no one is too young for a mobility aid
dont make young adults, kids, teens or anyone else feel like their age invalidates their disability and struggle.
they wouldnt have it if they didnt need it.
and you saying im “too young to have this cane” isnt going to make my illness better, or make me less reliant on it.
its just going to guilt me into going without my cane, because ill feel like im too young to need it.

Things no one warned me about using a cane for the first time:
1) You are most certainly going to end up tripping yourself with it.
Yes, it will be embarrassing. But also a little funny. Just pretend it didn’t happen, eventually it’s gonna happen less often.
2) if you carry a purse, carry it on the OPPOSITE side you use the cane on.
If you don’t your bag will end up thunking against the cane. It’s weird.
3) Speaking of carrying things; it might seem obvious but your carrying capacity is now reduced to one hand (and your mouth).
This is why I carry a purse.
4) You should keep hand sanitizer with you.
Bathrooms don’t usually have hand sanitizer in the stall, and to get OUt of the bathroom to wash your hands, you need to touch the cane (with possibly dirty hands!). Hand sanitizer your hands in the bathroom stall, then go and actually wash them in the sink so no one judges you.
5) Okay I was “prepared” for this one, but people WILL stare.
And touch. And ask really, really invasive questions. Such as “what’s wrong with you?” or “how’d you hurt yourself”. Some people might try to “help” by moving you/your cane.
Feel free to smack them. With the cane.
6) When you see other disabled folk in public you WILL have a moment™️
Bonus points if you’re the same age. Or have the same cane. It’s a spiritual connection.
And lastly, and the most annoying
7) CANES JUST WANNA FALL OVER!
no matter what you do, no matter how securely you think you’ve rested your cane, it WILL fall to the ground. Loudly. During the worst moments. Canes sense fear and they have zero mercy.

First Time Cane Users
I was talking with the very lovely guardian-system about canes and I wanted to compile what I said and some other stuff in a list!
What cane to buy:
Make sure it’s the proper height. My cane is adjustable and I have it on the heightest setting because of I’m 5’8”, 5’9” on a good day. If you’re shorter, you’ll need a shorter cane.
If your disability requires support from both sides of your body, maybe consider some form of forearm crutch. Personally, while both my legs are in pain, I normally take turns with what leg I lead with to give the other a break.
Have fun with the colors! I got a black one and I decorate it with duct tape depending on the season. Be proud of your cane and enjoy looking at it!
When walking with a cane:
Your arms are gonna hurt. The arm you use the cane with will be incredibly sore, especially in the elbow area. Your other arm will get tired from doing stuff like opening doors, holding things, and doing everything you can’t with your cane hand. I’m predominantly right handed, and while I’m able to write, brush my teeth, and open things with my left hand, it’s hard to get used to using my secondary hand because I use my right to use my cane.
Carrying things is gonna be a pain. You’ll struggle to lift things and walk, and back packs drag you down. If something can’t be held with one hand, don’t lift it. Ask for help.
Canes fall over. A lot. When you sit, put it in a place that you can reach it and it won’t fall over. This sometimes means putting it under your seat or on the floor.
Dealing with other people:
There will be people in your life who you didn’t realize are ableist who totally are. I have friends who don’t consider me disabled even with my cane and doctors saying I am. You’re gonna learn the hard way who supports you.
On a happier note, those who support you are wonderful! Hearing them politely offering their help or having them defend you from ableist jerks is a true sign of love.
As for the actual ableist, I know it’s hard to ignore them, but if you spend more time interacting with them, it’ll make you think more about it. remind them and remind yourself that yes, you’re disabled and you don’t owe them anything.
Internal ableism:
Walking with a cane comes with the horrible side effect of thinking you’re not “disabled enough”. This is where I’m here to tell you that everyone has a different way of dealing with a disability. Some disabled people use a wheelchair, and some don’t even need a mobility aid. Not being completely immobile doesn’t make you a faker or not disabled.
I personally practice paganism and all rituals that come along with that, so I find that doing spiritual work helps me feel more myself, but if you’re not pagan, try whatever helps you. Whether it’s your religion, spending time with friends, doing self care, reading, writing, drawing, WHATEVER, do it. You deserve it.
I hope this helps y’all! If you have any questions or just want to vent, send me a message!

Does anyone else have just a small identity crisis sometimes when it comes to whether you call yourself able/disabled/chronically ill? It's probably from being surrounded by a society of ableists, but a lot of times I feel weird calling myself chronically ill when I only have scoliosis and asthma. Like I think I don't "count" or something. Even though my scoliosis is severe and causes me constant pain, nerve damage, headaches, and limits me when I try to do certain physical activities. Somehow I still feel like I have imposter syndrome when it comes to my identity with my condition.

Jewish features are gorgeous im so tired of only seeing portrayals of my features in an ugly caricature way. Jewish features are beautiful and need more positivity surrounding them.

The times when you’re in the worst pain are often the same times when it’s hardest to think of what you should do to help yourself cope with it, so I made up this mind-map showing all the techniques I use to help myself when my pain is strongest
Your strategies probably vary, of course - if you’d like the SVG file so you can edit it to suit yourself, just drop me a message
[Full text version of mind map is available here: https://energysavingselfcare.tumblr.com/post/611361195502485504/pain-toolbox ]
