn S/S 18 consists of layering, utility clothing, knits, smart clothing, bean boots and much more...
TERRA AND I
I relate to Terra because, thanks to my ethics and environmental classes, I am more aware of sustainability, climate change, the standards of a supply chain and how we are all accountable for our shared home (Earth). Now as a Fashion student I can shop smarter, greener, local, and still look good.
ABOUT HAIR, MAKE-UP & STYLING
The hair and make-up were very natural, and light since the trend is about nature plus the model had flawless skin. I told the model to keep her glasses because it gave more of a quirky personality to the outfits.
For the styling of the outfits, there was a lot layering, knits, quilted nylon, vinyl raincoats. I tried to recreate as possible the trend Terra by using their essential items and color schemes.
Look #1: Sweater dress, corset belt, faux coats, beaded cuff bracelet, red statement earrings
For this look, since there was not print, I played a lot with complementary colors like red and greens. The corset belt accentuated her waist, to make the outfit more complete.
Look #2: Vinyl raincoats, knit sweater, loose trousers and long necklace
For this look, I also played with colors, texture and also added one of the key elements for accessories, that the trend Terra suggested: the long necklace.
Look #3: knit sweater, A-line dress, quilted coat, corset belt, and paper bag
For this look I played with texture and prints. There is knits, quilted nylon, floral prints. Since my trend is F/W 18-19, there is a lot of layering and heavy materials. The paper bag is just a representation of zero waste packaging and sustainability.

Audrey Hepburn (1929–1993)
About Audrey Hepburn
“Audrey Hepburn was a Belgian-British actress and fashion legend best known for her roles in Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and My Fair Lady. She collaborated with and wore many designs by Hubert de Givenchy. She was also active with children’s charity work. Ironically, her celebrated waiflike figure was a product of malnutrition she suffered during World War II (Style Wise: A Practical Guide In Becoming A Fashion stylist by Shannon Burns-Tran, page 162 ).”
Fashion Influence
She had a strong sense of Fashion, Audrey Hepburn was tall and slim, with a pixie haircut that drew more emphasis to her strong cheekbones and big, dark eyes. she wore even the simplest item of clothing with extra flair.
Hepburn wore favored clean lines and a slim fit in plain colors. Many of her clothes were inspired by the look of men's wear, but it all had a distinct and absolute femininity.

The first visual many people will have when thinking about Audrey Hepburn and fashion is of her iconic outfit in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. Wearing a body-skimming, sleeveless black dress worn with white opera gloves and accessorized with a big hat, sunglasses and a long cigarette holder, she is the embodiment of glamour.
Coco Chanel had originated the idea of the little black dress, that perfect item that every stylish woman had to have, and Audrey Hepburn showed women how it could continue to be worn to great effect in a new era.

The little black dress is still iconic, stylists, designers and retailers still utilize the style because is a classic and it never goes out of style.

Today the little black dress can have different silhouettes, fabrics and collars, but is still look elegant for any event.
Another iconic style was the clean lines and a slim fit in plain colors, masculine inspired. This style is currently trending, people feel more comfortable with their sexuality and gender, making clothing non-binary, it can also be minimalist.

By wearing minimalist clothing, you have the opportunity to mix and match with more outfits. If it feels to boring add a flair. It can be edgy heels or a colorful earrings.

Fashion Eras: 1900-1909
Background of the era
1900-1909 known as the Edwardian period and the progressive era. London society in the Edwardian Era was dominated by the King. The legend that surrounds the era is primarily due to the influence of Edward VII. The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States that spanned from the 1890s to the 1920s. The main objectives of the Progressive movement were eliminating problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and corruption in government. In addition to notable fashion influences included French haute couture, Asian art, and important societal changes such as women’s roles.
Events
Big events around the world during this period included:
- The New York subway begins on the first section from City Hall to the Bronx in the year 1900.
-25% of all cars that were sold in 1900 were electric cars.
-Marconi sends first wireless transmission over 2000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from Cornwall, England to Newfoundland, Canada.
-William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States is assassinated by Leon Czolgosz in 1901
-Queen Victoria dies at the age of eighty one. She had nine children, and left Edward as her heir.
-For the first time fingerprint evidence is used to solve a murder case in 1909.
- Explorers Robert E. Peary and Matthew A. Henson claim to become the first men to reach the North Pole in 1909.
Designer from that period
Mariano Fortuny was born May 11, 1871, in Granada, Spain and died May 3, 1949, in Venice, Italy. Fortuny was a painter, inventor, photographer, and fashion designer best known for his dress and textile designs.
About 1907 Fortuny’s dress designs, many of them inspired by ancient Greek garments such as the tunic and the peplos, became extremely popular among the wealthy. The silk dresses that he designed were perhaps most remarkable for their subtle coloring and for the freedom of movement that they allowed. Some of these dresses were simple in execution, while others of similar design had hundreds of tiny pleats that ran from neck to foot. Fortuny’s clients were dancers, actresses, and well-to-do women. He was never part of the popular fashion market.
Fortuny created silhouettes with waistlines at the natural waist or slightly higher, utilizing kimono silk jacket which is one the key elements of the era.
How to style those key elements today
Designer Valentino did a s/s 2016 collection inspired by Mariano Fortuny. The silhouettes are different they are more loose, more deep v collars, and the designer used see through fabrics. The collection is more modern and bold. There is a lot of mixtures of velvet, pleats, paint, and prints. Additionally, there is heavy embroidery, making the embroider look 3D with the movement of the garment. The idea is still the same when it comes to styling.

canva.com
Terra is for a woman who has a deep connection with nature but she is also highly involved in digital footprint. She is always “wrapped” in quilted nylon, parkas and puffers. For prints and patterns you will see ditsy flowers and structured nature that merge with the digital side.
Terra also embodies a women who shop local, believes in quality over quantity and zero waste packaging. She is eco chic.

Flat Layouts
Since my inspiration for this was Terra Fall/Winter 2018, for my first look I decided to go with the colors Quite Gray, Tofu (type of cream color), and Quetzal Green. The accessories color stories are Valiant Poppy and different shades of blue like: Nebulas Blue, Sargasso Sea.
Pantone.com
The fabrics used for my first look are faux fur for the coat, pleather for the belt, and the sweater dress is made of nylon and cotton. Most of the accessories are made from plastic and vinyl.
Some of the trendy items for Terra Fall/Winter 2018 are the sweater dress, corset belt, faux coat to give more texture to the look and the “statement” earrings, in which I incorporated on my first look. The main reason why I decided to do Terra Fall/ Winter 2018 was thanks to a local designer Tereneh Mosley, who gave me this beautiful bracelet cuff, made by the Maasai Women, for helping her with the Idia’ Dega events.
Tereneh Mosley founded this organization Idia’ Dega, which is a global-eco designs collaboration with the Orgesailie Maasai Women Artisans of Kenya (OMWA). The Terra women are pro-earth, and the enjoy supporting local shops, I felt like these women will wear accessories from Idia’Dega, which are also made from recycled materials. Tereneh also gave me the idea of using newspaper packaging, into a bag for the upcoming photo shoot, which is also perfect because it is zero waste packaging and that is one of the elements for this trend.
Mostly everything is from T.j.Maxx, except for the bracelet cuff, which is from Idia’Dega. An estimated price for the whole outfit will be $62.00 plus $80.00 for the bracelet cuff, which the money goes to the Maasai Women. Yes, it is pricey, but the terra women believe in “quality over quantity,” meaning that she prefers spending more for the long-term and the money is going to a good cause.
The End. Hope you guys this trend reasearch post!!
