You're not alone in feeling like we scottish aren't represented in film enough. I am going to put up a post about it sometime, about my thoughts of similar subjects in film, like if The banshees of innerwhatever was set in Scotland, would it do as well, because I think it wouldn't. If the BBC version of the scottish book Mayflies was made into a film, would it do well? No, but if it was set in Ireland, it would probably do better. I know I'm coming across that I hate the Irish. I don't, but why do people prefer the Irish over the scottish over nearly everything, when we are quite similar? I will put it into s separate post, as I can go on forever about this.
watched the new trailer for poor things and i am so so so disappointed.
so listen, poor things is my favourite book. i love its weird metatextual-ness. i love the gothic horror of it all. i love that every single narrator in the book is unreliable and there is no truth. but most of all i love it because it is a portrait of scotland.
bella baxter is an allegory for scotland herself. the bella caledonia. she’s a character born of a national literary tradition and societal influence, a woman who spends the whole book growing and finding and fighting for her voice, fighting against restraint from men who would rather mould her into something in their likeness. she’s bella and victoria, baxter and mccandless. she’s wild and stern and carries multiple identities at war with one another. she has the scars to prove it. bella is a reflection of who we are as scots - contradictory and complex, patchworking our identities throughout our life. the one we have in our family homes and the one we adopt to survive the schooling that seeks to batter the scots out of us. the one we grow into that represses who we are and looks on it with disdain. speak proper. move to london. we disassociate from ourselves because to admit it happens would be a stinging humiliation that we have, in part, done this to ourselves. we are moulded but are equally self-made in our fragmented, revisionist, past-less identity.
do you know how rare that is? to see works reflecting on this sorry little country, and how we got here, with charm and care? where we are not the joke, or the classless, or the stupid.
i wanted that out of this silly movie. i wanted so badly to see that representation of scottish voices - of me - through poor things. but all it is is a brightly coloured american frankenstein rework that knocks the fucking life out the story.
alas. scottish stories will continue to be told, and scottish voices will continue to be wiped out or relegated to cheap entertainment. poor things indeed.

What has my life become when I'm reblogging fanfic at 12:31pm on a Thursday afternoon like a thirsty bitch? I shouldn't be thirsty, I have a boyfriend, but when Pedro Pascal is your thirst trap of choice, well, needs must.
18+ mdni
Older Joel Miller would be the type to hold you by the back of the neck and tilt your head down to make you watch while he fucked you.
A heavy hand keeps you trapped while fingers prod at the sensitive tendons under your skin, forcing you to watch every devastating thrust as he buries his cock between your soaked folds.
“Look how wet you’re gettin’.” He’d brazenly drawl while eyeing your messy thighs and the syrupy slick that stains a creamy ring around his girth. He’d grind your pelvis, torturing your clit with the damp, wiry hairs that litter the base of his cock. “Suckin’ me right in.”
He’d hook his free hand under your jaw, content with your submission when your eyes go glossy and dumb, and tip your ragdoll head until he’s penetrating your soul with a hooded, possessive stare.
“Got you right where I want you.” He’d mock as a dark smirk tugs at his lips. His ominous tone slithers around your heart, and it makes your cunt anxiously clench. “You’re gonna be achin’ for days.”

I HATED the first film, thought it was so pretentious with annoying, unnecessary shots. This film, while still being pretentious with unnecessary shots, was far better, with a soundtrack that was *chef finger kiss*. (My boyfriend taped both the films on the tivo box thing, so that's how I came across them.) And with you'll losing your shit over Saltburn and the vampire scene, this had one that took me by surprise with someone from stranger things (i can't be arsed looking it up, but its the guy who plays Mike's older brother) going down on Honor Swinton Byrne and kissing her, smearing their mouthes with her blood 🤮. Not shy in showing that. Also, Richard Ayoade, while still being Richard Ayoade, is great as the nasty director with an ego that was too big for the old aircraft hanger they were filming in.
Film after film: The Souvenir Part 2 (dir. Joanna Hogg, 2021)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This incredibly superior sequel to the gut-punching first "Souvenir" starts with the immediate aftermath of the latter's tragic ending, therefore becoming, especially in its first half, a study on dealing with grief. Gradually though, it turns its attention onto the protagonist's process of becoming a filmmaker, while she learns, hard-way, how to translate the story of her relationship onto film. Already a revelation in the previous film, Byrne has grown even more as an emotionally attentive actress, somehow mirroring plausibly the arch of her character. The supporting players are all great, particularly, to my surprise, Ayoade, who somehow transcends his well-established TV persona, creating a role of an incredibly frustrated artist, who is first incredibly annoying and then generates unexpected amounts of empathy. The film is at its most spectacular in the scenes from the film set, like the one where Byrne reacts to questions about her film protagonist's (and therefore her own) characterization, "implausible," as her lead actress frustratingly notes. It's my favorite film by Hogg.

