Olympia (2023), an AI-assisted recreation of Édouard Manet's masterpiece, by AIroticArt

Our very first post on Reddit was our recreation of Francisco de Goya's masterpiece La Maja Desnuda (1797-1800). That was eight months ago, when generative AI was still relatively new, and we were still beginners. We have now turned our attention to another nude masterpiece, Olympia (1863-65), 130.5x190cm, by Édouard Manet, to show what is possible today.

Olympia is a famous painting that was first exhibited at the 1865 Paris Salon. It depicts a nude woman, "Olympia," who is lying on a bed. A Black servant is bringing her flowers. As Wikipedia notes, "Olympia's confrontational gaze caused shock and astonishment when the painting was first exhibited because a number of details in the picture identified her as a prostitute."

The painting is on display at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, but will soon travel to the United States for the first time this coming fall (2023), on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York beginning September 24.

Of course, the painting was shocking when it was first exhibited. Her "confrontational gaze" and the details that identify her as a demi-mondaine (prostitute) seem to have caused a stir. The model for Olympia was Victorine Meurent, and for the servant, art model Laure. Conservatives predictably condemned the painting as "immoral" and "vulgar." But others commended Manet's honesty, such as Émile Zola, who said, "When our artists give us Venuses, they correct nature, they lie. Édouard Manet asked himself why lie, why not tell the truth; he introduced us to Olympia, this fille of our time, whom you meet on the sidewalks." A lot of discussion has been about the presence of the black maid in the painting, and what this says about race, slavery, feminism, the juxtaposition of black and white, etc.

To recreate this piece, we used many of the advancements in generative AI in the last eight months, including ControlNet, which allowed us to stay truer to the original painting than our recreation of La Maja Desnuda. Many details are still present in our recreation that are in the original painting, down to the smallest folds of the fabric (click the image to zoom in to the hi-res version). We also took some artistic liberties ourselves, such as adding pubic hair (why lie, why not tell the truth?), adding detail to the wallpaper, adding freckles, and many other minor details. Of course, our recreation is intended to be photorealistic, perhaps even giving us a glimpse of the scene that Manet was studying as he created his masterpiece in Paris.

We did leave one detail exactly as it is in Manet's original painting, with his original brushstrokes and all, and that is the slippers and toes. This is our homage to the great work of the master.

Using AI to bring Michelangelo's "David" to life

One of the most famous nude art pieces in the world is Michelangelo's masterpiece "David." Sculpted from marble between 1501-1504, it stands 17 feet tall. It is displayed today in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence, Italy.

It was originally commisioned to be placed along the roofline of the Florence Cathedral, but was placed instead in a pubic square just outside the seat of government in Florence, the Piazza della Signoria. Michelangelo was just 26 years old when he carved this work.

Wikipedia notes that it is a "Renaissance interpretation of a common ancient Greek theme of the standing heroic male nude," and has become "a symbol of strength and youthful beauty."

The proportions of the statue are unusual, the head and hands being extra large, and the genitals being small. There are various theories as to why this is, perhaps reflecting Renaissance conventions at the time. The statue has foreskin on David's penis, which is at odds with the Judaic practice of circumcision, but is again reflective of Renaissance art conventions. Interestingly, Wikipedia notes that legend claims that a "fig leaf was created in response to Queen Victoria's shock upon first viewing the statue's nudity, and was hung on the figure prior to royal visits, using two strategically placed hooks."

For our recreation, we used AI to help envision what David would look like as a real-life man. Using a combination of Stable Diffusion, Instruct-Pix2Pix, our own custom trained Penis Model v1.0 (inpainting), and other tools, we brought David to life. We made his head and hands a realistic size, as well as his penis, which is circumcised. Adding a hairy chest, pubic hair, hairy arms and legs, and facial hair, add to the realism. We think he is still a beauty.

Michelangelo is attributed as saying, "The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material." In a similar way, we might say, "The image is already complete within the latent space, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to engineer my prompts to extract it from the superfluous data."

This is our recreation of a famous painting, created entirely with artificial intelligence (AI) and Photoshop. The original is known as La Maja Desnuda (The Nude Maja), c. 1797-1800, 97cm × 190cm, which is a well-known oil painting on canvas by the great Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, now on display in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.

Wikipedia describes the original thus: "The painting is renowned for the straightforward and unashamed gaze of the model towards the viewer. It has also been cited as among the earliest Western artwork to depict a nude woman's pubic hair without obvious negative connotations (such as in images of prostitutes). With this work Goya not only upset the ecclesiastical authorities, but also titillated the public and extended the artistic horizon of the day. It has been in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1901."

Goya was summoned to a tribunal in 1808 as part of the Spanish Inquisition for having painted it, "on a charge of moral depravity." When he explained that he was following in the tradition of Titian and Velázquez, emulating a painting beloved by King Philip IV, he escaped prosecution.

The work is often displayed side by side with its counterpart, La Maja Vestida (The Clothed Maja), which Goya painted after the nude, between 1800-1807, but it is the original nude that brought controversy. A *maja* was a fashionable lower-class Madrid woman. Fashionable indeed! The subject of the painting is unclear, but may be the 13th Duchess of Alba, a Spanish aristocrat who Goya had an affair with, and is known to have painted twice, in 1795 and 1797. Those paintings bear resemblances. Goya must have been smitten with her, as he confessed in a personal letter about her, "Now I know how it feels to live." The subject may be a composite of several different people.

Goya pushed the boundaries of erotic art in this work, as it is one of the earliest in the West to depict a woman's pubic hair, a shocking evolution of art at the time. The subject has been updated to reflect a beautiful modern Spanish woman, still with an unashamed gaze.
