okay im back with more thoughts about the recently concluded tec arc (the asar desert), specifically #1803. i find it really pointed that the antagonist [dr. hurt <- cheesy on-the-nose name but his effectiveness as a plot device could not be understated] shows batman two different realities, which are both very common "alternate universe" categories that bruce would find himself in in other stories, and ram v uses this arc because of its dreamlike quality to deconstruct it.

on the one hand, there is the common gotham as utopia trope, melded with the common bad-faith critique of "why can't bruce come out into the open and use his wealth to turn stone into bread". we see batman as almost a godlike figure, gotham people dressed in masquerade attire and hailing him as their one true ruler. this illusion is interrupted by dissonance introduced by bruce, that forbids him to "win" in this way. to completely overstep his bounds and become Separate to the people of gotham destroys the reason why batman exists in the first place. at his very core bruce believes that gotham people have the ability and will to self-govern and choose justice + hope without paternalistic guidance, but just with a little aid to bring neglected injustices to the light. in this way, this illusion is disrupted.

the second illusion is the diametric opposite, where batman becomes this frank miller-esque android law enforcement figure (the "batman as the panopticon" trope). ram v, too unpacks this in a very interesting way. a man in the illusion stresses unity over fear, which echoes batman's philosophy [that he has had to learn with years of experience]. in the end, bruce allows himself to be shot by his robot/mechanized counterpart in order for the resistance to escape—perhaps on-the-nose emphasis of the pinnacle of fascism is when you cannot even recognize yourself, that you would gleefully persecute and kill with no self-reflection or remorse.

in situating bruce (our batman) in the different universes, ram v outlines and affirms bruce's philosophy by destabilizing and challenging pre-existing "easy fixes/endings". and i think that's really neat.

you call comics 'picture books' because you don't respect the medium in general and think they're just for kids. i call comics 'picture books' because the majority of the modern writing feels like it was designed in a lab to either piss me off or bore me to death meanwhile the artists are still putting their whole pussy into what they do. we are not the same

I do find the idea funny that Cass is actively nerfing herself by copying Batman's fighting style here and her powerup moment is in deciding "I can't do it Bruce, your style is just too weak and lame I'm sorry" and then swapping back to her own style and winning instantly.

Newest Detective Comics brings up a good point that Cass is far too obsessed with being like Bruce, she needs to be better than him if she ever really wants to be a true successor to him.

As always Shiva has to literally beat the shit out of her daughter for another life lesson to get through to her. 😭
