S04E09, I Can’t Be The One To Stop You S04E16, I Wouldn’t Be Standing Here If It Weren’t For You

The latest episode of Legacies where Lizzie revealed her crush on (excuse me 'idolizing') Hope ever since she was a kid, reframes the scene on 1x12 where Josie revealed her own crush on Hope.

(The poor twins. They both had a crush on Hope and didn't how to handle their crush and hilariously their response was: Get Out of Our School).

Rewatching the scene again from Lizzie's point of view, knowing what we know now... and in context. Oh boy. It hits different.

It's interesting to watch the slow realization on Lizzie's face as Josie said: "I didn't just lie. I started the fire. Lizzie had made some remark... about me being obsessed with you."

Because you can see Lizzie remembers what happened and with context to what we know about Lizzie's feelings for Hope after the events of 4x16 -- I've realized that Lizzie was projecting her own feelings for Hope onto Josie.

Maybe because Lizzie was jealous and irate that Josie was also looking at Hope because she didn't want to share Hope with Josie at the same time, Lizzie has so many conflicting feelings for Hope. Deep admiration and resentment against how the way Hope took attention away from their father.

(Just a note, I don't dislike Josie -- I like both twins and they're both flawed. Josie was a parentified child, meaning she took over care of Lizzie when she shouldn't have. It just spoke to, unfortunately, Caroline and Alaric's poor parenting).

Josie reveals her childhood crush on Hope.

Hope looks surprised, meanwhile, and at that time... I was a little confused why Lizzie looked teary-eyed.

And again, in context after 4x16, I realized that it was because with Josie finally revealed her crush out loud. But also because I think she felt conflicting emotions about the lost time she could have had with Hope and the realization that now Josie had said out loud what Lizzie always suspected (and feared), Josie also had a crush on Hope.

Lizzie pushes the issue more because she wanted answers and Josie finally revealed the reason why she lied -- because she thought Lizzie would make it into a contest and all the people Josie ever liked ended up gravitating towards Lizzie.

IMO this is the moment Lizzie decided not to pursue anything with Hope beyond friendship. I don't think she would even ever reveal her own crush/feelings for Hope.

Despite what Penelope believed, Lizzie does love Josie.

(Also 'going' for the same person could just be attributed to how Josie and Lizzie have similar tastes).

Hope is flattered and doesn't notice Lizzie's quiet turmoil as Hope said, quietly to Jodie, "You had a crush on me."

Josie replies, in a matter a fact way, that makes me think that for Josie, she's over her crush on Hope. "Of course I did. Who wouldn't?"

Again, Lizzie's face -- with the knowledge we have now from season 4, that Lizzie's always had a crush on Hope.

It seals Lizzie's decision to never bring up her feelings or crush on Hope because she's seeing Hope and Josie make heart eyes at each other during this scene.

Years later, in season 4, Lizzie becomes vulnerable enough to reveal she's always had a crush on Hope.

Also, both versions of Hope, especially the supposedly emotionless, dark version of Hope felt flattered.

Lizzie's past the point of not revealing her crush anymore, so many things have happened.

Lizzie has told No Humanity Hope she loves her twice already and full-on Humanity Hope that she had a crush on Hope.

It's not that she went back on her decision but so many things have happened between Hope and Lizzie. They've had death between them, done to each other, to other people. They both have blood on their hands.

They've gone so far from the time they fought a mummy together with Josie.

And now here they are, until the bitter end.

Josie: Hey Lizzie, what color are Hope's eyes?

Lizzie: A refreshing sapphire look of intoxicating wonder when the sun hits it just right on a cool summer evening.

Josie:

Lizzie: I said blue!

Anyone finds it's interesting that as soon as Jo left Lizzie just won't shut up about loving Hope no matter what she's done. The girl finally feels free to get this off her chest

On rewatch of Legacies 4x16 there was a moment when Hope is alone in the werewolf transition cell (holding area/cell) after Lizzie stormed off when Hope's Humanity-less side almost won.

I didn't realize how close it was until I did a rewatch -- also Layne Morgan, one of the writers of the episode mentioned Danielle Rose Russell nailed the moment where she was looking at Lizzie like a lifeline.

Dark Side!Hope is the devil is real!Hope's ear, whispering about all the things she's afraid of. Real!Hope tries to ignore that part of herself, determined to power through.

As with most things this episode, powering through isn't enough. As strong as Hope is, she still needs people to help her.

Dark side!Hope knew she hit a sore spot, Hope stops drawing on the floor.

She can't help but listen now as Dark side!Hope zeroed in on her fear: "If you make one mistake-- they're all gonna die. Just like Landon. Just like every other person that you've ever lost."

And then the hook to Dark Side!Hope's offer, is something so tempting that Hope closes her eyes and almost, almost switches off her emotions.

And then out of the blue just as Hope was about to surrender to the seductive voice in her ear. (The same voice, by the way, Hope used when she dared Lizzie to kill her way back in 4x09. "Do it.").

(You can see Hope in the first image, eyes closed preparing to turn off the switch, she looks so small in that cell alone).

Hope hears Lizzie's voice.

The relief on Hope's face after Lizzie offered an olive branch and even more when Lizzie said: "I might know how to help."

Lizzie doesn't know how close it was to losing her Hope again.

Circling back to what Layne Morgan tweeted about this scene and how Hope looked at Lizzie like she was her lifeline, as the last water in the desert.
