Auchmithie is a very small village on the coast of Angus some three miles north east of Arbroath. Much of the village stands on a single street. In the late 1800s, Auchmithie was a thriving fishing harbour, with 40 boats and a population of some 400. It was also where the Arbroath Smokie was first produced. The village has Norse origins, suggesting that smokies have been made here for over a thousand years. But the development of Arbroath drew most of the fishing and smoking away from Auchmithie. The perspective is a little misleading - the houses are perched on the edge of high sandstone cliffs. Coastguards Cottage dates from the late 1700s; the vantage point helped the coastguard to spot smugglers. I liked the promise of the freshly tilled fertile soil, lit as the sun was setting. And the way the water neatly divides the earth and sky. . . . #angus #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #visualsofscotland #arbroath (at Auchmithie Bay)

Last time I posted the Pentland Hills, in autumn, they were purple. Today they are covered in snow, though it is rapidly melting in the city. The Pentlands span 20 miles (32 km) to the south-west of Edinburgh. There is evidence of prehistoric settlement in the area, and farming from the pre-Roman era by the local Celtic people. The hills are an enjoyable walk in the summer. In the foreground is Saltire Court on Castle Terrace, completed in 1991. The site had lain derelict for over 25 years, in hopes it would be home to an opera house. The winning design out of 22 proposals was by Campbell & Arnott, with 49% of the public vote. . . . . #snow #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #unveiledinburgh #architecture #polarized (at Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

Not a typical cityscape, but this is in London - a Spring morning in the Regent’s Park. An oasis in the city, at this time in the morning there were just a few cyclists, joggers and dog walkers. Behind the tree there are tennis courts. It is one of London’s eight Royal Parks and covers an area of 395 acres. The park is named after Prince Regent, known as the playboy prince, who later became King George IV (1762-1830). . . . . . #London #visitlondon #visitlondon #uk #britain #insta_england #ilovelondon #londonphotographer #londonview #londonlife #igerslondon #royalpark (at The Regent's Park and Primrose Hill)

Today this scene must have looked much as it did in the 19thC, as the commute to work was on foot -no buses, few cars. Kirkbrae house on Edinburgh’s Dean Bridge dates from 1680 and is 6 floors high, clinging to a precipice over the Dean Gorge. The road on the right was formerly the main North road into Edinburgh before the bridge opened in 1832. In Scottish baronial style, it has a half acre cliff top garden, flag turret, gun loops and battlements. Inside there are ornately carved fireplaces, a minstrels gallery, detailed plaster ceilings and wood wall panelling. . . . . . #snow #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #unveiledinburgh #architecture (at Dean Bridge)

My first castle post of 2018, and the first with snow. Fortunately the snow showers were brief and punctuated by strong sun. Another two days of this weather is promised. . . . . #snow #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #unveiledinburgh #canon77d #castle (at Edinburgh Castle)

Almost too dark for a photo, but I liked the pink glow of the water at sunset. The tide was almost fully in, and the temperature was near freezing. The name of Cramond on the Firth of Forth refers to the Roman fort that lay on the River Almond. But there is evidence of habitation dating to around 8500 BC, one of Scotland’s earliest settlements. The coastline reflects volcanic action and a raised beach as the ice left. More recently Cramond has featured in a number of novels, including Kidnapped and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. . . . . . #coast #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #unveiledinburgh #canon77d #sunset (at Cramond)

The Museum in the Mound opened 11 years ago in the former HQ of the Bank of Scotland. It was scheduled to close at the end of 2017 but has been granted a reprieve. The architect of the 1870 remodelling was David Bryce, who encased the building in a Roman Baroque façade. The site was a former rubbish dump and is steep. The golden statue atop the building is the goddess Victory, by John Rhind, but the Bank is remembered more for its last days than the previous 300 years. In a moment of hubris the statue was gilded in 1995 as part of Bank of Scotland's tercentenary celebrations. This is an uncommon view, as it is necessary to walk up to just below the Castle Esplanade. But the bright early afternoon sun picked out the Black Watch memorial statue, and Edinburgh always has enough wind for the flags. . . . . . . #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #unveiledinburgh #canon77d #architecture (at Museum on the Mound)

Today seemed like Spring in Edinburgh and for a change I thought I would look from the castle towards Princes Street. The gardens were still quite but the gardeners were very busy getting everything ready for the growing season. This was taken just below the Esplanade - my office is top floor near the left of the picture. . . . . . #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #unveiledinburgh #canon77d #polarize (at Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

