Okay so I know we’ve seen the whole Sophie sees Benedict as Benedict and how it’s the first time Benedict is seen by a person as himself and not as a bridgerton or a number…

But can we talk about how Benedict sees Sophie for the first time.

Almost every person in Sophie’s life sees her as a burden or a responsibility, I know Mrs Gibbons looks after her and loves her but that’s because she’s her employers “ward” so she probably still feels it’s her responsibility to look after her even once she’s a maid…

But Benedict…

Both as the maid and the lady in silver, Benedict sees her as more than what she sees herself…

He’s the FIRST person in Sophie’s memory that cares for her through choice. He chose to save her and take her back to his cottage and to find her somewhere but then grows to care for her.

To want her. Not just because of how she looks but cause of who she is. Over the few days she’s caring for him, he grows to care for her and his desire grows to a boiling point…

But he sees her, like she sees him…

He wants to make sure she’s okay. He feels a sense of responsibility after saving her but he doesn’t SEE her as his responsibility he’s chosen to make her his because of the mystical pull that he doesn’t understand.

It’s the first time in either of their lives that someone sees them for something more than who they were born to be.

More than a maid, a bastard and a complete outsider in society.

More than a second son, a spare, a bridgerton and a number…

They see the soul, they see their future and heart in the other person.

They see one another for who they are outside of the exception of society.

Sophie sees the artist, the kind heart and she’s the first person to not call him number 2…

Benedict sees something more than a maid, he doesn’t know what he’s seeing but he knows she’s not a maid. That there is more to Sophie than meets the eye and even when he learns she’s a bastard, after his initial rage of her keeping it from him… he realises that Sophie is his future, his heart, his soul… that’s all that matters…

They see one another and it’s the first time either of them feel seen… and for Sophie it’s the first time she experiences love and care and honestly…

This just reminds me why I love them so much… it’s not just one sided.

Sophie sees Benedict and much he sees her.

Soulmate shit right there…

The more I think about it, the more I think that Persuasion has my favorite premise of all of Jane Austen's novels

Anne Elliot as a character speaks to my soul. She feels tremendous guilt for a decision she made eight years ago. Her life is lonely, as she doesn't really have anyone she can truly confide in despite being surrounded by people. So she swallows her pain, the yearning she feels deep in her soul, and vows that if nothing else at least she'll be helpful.

And of course she is reunited with Frederick Wentworth (the one that got away) who seems to hate her now, and she just keeps going. She keeps being kind and supporting her loved ones while slowly carving out a life for herself. There's something about her classic heroism that just feels so attainable. I don't have Elizabeth Bennett's wit, or Jane Bennett's unwavering belief in the goodness of everyone, or even Elinor's constant composure. But I can be like Anne and just keep moving forward attempting to be helpful

Of course it all works out in the end, and Anne is finally surrounded by people who truly appreciate her, even if she had to wait an extra eight years. Others have observed the fairy tale quality of the ending, and perhaps that's why it speaks to me. The idea that if you just keep doing your best and being kind, you'll eventually find happiness
