oh god i’d heard about the “i won’t commission artists who undercharge for their art” post and now it’s making its rounds on my dash.

please understand that this concept does not actually help anyone. the sensible thing to do if an artist is undercharging is to tip them for what you think their work it worth, and be sure to let them know that. even if this doesn’t cause them to actually change their base prices, at least YOU’RE paying for what it’s worth, and THEY’RE getting business instead of nothing.

by essentially boycotting artists who are already unsure of the value of their own work (and are thus underpricing) you’re not sending any positive message. no one is going to up their commission prices when nobody is buying them. the only thing the artist gets out of it is that people don’t want to buy their art for some reason, and people who’s products aren’t selling aren’t going to say “oh i guess it was because i wasn’t charging enough, i’ll pump up the prices!”

if you want to support a commission artist, please do it by actually SUPPORTING THEM WITH COMMISSIONS rather than by choosing to take your business elsewhere because their prices were too low.

Remember 4 months ago when the CEO of this platform harassed and chased a trans woman off this website just for posting her transition timeline, then chased her to other social media platforms to continue harassing her, and threatened to call the FBI if she continued disputing the multiple dubious terminations of her blogs that did not violate tumblr's terms of service in any way? And despite tumblr staff insisting that the CEO was acting against their interests, the broad transmisogyny evident in the site's culture and moderation policy has still not been adequately addressed?

Doctor Who has dealt with racism in the past. Sometimes it’s Ten being oblivious to the racism toward Martha, sometimes it’s Twelve punching a racist in the face (iconic), and sometimes it’s whatever tf that Rosa Parks episode was. But every time, the racism has been very “tell don’t show,” and I think that’s why- for the most part- I’ve never really resonated with those moments when they happened.

But this episode portrayed racism that was both very obvious (at least to me) while also not hitting us over the head with the fact that the characters were in fact “doing a racism”. And the fact that this was an episode that took place in the future made it much more interesting as well. Because I could totally see our society progressing in this direction. It’s already happening to some extent. I watch year after year as more privileged families move to more affluent neighborhoods creating rich little bubbles of comfort and complacency, and sending their kids to private or expensive charter schools.

They would never describe themselves as racist- no! But then they explain wanting their kids to go to a “better school” and grow up in a “better neighborhood” and create a “safer environment,” while glaring their eyes if anyone who looked even a little bit different drove through playing their music even a little bit loud.

Racism presents itself today in a very “show don’t tell” way. You don’t have to hear anyone throwing around a slur to know. I think this week’s episode showed that.

seeing a lot of "the episode was about social media and suddenly out of nowhere turned into a commentary on racism" THE WHOLE EPISODE WAS ABOUT RACISM. THE WHOLE THING. IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT RACISM. from how white everyone was to lindy immediately blocking the doctor while only "sliding" ruby to them all being rich kids to lindy being appalled ruby and the doctor were in the same room to everyone saying they could "tame" the wild woods and "be pioneers". it was ALWAYS about racism.

yes the social media aspect ties into it bc racism is RAMPANT on social media. i specifically noticed how lindy made an effort to say how her clothes were sustainable and then turns around and commits microaggressions against the doctor. its the exact flavor of showboaty performative activism you see everywhere. just because you didnt notice it doesnt mean it wasnt there.
