NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: KACERE by JOHN KACERE (1996) • The ridiculously scarce Japanese-only publication on the work of John Kacere. • Published by Images of Erotic Art in Tokyo in 1996, this fantastic monograph reproduces his famous photorealist paintings in full colour across roughly 140 landscape pages, broken into chapters "Lace", "See Through", "Delta", "Cotton", "Hip", and "Garter". Includes quotes from John Kacere in English, plus short texts and biography in Japanese, portrait of the artist in his studio, and more. • John C. Kacere (23 June 1920 – 5 August 1999) was an American artist. Originally an abstract expressionist, Kacere adopted a photorealist style in 1963. Nearly all of his iconic paintings depict the midsection of the female body. Although he rejected the term, Kacere is considered one of the original photorealists. Kacere's first painting in this style was in 1969, involving the midsection of a woman dressed in lingerie. It was over three times life size. Kacere continued this type of painting throughout the rest of his career, making it an icon of the photorealism movement. Though figurative paintings, Kacere's works have often been considered still lifes or even landscapes. • One copy only, available via our website and in the bookshop. • #worldfoodbooks #johnkacere #kacere (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

OPEN TODAY 11-6 PM. NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: JOHN DIVOLA - VANDALISM (2018) • Between 1974 and 1975, the American photographer John Divola – then in his mid twenties and without a studio of his own – travelled across Los Angeles in search of dilapidated properties in which to make photographs. Armed with a camera, spray paint, string and cardboard, the artist would produce one of his most significant photographic projects entitled Vandalism. In this visceral, black and white series of images Divola vandalised vacant homes with abstract constellations of graffiti-like marks, ritualistic configurations of string hooked to pins, and torn arrangements of card, before cataloguing the results. The project vigorously merged the documentary approach of forensic photography with staged interventions echoing performance, sculpture and installation art. Serving as a conceptual sabotaging of the delineations between such documentary and artistic practices, at a time when the ‘truthfulness’ of photography was being called into question, Vandalism helped to establish Divola’s highly distinctive photographic language. • Available via our website and in the bookshop today. • #worldfoodbooks #johndivola #mackbooks #vandalism (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

OPEN TIL 5 PM. BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: CAROLEE'S by CAROLEE SCHNEEMANN (2016) • 'Caroleeʼs' is the second issue of The Magazine of the Artistʼs Institute. The first was 'Pierre's' by Pierre Huyghe. • Dedicated to Carolee Schneemann, it features a previously unpublished image archive from Schneemannʼs studio that documents half a century of morphological connections between her work and other visual material, including art, advertising, and popular culture. • A new long-form profile of Schneemann by writer Maggie Nelson accompanies this project and considers the artistʼs relationship to the history of her reception and Schneemannʼs significant influence on subsequent generations of feminists. • Available via our website and in the bookshop. • #worldfoodbooks #caroleeschneemann #theartistsinstitute #waltherkönig (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

OPEN TODAY TIL 5 PM. NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: CAROLEE SCHNEEMANN - UNCOLLECTED TEXTS (2018) • Uncollected Texts draws together a number of Carolee Schneemann’s earliest writings – many exceedingly rare and several that are published here for the first time – ranging from letters to the editor, dream journals, and film criticism, to satirical poems, detailed discussions of her art, and pointed feminist critiques. Edited by Branden W. Joseph, the book includes 30 texts by Carolee Schneemann written between 1956 and 1981, as well as an introduction by Joseph. • First published in short-run magazines like Caterpillar, Film Culture, The Fox, Manipulations, and Matter; academic journals such as Performing Arts Journal; and mainstream publications including The New York Times and The Village Voice, the writings gathered in this volume shed light on some of Schneemann’s most important artistic achievements. Schneemann writes about her most famous “kinetic theatre” piece, Meat Joy; anti-Vietnam War works such as Snows, Viet-Flakes, and Divisions and Rubble; the multimedia performance Up to and Including Her Limits; and the double-screen film Kitch’s Last Meal. Frequently referring to one another, the assembled writings produce a densely interwoven tapestry of cross-references that provide unique insights into Schneemann’s artistic development while also foregrounding the artist’s uniquely poetic style. • Available via our website and in the bookshop. • #worldfoodbooks #caroleeschneemann #primaryinformation #brandenwjoseph (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)
