Women brewers from Tijuana and San Diego came together to uncover "TAP" of a craft beer as part of the celebrations of the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States. Tom Reott, the Consulate General of the United States in Tijuana (far right) joined the bi-national group ”Dos California Brewsters" on Saturday, March 25, 2023 in unveiling the exclusively produced beer by the women in Ludica Cerveceria. The profits will go to a scholarship fund for biochemical engineering women from the Technological Institute of Tijuana interested in the production of craft beer. U.S. Congressman Juan Vargas joined with other local community members, civic and elected leaders in demanding the immediate end to construction of two 30-foot-tall walls that will replace current fencing at the Friendship Park area diving Tijuana and San Diego on Friday, March 17, 2023. — There are currently two layers of 18-foot border barrier that enclose Friendship Park, with Border Patrol controlling the gates to the historic meeting place for families who can’t cross to see each other. Those gates have been closed for several years. The new construction plans, initiated by the Trump administration and continued under President Joe Biden, did not originally include gates. But activism spurred by the collective Friends of Friendship Park last summer caused Customs and Border Protection to pause the project for stakeholder meetings over the design. Since construction restarted, Friends of Friendship Park has continued to call out the administration, saying that the modifications are not enough to preserve the essence and intended message of the park. A new border fence construction has begun at the U.S.-Mexico border on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 that will replace existing fencing at the Friendship Park San Diego-Tijuana area, which for years the park has served as a meeting point between the two cities for those families unable to reunite due to their immigration status. — The border replacement project will cover several miles of fence that divides Mexico and California, which began under the Trump Administration. The construction is expected to last six months to completion. The fencing installed will be a 30-foot and 18-foot tall section barriers. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) the construction will not impact the Friendship Park meeting point—which has been closed for many years now due to the condition of the existing fencing. Immigration advocates worry that it only makes the area “less friendly” and can harm the environmental ecosystem that has been planted by binational garden organizations that have beautified and maintained the park area on both sides of the fencing. In recent months egg prices have gone up overall both in the U.S. and in Mexico due to inflation, supply chain issues and an outbreak of avian flu in the States, which has increased demand for the food staple across both nations. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced that any illegal smuggling of eggs and poultry through the border, which in Tijuana, Mexico is $3 dollars for a dozen (approximation in Mexican pesos) cheaper compared to $7 dollars in most places in San Diego, California, will result in a heavy penalty price of $10,000 dollars for crossing it and will be confiscated on the spot. Economists predicate that the price of eggs will level out sometime in March once supply reaches demand, though producers and distributors think it may take longer depending on how many hens can produce quantities of eggs and be shipped to grocery chains all over the country. — In the U.S. the average price in eggs has increased 161% in costs nationwide from just under $3.40 dollars to what it was a year ago, $1.30 dollars, according to the Department of Agriculture. The first childhood memories of Katya Echazarreta, who in 2022 became the first Mexican woman to travel to space, are from the city of Tijuana. This Tuesday, and already 27 years old, she can add another memory in this city: a mural that commemorates her historic achievement. “Tijuana has always been a very important part for me,” said Echazarreta. “My memory begins getting off the plane from the Tijuana international airport and arriving at that first house in (the neighborhood) El Mirador. So for me, my life really started here." The mural is part of a series of cultural activities to commemorate the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States. Around the end of October 2022, I had the chance to document the growing University of California, San Diego (UCSD) backed migrant community in Tijuana, Mexico and how a pastor's life's work has become a multi-million dollar, first-of-its-kind safe landing for people fleeing violence during their wait to seek asylum to the United States. A massive, already operational migrant community is being constructed in Tijuana, thanks to a pastor, his charitable work, and a groundbreaking partnership with UCSD’s Center on Global Justice. — Much more than a migrant shelter, UCSD-Alacrán Community Station (also informally referred to as UCSD-Embajadores) is the first project of its scope in Mexico, says Gustavo Banda-Aceves, pastor of Templo Embajadores de Jesus church and shelter in Tijuana. The upstart community, located in Alacrán Canyon near the Great Tenochtitlan sports complex, is one of four cross-border UCSD Community Stations, which operate as shelter communities, according to Teddy Cruz, UCSD Center on Global Justice Director of Urban Research and professor. “There is no project similar to this concept,” he says of its status in Mexico, adding that he’s not sure about the rest of the world, “but there should be, and if not, why not?” — To read the entire article and