Donaldson's School in Edinburgh was designed by William Henry Playfair in a Gothic style inspired Elizabethan manor houses and Tudor architecture. Queen Victoria opened the building in 1850 and it is now A-listed. It ceased to operate as a school in 2008 and the grounds to the rear of the building and the gatehouses are currently being developed as residential accommodation. ‘The Playfair Building will be a collection of apartments with panoramic views across Edinburgh and sweeping lawns leading to period gate lodges”. I hope the location is unspoiled as it is a landmark building in the west of Edinburgh. At night lighting washes the building in red, blue and green, but I thought the uncoloured light looked best. . . #architecture #gothic #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #victorian #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #scottishnationalgallery #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #canon77d #unveiledinburgh (at Donaldson's School For The Deaf)

The view at sunset from the Whitney Museum of American Art in the West Village/ Meatpacking District neighbourhoods of Lower Manhattan. This looks to Jersey City and Hoboken. There are observation decks on the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th floors, though they mainly face Manhattan. Extremely cold, so though this shot is not perfect, I did not want to hang around outside too long. . . . . #newyork #usa #skyscraper #manhattan #nyc #visitnewyork #visitusa #whitneymuseum (at Whitney Museum of American Art)

Minus 8 deg this morning (18F) but very clear warm light made the Empire State Building quite pink. The Art Deco skyscraper was completed in 1931 and is in midtown Manhattan. Including its antenna, the building stands a total of 1,454 feet (443.2 m) tall. Empire State is the nickname of New York - it’s the 5th-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States and the 28th-tallest in the world. . . . #newyork #usa #skyscraper #manhattan #nyc #visitnewyork #empirestatebuilding #visitusa (at Empire State Building)

Robert Burns is the centre of attention in January in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. This is a beautiful red sandstone building - Gothic revival but internally the finish is mainly arts and crafts. When it opened to the public in 1889 it was the world’s first purpose-built portrait gallery. Robert Rowand Anderson was the architect, and he also designed Mount Stuart House on the Isle of Bute, one of Scotland’s finest buildings. The frieze depicts famous Scots in history. Currently the BP Portrait Competition is being exhibited - well worth seeing, though from the mutterings of viewers not many agreed with the winning choice. . . . . . #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #robertburns #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #artsandcrafts #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #artgallery #scottishnationalgallery #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #iphone7 #unveiledinburgh (at Scottish National Portrait Gallery)

St Mary-le-Bow in Cheapside was rebuilt in 1680 by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of 1666. There has been a church in this site since Saxon times, and a medieval version of the church was destroyed by the London Tornado of 1091. Much of the current building was destroyed by a German bomb during the Blitz in 1941, but restored in 1960. A true cockney should be born within the sound of its bells, but the most famous one was not. #dickvandyke #London #visitlondon #visitlondon #uk #britain #insta_england #ilovelondon #londonphotographer #londonview #londonlife #igerslondon #Englishbaroque (at St Mary-le-Bow)

A chilly but very bright day in Edinburgh today, and usually there would be more birds on the sand when the tide is out. Cramond Island is just out of shot to the right, but the tidal Causeway runs across the photo. This was one hour after low tide - the island can be reached on foot 2 hours either side of low tide, but few takers today. Across the Firth of Forth is Fife. I can see from many of today’s posts that the combination of snow, sun and clear skies brought out the best in Edinburgh and its surroundings today. . . . . . . #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #playfair #neoclassical #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #artgallery #scottishnationalgallery #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #iphone7 #unveiledinburgh #fife (at Cramond Foreshore Promenade)

Edinburgh’s Belgrave Crescent is above the Dean Bridge and in an area of Victorian architecture and gardens. John Chesser was a 19thC Scottish architect described as "the prime exponent of terrace design at the time". Many of his works are now category A listed buildings, particularly in the West End of Edinburgh. The flats and townhouses in the street are much sought after. The sunny scene disguises how cold it was. . . . . #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #playfair #victorian #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #artgallery #scottishnationalgallery #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland #canon77d #unveiledinburgh (at Belgrave Crescent gardens)

For brief moments of the day it it possible to forget its winter in Edinburgh. This was Princes Street early afternoon as the low sun played with the neoclassical columns of the National Gallery of Scotland. It’s not normally this much fun for cyclists either. The Gallery was designed by William Henry Playfair and opened in 1859. It is the 10th most visited museum in the UK. . . . . . #thisisedinburgh #loves_edinburgh #edinburgh #igersedinburgh #edinphoto #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #beautifuledinburgh #instascotand #igerscots #igmasters #playfair #neoclassical #this_is_scotland #scotland_insta #discoveredinburgh #topedinburghphoto #loveedinburgh #artgallery #scottishnationalgallery #edinburgh_snapshots #edinburghhighlights #visualsofscotland (at National Galleries of Scotland)
