New Northern Lights Chapter: No Canadians, No Mounties, No Frasers
I posted a new chapter to my Due South fanfic, Northern Lights, today. Elizabeth Fraser's investigation gets off on the wrong foot when she interrupts Detective Jonathan Vecchio's interrogation.
The fic is now on both Wattpad and AO3.
(Chapter numbering differs because the Prologue is numbered as Chapter 1 on AO3)

A modest entry to Canadian Six Degrees
A very small part, basically a cameo.
In Barney's Version (2010), the main character is a television producer for a Mountie soap opera called O'Malley of the North.
Guess who plays the Mountie?

I love Paul's expressions in his second scene.
The film is tragi-comic, with a heartbreaking ending. It's streaming for free on CBC Gem, which you might need to be in Canada to access.

When life imitates Due South
A Toronto area rental car company has been accused of renting out stolen cars, changing their VINs, and then stealing the rental cars from renters’ driveways so they can collect the insurance proceeds.
The real question is: did a Mountie and a deaf wolf solve the case?

The Chicago Rules
While rewatching Due South, I’m writing a list of no-context “Chicago Rules” for my fanfic (see original post) - lessons that Fraser gives his daughter before she heads off to the big city, that reflect the lovable lunacy of the show. There will be (approximately) one Chicago Rule per episode. Here’s what I have so far:
Pilot: Armani is a brand of clothing
S1e1 - Free Willie: Bring a second hat, in case your first gets a hole in it.
S1e2 - Difenbaker’s Day Off: Wolves need licenses.
S1e3 - Manhunt: Informants are more cooperative when you ignore their firearms infractions.
S1e4 - They Eat Horses, Don’t They?: Always trust your nose.
S1e5 - Pizzas and Promises: When going undercover, it helps to bring a friend.
S1e6 - Chinatown: The city is noisy. Closets are quiet.
S1e7 & 8 - Chicago Holiday: Stay out of nightclubs.

An offline fan's history
I grew up in Canada, and my earliest memories of Due South are of watching it on the family TV with my mother. I was too young to understand the humour or most of the plot. I didn't know where Chicago was. But even then I knew the show was something special. Where else on TV could you see a man in a scarlet tunic running around the big city?
More than a decade later, I rewatched the entire series. Somehow, those episodes I watched over my mother's shoulder were burned into my memory. When I saw the sweat lodge in Fraser's apartment (Season 2, Episode 6), I realized "I've seen this episode before!" I wondered when Fraser was going to pull out the semaphore skills I remembered from my childhood (Season 2, Episode 17). And of course I remembered Diefenbaker.
I don't have much experience with fandom, especially online, or writing fan fiction. I mostly write original fantasy fiction. But when I realized that this year was the thirtieth anniversary of Due South, I wanted to join the fun with @ds30below. I'm excited to see the fandom's enthusiasm and creativity.

Northern Lights: A Due South Novel
About a month ago, before discovering @ds30below, I started writing Northern Lights, a serialized fan novel, published on Wattpad [edit: and now also on AO3]. Northern Lights continues the story in 2024 when, thirty years after Benton Fraser went to Chicago, his daughter follows in his footsteps.
Constable Elizabeth Fraser thought she'd spend her whole career policing the Canadian north. As a third generation Mountie, she knows how to track suspects through wilderness, handle a dog sled team, and press a scarlet tunic in a log cabin, but only knows American cities from family stories. Every day she strives to live up to her family legacy, but too often falls short of her own expectations. Yet when her best friend turns up dead, the trail leads to Chicago, where her old-fashioned skills are as welcome as a spring blizzard.
The Chicago detective assigned to the case, an old friend's estranged son, wants nothing to do with Frasers or Mounties. To solve the case, she'll have to mend a broken family, adapt to a strange new place, while bringing her loyal wolf-dog and a dose of Yukon politeness, duty, and honour to the big city.
You can read the story on Wattpad here. I've posted five chapters so far, with new chapters publishing weekly. [edit: and on A03 here]
Thank you @flownwrong for running this fest!
