i have no idea if people are interested in this sort of thing but I thought I would compile some of the process work behind the comic i made for gloria scott :^3 you can see how things changed and i made decisions while I worked.

I draw all over the script. these are very rough drawings and are mostly instinctual visual inspiration - what I see most vividly in my head when i listen to or read the scene

shape and panel blocking. easiest to make composition changes at this stage. I'm checking the flow of the comic panels works

colour map (planning how the composition of colours is going to work) and character design (john and sherlock go through a number of visual changes so I wanted to roughly plan for that). you can see i changed my mind about what the post-space design was going to look like, the main thing was I knew i had to include some colour to show their dynamic had been impacted by the conversation

references - for specific poses that I was struggling with I took photos of myself. I also taped my phone to the ceiling at one point for a good top-down shot of me lying on my bed. it looked really stupid but I got a good drawing out of it

forgive the rb with commentary (i’ll yap all day in the tags) but i find it’s necessary, for this:

firstly, what an honor to be brought on this journey through your creation process holy SHIT. your vision has been executed so perfectly it’s making me cry at my desk, pal

your use of color is just breathtaking - the bleeding out into each other, the blue of john’s melancholy attempt at calm encircling sherlock’s wrist, the coral panic of sherlock’s breakdown spreading through john, the sudden drop of color when the conversation shifts back to a question posed to john.

the details throughout are SO GOOD, sherlock allowing john to see him as a teenager through the principal’s eyes so clearly demonstrating the vulnerability of that scene, the mirror image of them rubbing at scars from life-changing moments as they discuss lionel’s scar, the ending where they are still floating away in space but we see the characters themselves back to gray scale - together despite the distance. there is an intimate closeness to the last panel despite them not touching, possibly even more intimate than the panel with john holding sherlock from floating away bc now one isn’t above the other, they’re at each other’s height. and you’ve already heard me gush about the use of space to portray sherlock’s spiral & john’s attempt to fish him out of it. pat i literally CANNOT say enough

thank you so much for sharing & please continue to shout at me about your idea literally ANY time. this is gonna rotate in my mind for weeks. months maybe. possibly years.
