✨Book Cover Reveal of #NotYourChinaDoll - a new biography about #AnnaMayWong by Katie Gee Salisbury (@kayteesal)✨

I am excited to reveal the cover of an upcoming biography about Anna May Wong written by Katie Gee Salisbury. Some of you may simply know her by her Instagram username @kayteesal.

A backstory of how I connected with Katie: In November 2021, I stumbled upon Katie’s Twitter page while trying to figure out if an Asian woman at a Hollywood party was indeed Anna May Wong. It wasn’t. As I read her Half Caste Woman newsletter blog feverishly, I found out it was Mrs. Quon Tai Lachman. I reached out to her personally. We corresponded & connected over our love for Anna May Wong before meeting in-person in August 2022 - when I shared part of my AMW collection & notes with her. I guess we are kindred spirits in a way. Both in our mid-late 30s, we can trace our ancestry to Toisan, and share a love for film history & Anna May Wong. In December 2022, Katie asked me if I would read an early draft of Not Your China Doll. I jumped at the chance. I read the draft of her book in less than span of 1 week and was completely engrossed in the immersive world of Anna May Wong. Katie interweaves the worlds of AMW so beautifully with words and imagery of life - with its foibles. It’s a wonderful true telling of her life’s story, and debunks many of the myths about AMW. It’s well researched & she received input from people in the AMW community. I can’t wait to read this book in its final version—I only read one draft. I hope you will join me… won’t you? 😉

𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐧𝐠 & 𝐑𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐨 𝐢𝐧 “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞” 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐱 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 ⠀ Admittedly, this tv episode & “The Deadly Tattoo” episode that AMW co-stars in are perhaps some of hardest tv episodes to find - in general, the majority of Climax tv episodes are rare. I still haven’t found them after much searching. The only clues I’ve found are the photos & captions of said episodes (slide ➡️). Personally, it sounds like a very intriguing episode to watch. I also found an interview where Rita talks about “The Chinese Game” episode. (DM if you want the link!) ⠀ Anyways, I’ve always wondered how AMW was on set of tv shows - to see the perspectives of co-stars- like perspective of @theritamoreno. But I’m not sure if they interacted much or if they shared any scenes together. 🤔I know Rita from Singin’ in the Rain, West Side Story… In other words, Rita is a legend! 🕊️Changing the narrative about Anna May Wong’s death🕊️ Much of what I read about AMW’s death is that she died tragically—often her death is seen in a negative light. That was alone. That her career went downhill. Something along those lines. I challenge that narrative. Growing up as a daughter of a funeral counselor, I never saw death as the bad, big ending to life. I know it’s seen as taboo in many cultures around the world. I see that her death brought meaning to her life. Yes, it would been awesome if she had lived to star in Flower Drum Song. Given her alcoholism & health struggles, I doubt if she had lived longer she would been without those struggles & health issues. In retrospect, her career outlasted many of those of the silent era, spanning from silents to talkies to stage to cabaret to radio to television. It is impressive! To accomplish that in 56 years is amazing! Also, she wasn’t alone. She had a close knit family & friends group. She was particularly close to her youngest brother Richard—pictured in these photos. On the anniversary of her death, I want to acknowledge her legacy & accomplishments.🙌🏼 ⠀ If you’re familiar with sex positivity, I’m death positive. Anna May Wong would be so proud of the 11 nominations Everything Everywhere All at Once has received. 🥹👏🏼 In her AMW’s lifetime, she was named “The World's Best-Dressed Woman” by Mayfair Mannequin Society of New York—the award she’s holding in her hands in this photo. I could muse about the acting awards AMW could have been nominated for, which roles & movies, but no awards need to validate her acting prowess & skills—for she was an excellent & emotive actress. I watched EEAAO this past week. I laughed & cried at how relatable it was—still is.
