doomscrolling is not activism
doomscrolling is not activism
doomscrolling is not activism
"don't look away" is a meaningless phrase. who are you benefiting by inundating yourself with misery porn?
DO something about things you care about. Go to a protest for something you believe in, if you can. Donate money to a cause if you have it to spare. Volunteer your time to help people if you have the energy. Write a letter to your political representatives if that's something you can do. These are meaningful ways to try to make change in the world.
And then? don't feel bad about insulating yourself from horrible news. Don't make yourself look at images that make you feel sick. Don't read endless things that depress you. Because frankly it gets harder to actually do the more you doomscroll. Reading constantly about things you can't change because they're happening at a systemic level or on the other side of the world is paralyzing. It makes you less able to help where you can.
I'm not saying be willfully ignorant. I'm not saying pretend horrible things aren't happening. I'm saying don't destroy your mental health going in-depth and cycling through horror after horror on your phone. I'm saying there is no virtue in making yourself experience other people's traumas because mere awareness is not activism. you inflicting suffering on yourself is not activism.
doomscrolling is literally sapping your energy and focus away from doing anything useful to help other people. you can burn yourself out without ever lifting a finger by exposing yourself to all the bad news in the world and who does that help? no one.

say what you want about bridgerton I know it's not a Good Show or whatever but nicola coughlan insisting on being 'as naked as possible' in this series as a 'fuck you' to everyone saying she's too fat to be a romantic lead and because 'when I'm 60 I wanna watch it and remember how fucking hot I was' is ICONIC BEHAVIOR

For the next week (5/15-5/22), all proceeds from sales of our audiobook will be donated to a campaign on Gaza Funds to help a family evacuate.
If you already have the audiobook or would prefer a donation of a different amount, consider donating directly to a gofundme linked on the site. These campaigns are fully vetted and will directly help families escape the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

My Merciful God! we can no more bear what is going on in our life:
My family (23persons) have to be evacuated for the fifth time, last one from Rafah.
We don’t know where to go, the bombing is in everywhere, the life became miserable for them.
Please help and participate to rescue them from death.

My one major struggle when reading Russian literature is that I get so stressed out whenever a character makes stupid decisions involving money, like please, Rostov, don’t gamble away forty-three thousand roubles, my blood pressure is rising here

So there is this thing that the two Villeneuve Dune movies do together that I cannot stop thinking about, where they will present something (often, a weapon) in a context the first time around where it looks a certain way (often, very sexy and cool). And then they will present it again in a way that doesn't exactly negate your reading of the original context but makes you recoil in horror from the new context.
Paul and Jessica using the Voice to escape from their Harkonnen captors? Very sexy and cool. Look at them working together, mother and son, a couple of space witch badasses.
Jessica using the Voice on Chani to force her to participate in reviving Paul after he drinks the Water of Life? Horrifying. Saying you will be part of this myth that has been created to serve political ends that have nothing to do with your liberation, and if you don't do it voluntarily to save the person you love then I will make you do it.
Chani and Paul working together to take down the ornithopter gunship using those little shoulder-fired rockets? Very sexy and cool, we love guerrilla warfare against an occupying army. (I'm not being facetious here, this sequence is extremely satisfying to watch.)
The much later image of Paul silhouetted against the blast from the missiles from his family's private nuclear arsenal blowing up the shield wall? Nightmarish.
The way the climactic battle to retake the palace at Arrakeen extends into the night so that it begins to look very very much like the initial Harkonnen attack on the same place? I'm sure this is intentional; the whole third act is about taking a giant sledgehammer to the idea that the Atreides are the better or more civilized imperialists.
Perhaps my favorite example of this is the Atreides signet ring. When Paul first puts it on in the first movie, it's a symbol of him accepting that Leto is dead. It's a melancholy moment, but it's also a sign of Paul accepting the responsibility of his birthright as the new Duke.
Early in the second movie, when he is trying to be equal to the Fremen, he takes the ring off. And you just know that when he decides to put it back on again, that will be the sign that everything's about to go to shit. And when it happens it's a very similar moment--it is Paul accepting his birthright, just a different kind. But the accompanying feeling is oh no.

abstract and modern art haters are sooo snobby like klein literally Created an entirely new pigment and then painted a canvas in a way where the brush strokes wouldn't be visible. the insinuation that people with no skill could reproduce that is so annoying because unless you are skilled at color mixing and painting you definitely couldn’t lmao

I'm pretty sure someone else said it but you really did have to be there when Yuri on Ice aired in 2016. Tumblr was going nuts for this show. I'm pretty sure we broke Tumblr and Crunchyroll from the sheer force of fans trying to see and talk about the finale.
Not to mention that it was 2016, and canon queer characters were incredibly few and far between. It was a recipe for a massive fandom.
(Yeah, there were people who insisted up and down that Yuri and Victor never canonically kissed on the ice because they didn't make on screen lip contact, which was incredibly stupid logic. There was definite homophobia going on regarding if it was Canon Queer or queerbaiting/'fujoshi bait'. But it was so important for people who, perhaps, never thought they'd get anything close to canon queer characters, or at least not in a show like Yuri on Ice.)
Anyway, RIP Ice Adolescence. We'll always hold this series in our hearts.

"Go to hell" is basic. "Hope your favourite anime movie sequel gets cancelled after seven years in production AND getting an animated teaser." is smart. It's possible. It's terrifying. It's happened.

So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????
I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.
Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?

i definitely feel like it’s underdiscussed that like. jaime and cersei’s incestuous relationship isn’t like an outlier or bizarre within their family but instead a culmination in a way of the lurking menace of incest and sexual violence that is basically omnipresent within their immediate family… tywin and joanna were cousins who grew up together in the same household (and were allegedly happy, but that’s still incest obviously), tywin’s sexualized humiliation of his father’s mistress, the brothel tunnels, sleeping with shae because she was tyrion’s, the whole tysha incident involving rape and incest by proxy of a thirteen year old tyrion (though people rarely in general bring up this clear source of sexual trauma for tyrion, which is odd to me because it’s first established in book one and is incredibly influential to his whole life). tywin as a perpetrator of sexual violence is obvious within the text but underdiscussed
and like the way that cersei harmed infant tyrion’s genitals specifically when she was a kid herself, and the way he thinks of her in a sexually violent way… it’s like. these siblings clearly grew up in an environment where sex and sexuality were entwined with family, with cruelty, with punishment. the lion’s jaws were already around them. JC aren’t incest twins tm in a vacuum but are instead a product of this environment, as is tyrion

Guys, go read this new "RonCon is going to become Cersei's Hand" theory. It's the best new ASOIAF theory in years, and I'm actually completely sold on it.
