Our awesome residents and fellows taught us how to use the laparoscopic instruments today! They also showed us how to throw stitches laparoscopically and do intracorporeal and extracorporeal knot tying (inside the body with instruments vs outside the body with a knot pusher). I thought the med students did a pretty good job! But then one of the residents or fellows would jump in and they dexterity and finesse was so much more elegant and efficient. It's crazy how much you learn in 2 years. This picture was taken during my 3rd year of medical school on my surgery rotation. You can see my bad posture, the inappropriate  instrument holding technique and what you can't see- the struggle behind trying to tie the perfect suture. 🤷‍♀️ ... Now, on my last week of surgery, I feel so much more comfortable in the OR, actually operating the camera without getting everyone dizzy and suturing both quickly and effectively. ... Residency is all about learning as much as you can and working on becoming a better doctor each day. I'm a pgy1 resident going into ophthalmology. I get told all the time "I don't know how you do it!" To be honest, I'm not sure either. Being a mom, wife, business owner and a DOCTOR all at once is HARD! Despite the ups and downs, those grueling 28 hour shifts and other stresses we face going through medical training, it is not impossible to do and have it all. I run on Starbucks, wine, and Amazon prime. - Disclaimer: Caffeinate safely, folks. I certainly do not endorse or recommend the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, excessive caffeine intake, or energy additives. BUT this is what works for me so that I can stay awake for 24+ hours to provide care for my patients. Is it healthy? Absolutely not. And I certainly do not consume this on a daily basis, nor do I recommend this to my own patients. Unfortunately, the demands of residency make it so that we sometimes sacrifice our own health for the health of our patients (this is a system that needs to change, but I'll spare you all my rant 😆) I am definitely a proponent for living a healthy lifestyle, but when I'm on the job my patients become my first priority.