see more photos of this story you can go to @sandiegomag: https://bit.ly/3GPLky4 —thank you to the editors of SDM for publishing the work online. — #photojournalism #tijuanamexico #ucsd #migration #documentaryphotography #asylumseekers (at Tijuana, Baja California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnlNZ56rGIY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A year has passed since the murder of Mexican journalists Margarito Martínez and Lourdes Maldonado in Tijuana. In both cases there were arrests and sentences. However, those who ordered these crimes are still not punished. Today marked one year of the murder of Martínez, who covered the police and security beat for various local and international media outlets. On January 17, 2022, Martínez was shot and killed as he was leaving his house to go to work. Relatives of Martínez, including his widow, his daughter and brothers, as well as colleagues from the press gathered this Tuesday at the Libertad de Expresión Civic Square in Tijuana to honor his memory. Some migrants along the U.S-Mexico border in the Agape Mundial Tijuana shelter have gotten appointments through the new CBP One App that was introduced yesterday by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for those wishing to apply for asylum to the United States on Friday, January 13, 2023. Only six were able to obtain a lottery number and official appointment for their asylum claims, while others got put in the system and given a number but without a set appointment as of yet—though once registered in the app, applicants will be contacted via email for their exact date once an appointment is available to them. — The CBP One App has now become oversaturated by the amount of migrants applying, there will not be any appointments assigned for the rest of January and February. — 600 migrants use to be at the Agape shelter now only 80 migrants remain since the app was introduced, in addition to some of the migrants who were given beforehand humanitarian parole, an exception to the Title 42 policy, due to some migrants dire circumstances who seek asylum through different associations and immigration advocacy groups who add migrants on lists for consideration of passage to the U.S. Now with the App migrants can apply by themselves using their phone and be added to the system, at least that is the plan or idea to make the process run faster, smoother and orderly by the Biden Administration. Though the App has received mix reviews and criticism by some migrants and advocates, overall most migrants who did apply on the app have gotten into the system and have received a lottery number to wait their turn to seek asylum to enter the U.S. Photos for @sipausa — #usmexicoborder #asylumseekers #tijuanamexico #cbpone #photojournalism #fotoperiodismo (at USA-Mexico Border, Tijuana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnYSwlur-4m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TIJUANA, MEXICO - JANUARY 09: Migrants from Mexico, Venezuela and Central American countries stage a protest outside the United States Consulate in Tijuana, Mexico on Monday, January 9, 2023. They demanded that U.S. authorities legislate immigration reform and hear their asylum claims, as most are fleeing from violence. Some migrants were given an audience to discuss their asylum claims by U.S. consulate officials, as they were escorted by Tijuana municipal police in small groups (Carlos A. Moreno for @anadoluimages) — Recently the Biden administration announced a new immigration plan that would allow 30,000 migrants per month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to enter the country and be able to work legally for up to two years. In order to qualify, the migrants must apply from their home countries, pass a background check and prove they have a financial supporter in the U.S. The Biden administration’s latest immigration policy received mixed reactions from the president’s critics, his supporters, immigrant rights advocates and even some migrants. — #tijuanamexico #migration #asylumseekers #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #fotoperiodismo (at Zona Este, Tijuana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnN1w2VJFPr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The U.S. Supreme Court is keeping in place, for now, Title 42 — the pandemic policy that OK’d migrant expulsions. California has yet to figure out how to meet the needs of an influx of migrants when it does go away, especially given that the state is confronting a projected budget deficit of $24 billion for the next fiscal year. — The California Legislative Analyst’s Office recently said in its annual forecast that Governor Gavin Newsom and the Democratic Party-controlled Legislature are facing a $24 billion projected budget deficit for the next fiscal year. If the state enters a recession the outlook is even worse, with revenues predicted to fall short by $30 billion to $50 billion. The governor signed a record-breaking $308 billion budget in June. Advocates say that while migrants sometimes require services when they first enter the country, research shows they ultimately contribute to the larger economy. In California undocumented immigrants collectively pay $3.1 billion a year in state and local taxes, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. TIJUANA, MEXICO - DECEMBER 18: Migrants participate in church services for International Migrants Day in shelters and at the U.S.-Mexico border on Sunday, December 18, 2022, as they showed grief, solidarity and unity in their religious beliefs. Some of the migrants hoped and prayed for the lifting of the Title 42 border policy keeping most of them waiting for a chance to apply for asylum to enter the United States. (Carlos A.
