ADAPTIVE CLOTHING
Tumblr media
Scope reports that there are 13.9 million people in the UK who have a disability, which is a massive amount of people that are affected throughout their life.
I was scrolling through Twitter the other day, as I normally do when I’m bored when something got my attention: a viral tweet about the new Tommy Hilfiger Adaptive Collection.
Immediately I started some research on this and it didn’t take long for articles on it to come up, and they were recent too.
Tommy Hilfiger has released a collection of clothing which is designed specifically for people with disabilities, and the clothing solution covers plenty of different and unique issues. The clothing maintains its iconic blue, red and white colour design and nothing has changed apart from some features, some of them include: magnetic buttons, adjustable ‘pant hems’ to accommodate to people with prosthetic body parts, wrist loops to help lift trousers, one handed zips, velcro straps and plenty of others.
‘Inclusivity and the democratisation of fashion have always been at the core of my brand’s DNA. These collections continue to build on that vision, empowering differently abled adults to express themselves through fashion.’ - Tommy Hilfiger to CNN.

Just Say MoschiNO
“Just Say No” was a movement in America around the 1980′s started by First Lady (at the time) Nancy Reagan, as part of an effort to revisit the War on Drugs. The purpose of the movement was to encourage children at the time to ‘Just Say No’ to drugs to keep them safe. This movement received both support and criticism and it wasn’t entirely successful however it did spark a massive conversation starter and ‘Just Say No’ became a very popular slogan at the time. People who supported the campaign claimed that there were reduced rates of drug use and also lowered crime rate.
"Drug criminals are ingenious. They work every day to plot a new and better way to steal our children's lives, just as they've done by creating crack."
- Nancy Reagan

This campaign has never been far from controversy - even today. Moschino released their ‘Just Say MoschiNO’ collection for S/S17 and it didn’t last long on the shelves. The collection consisted of a range of products and garments such as shoulder bags in the form of pill tubs, sweatshirts covered in a pill print, even phone cases with the same pattern and much more. All of this was evidently inspired by prescription drugs which are commonly misused by addicts and while the pieces were unique, you can imagine Moschino received a lot of criticism after releasing the collection.

FLOWER POWER
‘Hippie’ is a popular subculture that once began as a youth movement between 1896 - 1908. This hippie movement was all about amateur folk music, hiking, camping and alternative fashion - much like the stereotypes we put onto hippies today. However, hippies didn’t come to the UK until the 1960’s and this presentation is an insight on what life was like as a hippie in Britain.
Tumblr media
‘Flower Power’ was a sub-movement that emerged in the late 1960s against the Vietnam War to try and turn war & violence into peace. In this time, hippies would dress in bright floral & spiral patterns and hand out flowers to the public.
While the flower power resistance wasn’t exactly successful - because the Vietnam War carried on for years after - it has become an iconic symbol of peace which is still known today.
So how does the flower power sub-movement influence fashion today?
Many designers use this era as inspiration for their garments whether it be in the silhouettes or the patterns. Moschino’s SS13 collection was evidently very influenced by flower power as the colours were extremely bold and vibrant and on top of that, there were actually (fake) flowers sewn onto the garment instead of being printed as a pattern which added an unusual texture like a 3D effect - which we can assume was done on purpose to reference the psychedelic side effects of taking popular drugs in those days.
