It was the portrait window in the back of the tomb that caught my attention from a few rows over. I could see that it was the portrait of a small child and that it was quite old and damaged, which certainly piqued my curiosity for a closer inspection. I was so preoccupied with trying to capture a photo of the portrait through the small openings of the decorative iron door that I never noticed the name until I heard my husband exclaim, “Maitrejean! It’s a family Maitrejean!” In all of our many cemetery explorations we have never found another Maitrejean family crypt or grave. We have no idea if my husband is related to this family, but we have decided to adopt them….little cousin Gabrielle, great-great grandma Marie Jeanne, great-great uncles: Freddy Teddy, Victoire Robert, Marie Etienne Frederic Alphonse,  great-great grandpa Claude….flowers and candles next time we visit.
