I tend to picture Veld as having one hell of a temper, though it’s something he learned to control by the time he was the director. It turned from something flashfire and hot to this cold, seething thing that he usually has to swallow down because he can’t afford to fly off the handle.

That said, if you really, truly piss him off, in any part of the timeline, you better hope one of the other Turks gets to you first. Because he’s also damn creative, and if he’s angry enough to want revenge? There’s a hell of a lot worse things than death, and he’s about to educate you in them.

Sometimes Veld drinks alone. He’s no alcoholic; he can handle his booze. He wouldn’t have succeeded as a Turk for all those years if he couldn’t drink most of the room under the table. But these solitary drinks, they’re special.

He pours a glass of whiskey, the good kind, the single malt stuff from the grasslands. The kind that gets five star reviews and costs a month’s pay for your average city worker. He’s earned it.

He lifts the glass in honor of the woman who died twice - his daughter, Felicia aka Elfe.

Shot by Tseng, same as her father. Brought back to life by the grace of materia, killed by the long-term effects of a summon. May she rest untroubled.

Someday it’ll be him, done in by time. A second person with two deaths to his name.

And someday, some year, there’ll be a third, a man who died once at the hands of a lunatic, and will again, if he’s lucky, if he gets what he most desires: The sleep of peace, and if the gods are kind, forgiveness for his sins.

Veld figures you pay for your sins in this life, not the next. Maybe that’s what’s kept Vincent here so long. Maybe that’s why Elfe died so young. Maybe, in the gods’ reckoning, it’s why Veld has to watch his best friend suffer the trio of violent entities that ride his soul, and why he has to see him possessed by entropy’s demonic herald.

Maybe it’s why Veld had to watch his daughter slowly fade away, taken by an inevitability that no amount of love or money could stop.

The gods are cruel, but just. If they exist.

So raise a glass to Vincent Valentine, host of Chaos; Veld Dragoon, Chief Emeritus of the Turks; and Elfe, Commander of Avalanche. The triad of sinners, haunted in both life and death.

He drinks deep with a silent Here’s to us. The shadows bear witness, keep him company. The gods keep a respectful distance.

It’s a long night.

They were related now, after a fashion. “Director,” he said, voice carefully neutral. “Lovely day for a wedding.”

This was originally gonna be part of a sorta tutorial showing the differences between Art Nouveau vs Art Deco as portrayed (dumbed down) in modern fanart, but I gave up when I remembered I’m really bad at Art Deco. Which gave me more freedom in shading and coloring techniques on the “Art Nouveau” example, which is this. Veld survived because hot dads always survive.

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
