Missed in the first reading of Dragon Haven

I like to think of Dragon Keeper and Dragon Haven as one book, as that’s how RH originally intended it to be published. That in mind, here’s my reactions to the first half of the Rainwilds Chroncles series, and the character arcs that were clearly intended to begin and end in one chunk:

Sedric and Alize: the story of two friends being romantically and sexually abused by the same man, able to handle the truth of facing themselves and the secrets that they discover and ultimately grow through the changes in their friendships. Both also are able to choose to leave their abusive relationship with Hest behind. Arc tied up neatly, with the only questions remaining being how the discovery of Kelsingra with affect both of them.

Thymara: awakened to possibility of being able to have a sexual relationship with anyone, and digs her heels in over her own choices.

Greft: hello Greft. goodbye Greft. This is the one series where RH really doubles down on killing all the assholes and letting all the good guys live, and I love it to death. It’s hard to feel sympathy for this dick, especially with the hardcore manipulation of Thymara that he attempts, but at the same time, he’s a victim of his circumstances and his own stupidity. I do appreciate RH’s ability to help you truly understand why a character is a shitbag when she writes a shitbag character. Regal is still one of my favorite villains for that reason. Kennit I have a harder time with because of the combination of utter bewitchment he has on the reader constrasted with his rapitude.

Carson: “damnit, I just want to look after these people I care about, ok?”

Rapskal: Intended to be endearing… I started the Fitz and the Fool trilogy before I had read RWC (a mistake, I wish I’d read them in the order they’d been intended to be read) so I already knew how the Tats/Thymara/Rapskal triangle would resolve, and how Rapskal’s adult personality wasn’t evidenced in the first two books. And that he didn’t die in the flood. That made it hard to like him, because I knew what he was going to do. I think I would have found him annoying anyway, especially because the way he just moves in to Thymara’s life and stakes a claim on her without telling her in the beginning of the voyage.

Leftrin & Tarman: Is Leftrin a bad guy? Nah. Will the dragons eat Tarmin? Nah.

The dragons: start out as half-creatures, end up flying. Not bad! The speakers of many RotE secrets. Tarman too!

Detozi & Erek: two science nerds totally fall in love over long exchanges about animal husbandry and douchebag coworkers. So much love.

The Jerd/Bellen/Miscarriage: A realistic portrait about why not having sex was a necessary societal rule in the times before reliable birth control. Not everyone can afford a wizardwood charm, especially now that everyone knows what wizardwood is.

Speaking of wizardwood … will we see Kennit’s armband again in Assassin’s Fate? Still kind of interested in that guy and his motives, and the fact that he could clearly predict the future. 

ACTUALLY, speaking of Wizardwood, we know that it’s poisonous for humans to eat - but what if that’s the way that the Silver will kill humans - except for Six Duchies skill users? What if Fitz could totally eat Wizardwood and be all “that’s cool, I remember new things now”? I mean, I don’t know why he would ever try to eat a piece of wood, especially knowing that it’s made of skill-infused mud barfed up by a dragon … but Fitz has done some dumb shit.

I bet he’d eat wizard wood if he was told he strictly was not allowed to eat wizard wood.
