...why would I move on when I could fucking celebrate?
unavoidable that you will be the villain in someone else's story. You will be painted in an unfavorable light. You will be the irredeemable one. and all of this will happen despite how nice you might usually be or how kind or how respectful or how warm. and you will just have to move on.

Since it seems like it's established that immersive VR exists in Remnant, I really need Yang having a Tron-style lightbike fight.
And if Blake is riding behind her like Olivia Wilde, all the better.

This honestly tracks perfectly for what the show does.
Now, the million-lien question: are they going to do something similar with Summer as well? Particularly, was the story of Alyx in V9, the beloved character who was actually very fragile and did some awful things, foreshadowing?
It's a popular theory, at least on Tumblr thanks to @bestworstcase 's excellent analysis pieces, that Summer went rogue and teamed up with Salem for some *good* reason. What if... she's just kind of shitty? What if she's a hanger-on climber who latched onto Tai when she saw an opportunity, only to trade up to Salem at her first real chance?
Maybe Raven is the principled one who stays away to protect her loved ones from the truth about their 'Super Mom'?
Okay so this is actually part of a much longer (series of) post(s) detailing/speculating on what I'm calling 'Ruby's and Yang's Family Reckoning' in Volume 10 and beyond, but I thought it'd be fun to throw this up as it's own little thing for now:
I actually completely understand WHY some fans keep defending Tai as a 'good'/'not-actually-a-total-fuckup' parent.
Because the show/writers are actually pulling a long-game, subversive narrative rug-pull with Tai just like they did with Ozpin, Ironwood and Qrow.
Think about it; Tai is introduced early on in the story as the seemingly 'Good Dad'. And he certainly LOOKS that way on the surface, given his lack of typical 'shitty dad' traits he see so often in stories. He's even first mentioned alongside what SEEMS to be a typical 'Bad Mom' who left her kids in Raven.
Just like Ozpin, Qrow and Ironwood were introduced as similar 'good-guy' archetypes; the Wise Teacher, the Quirky Mentor and the Heroic Soldier.
All while planting NUMEROUS and evergrowing hints, clues and red flags in the margins, between the lines and just outside our audience field of view, all in preparation for when the story is ready to yank the proverbial rug out from under both the audience AND our heroines that the adults they've been trusting this whole time are actually MASSIVE screw-ups who have been making a mess of everything.
The hints to Ozpin's general shadiness, the clues to Qrow's self-destructive alcoholism and depression, the red-flags that Ironwood was actually on the fast-track to fascism, and all the indicators that Tai was actually a complete and total fuck-up of a dad.
The only difference with Tai is that the show hasn't decided to shine the light of narrative focus ON all of his numerous problems and fuckups and force our heroines to confront them like it already has with Ozpin and Qrow in Volume 6, and Ironwood in Volume 7.
At least, not YET.
And do you remember how we actually had plenty of people who MISSED all those hints, clues and red flags surrounding Ozpin, Qrow and Ironwood? Specifically people who were denying that those meant anything right up until the moment they DID mean something?
Yeah, I'm not actually surprised at all we're seeing the same thing with Taiyang.

Agreed 100%. It's ironic, too, that even in this consideration of how Yang's been abused, I feel like sparing a moment to acknowledge that Ruby wasn't a willing participant in this. It's all she's had modeled for her, and she's just now reaching the point where she can recognize it and be better.
It really does suck how poorly Yang is treated by her family. They all treat Ruby so preciously because she’s Summer’s daughter. Hell, even Raven seems to hold Ruby in a higher regard than her own daughter. It’s like her only purpose in everyone’s eyes is to be Ruby’s guardian.
Hell, as much as we all know Ruby loves Yang, she hadn’t even begun to notice Yang’s own struggles until this volume.
I’m so glad that Yang’s got Blake and Weiss to support her otherwise Yang would have zero self worth.
You're seeing the results of parentification. Yang is just expected to be solid, dependable and take care of her little sister. Her own grief and depression are things to be dismissed and called "moping".
It still infuriates me how what Yang went through isn't considered by most to be abuse. I don't care if Tai had good intentions, intentions are irrelevant when it comes to abuse, only the results. Qrow isn't much better but he seems to be improving. Raven...is a mess but I suppose we'll see when V10 drops.
I love the fact that Weiss really is Yang's best friend. We've seen multiple times that she gets what Yang has gone through and one of the reasons she's Beekeeper #1 is because she knows how good Blake is for Yang.
Weiss is so right too. Blake is so good for Yang, it's so lovely that Yang finally has someone dependable to lean on, who loves her completely and will always be there for her.

I know chibi isn't canon, but I think Tai's portrayal as a "cool" surfer stoner dad is pretty relevant here. Because yeah, he's tuned out of the world. Maybe that's just how he is, maybe it's a trauma response.
I think it's fitting that Tai and Sun both have that "beach bro" vibe because yeah, they're both kind-hearted but extremely dense and lacking in emotional intelligence.

The way the story seems to frame it, it definitely strongly points towards Tai probably being the least aware that there's any kind of significant dysfunction in his family outside of the obvious candidates, which tracks pretty consistently with his personality and his track record.
Like he's kind of similar to Sun in that regard, in that he can get that something is wrong if it's blatantly obvious, but he REALLY just doesn't notice more subtle problems.
He gets that Qrow has problems with drinking and being too loyal to a man he likely blames as being part of the reason his family has fallen apart. He gets that Raven has serious issues and is bad for abandoning his family. He gets that Summer seems to have abandoned his family as well, albeit seeing her somewhat more fondly due to it being during a mission.
But more subtle cues? Like how Summer might have been keeping secrets? That Raven might have left due to a combination of her own insecurities and her own deep disdain of Ozpin's deceit? That his daughters were keeping their own fears and pains hidden to help prop things up to keep things being "fine"?
It seems to have just flown over his head.
YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES.
The Sun comparison is apt. Neither are exactly emotionally deep and tend to be extremely oblivious unless, as you said, things are REALLY wrong.
He never saw the pain that Yang has held in and hidden behind jokes, or Ruby's feelings of inadequacy compared to her glorified mother.
It's not that Tai is a villain, he's just deeply UNAWARE of how bad things really are.
Which...I'm not sure is much of a defense.

Yeah, it really does add another layer of depth as to why Yang was with her Dad and Blake was with Sun for Volume 4; to really highlight just how similar (for better and worse) Sun and Tai were, and how much Yang and Blake needed each other, not just because they were separated, but because they were more able to at least make a genuine attempt to understand each other's more subtle problems.
Tai neglected his own family in favor of his own inner demons, much like how Sun neglected leading his own team in favor of the girl he only knew for a few months at most. Neither MEANT to make such a poor decision, and both of them DID contribute to trying to help their respective girl get back on their feet (Tai with fighting practice, Sun with providing Blake with companionship), but it's always with the caveat that they also are absolutely terrible at really helping get to the root of the actual problem, or how they end up hurting someone else in the process. Tai just doesn't get his daughter's dysfunctions at all, and Sun literally had to have it spelled out to him that Blake needed someone who was willing to listen, not constantly talk over her with his own assumptions.
10/10 no notes.