Pedro boys facial hair matrix
Happy 2023 ❤️ Starting the year as I intend it to continue - filled with Pedro boys! This one has been in the works for ages - I’m a bit of a compulsive organizer, so this was naturally always going to be a project I would take on.
Paging sideburns anon 🪒 who’s been sending in great asks which I’ve tagged fuckyeahmensgrooming if you’re interested in more posts on this topic!

Commentary below the cut (for once):
Barely There
Dave York, Max Lord, Max Phillips, Marcus Pike
This used to be my least favourite Pedro boys look, but Dave York changed my mind. Because it's almost always moustached, there's something almost sensual about being able to see the bare skin above his lips and below the nose. Also, I'm not a Marcus P girl, but dang, he looks good with this look.
Stache Only
Jack Daniels, Javier Pena seasons one to three
This is my favourite Pedro boys look - the clean shaven jaw does things to me, especially with the fluffy sideburns. I know I cheated using Javi’s from all seasons, but this look is so iconically Javier, I guess that's why we don't see often. It's so intrinsically linked to this character.
Half Fuzz
Din Djarin, Pero Tovar, Frankie Morales, Ezra
Trimmed close to the skin and quite low on the jawline, this is the most understated look out of the categories in my opinion.
Fully Bearded
Dieter Bravo, The Thief, Javi Gutierrez, Joel Miller
We are definitely in Pedro's bearded era, with the upper line of the beard sitting higher on the cheek, and he wears it so well. Joel's beard with the grays in particular drives me wild.
Wrap Around
Commandante Veracruz, Oberyn Martell, Marcus Moreno, Pietro Alvarez
Definitely the most transformative look on Pedro since it’s not how he normally grows his facial hair, and personally it's not my favourite look. Having said that, I do think it's a dramatic variation to add to his portfolio of looks.
That was a fun round-up! Thoughts and discourse welcome as always. I also have a hair matrix in the pipeline, stay tuned!

This has been on my to-do list for ages and it’s taken even longer to make. I’m so happy with how it turned out! Which is your favourite colour on our Pedro boys? Any look you would've put in the matrix instead?

Red
Javier, Bro Pedro, Mr. Ben, Javi G, Mario
Three of the red looks came from SNL, and I'm not complaining. I am especially feral for Mr. Ben's red sweater look, he looks broad AF in it. Javier of course rocks several red shirts in the series, but this one with the arms crossed is iconic.
Yellow
Oberyn, Javi G, Javier, Frankie
Personally, yellow is probably my favourite colour on P. He just carries it so gorgeously - the marigold yellow on Javi G and Oberyn's sun robes are literally the golden standard.
Green
Javier, Dieter, Dave, Joel
We need more green in P's wardrobe! His emerald green velvet suit on Jimmy Fallon took my breath away, and I lament the fact that we don't see this colour often enough on him. I hope Joel's green plaid shirt is just the beginning.
Blue
Javi G, Jack, Dave, Mr. Ben, Marcus Moreno
Wardrobe loves putting this man in a blue office shirt. For something different, I adore Javi G's pale blue suit, and of course - Jack's iconic snowsuit.
Pink and purple
Meemaw, Javier, Frankie, Dieter
We 👏🏼 need 👏🏼 more of these two colours on P! While he’s worn quite a lot of pink IRL, his characters are a bit behind the curve. This man owns these colours, fingers crossed we’ll be blessed with more pinks and purples soon!
White
Charlie, Max Lord, Javier, Marcus Pike
I was a bit annoyed to find out that we didn't actually get a frontal shot of P in the white t-shirt in the Sia music video, so had to improvise with a two Javier looks (yet again). I do love this man in a white shirt without a tie almost as much as in a simple white t-shirt. And also hospital scrubs.
Gray
Veracruz, Din, Frankie, Marcus Pike, Zach
I know, I know, Din's beskar is silver but it had to go somewhere. I do love this man in a gray round neck t-shirt, we get him in three!
Black
Dave, Dio, Nico, Javier, Marcus Moreno
Ngl, Dave's assassin look sends me... this man looks so sleek in black. As bizarre as Nico is, the black turtleneck is such a classic and he looks so good in it!
P.S. We need more purple on P! There was unfortunately not enough material for one row and my OCD didn’t let me put in an incomplete row 🤷🏻‍♀️ Shoutout to Javier's violet shirt and Dieter's washed out purple tshirt!
