Guess what... After Dark continues after all, in the form of a sequel. I've been wanting to write more for so long but thought I might start a whole new part of the series. It feels good to be back. <33
Summary:
After everything that has happened, Revenant is still a part of your life. Now, you have the opportunity to make him an even bigger part. You apply for an internship at the Apex Games with the hope of advancing in engineering, but also perhaps to be more closely connected with the simulacrum. Will the secrecy continue, and are you ready to face the dangers that lie ahead?

Summary:
You have a handsome fiancé and wealthy parents, and on top of that, you're talented in everything you do. Your skills and beauty are known and admired wherever you go. However, your longing soul craves something more. You should be enjoying your current life, but you feel trapped. Especially when soon you'll have to stop performing and start the duties of a housewife.
Soon, however, your life takes a stark turn that leads you onto a path of danger. And one thing you never could have imagined happens — you fall in love with someone you really shouldn't.
Notes:
Before you read!!! As we all know, the lore can be really confusing and this fic doesn't strictly follow it. This is more of an AU story, I'd say. Basically: Richtofen is not Primis or Ultimis, he is just Richtofen: being the powerful evil scientist man in the 1940s, and also general and part of Group 935 and Illuminati and what not lol
I want this fic to be extra smutty and extra heartbreaking love story. So we'll skip stuff like timeline jumping and time traveling. I don't rule out the possibility of there being lore and zombies or whatever in the story, but we'll see. I want to focus on making it disgustingly romantic porn ahem...

You stood on the beach, the sea washing over your ankles. The past night had been... chaotic. The sea offered some solace, making your mind a bit more relaxed. Perhaps you even felt a little lighter. You were truly free from all that mess now.
You knew you had seen this beach once in a dream. That dream was about Alexander. Back when all of this had begun. You couldn't help falling in love, even though it all had a terrible ending. But everyone was right. Here, you shouldn't develop feelings, or at least let them get in your way. Now, there was nothing in your way. This week's games would be victorious; you could feel it.
Success loomed in the future, and you'd meet your own assistant very soon. You were so far ahead now that the number of games and practices was increasing. You might not have felt the need for your assistant yet, but perhaps your thoughts would be more focused on the game and improvement, and you might need some help. You would probably spend more time in your workroom now than in the Lounge, drunk, and then in the laboratory. You smirked to yourself. Those times were behind you. It was time to focus on what truly mattered.
You closed your eyes and wanted to dwell in the past one more time. But only in the good parts. The future would bring a lot of progress and victories, but your time here had already been full of good things. Friends and success. And Alexander... maybe he wasn't what you thought, but you hoped you hadn't imagined everything completely. Or even if you had, you wanted to hold onto the good he had brought. At first, he had been cold towards you and wanted you to leave him alone. That was the real him. His sudden warmth was just to spite Syndicate through you. Still, you wanted to believe there was something genuine in it.
*
Alexander Nox was busy in his laboratory as usual. He had succeeded in his plan once again. But only partially. Not everything had gone as he had planned.
At first, he had regarded you as just another new legend who didn't impress him. Soon he found out you were unusually skilled and smart for someone so young. Of course, you were beautiful in his eyes, no doubt about that. He just wasn't a very emotional man.
Then, you started appearing in front of him often, everywhere. In the gym, the elevator, the same team. Alexander couldn't figure out what fascinated him about you. He wanted to stay away from you because you were messing with his thoughts. He wanted to be harsh with you to deny the strange feelings within him.
Then came the opportunity to help you and be more involved with you. Why would he do that? Why would he take the chance to further confuse himself with your presence? Because he wanted to. He made the most of the opportunity, observed your actions, and offered opportunities to come to his laboratory and "steal" his important files.
He had some need to protect you. To observe you. And when the opportunity arose to be intimate with you, he took it. As a rational person, he found it difficult to understand his own feelings, but he enjoyed every moment. He enjoyed knowing that you would appear at his laboratory door.
But now it was over. He had completed his mission and helped you. But he didn't want to tell you that. It was easier to claim that he did it to spite Syndicate. It was easier to stay cold. He wouldn't need to protect you anymore, and it would all be over. Something inside him had altered. And you were the one who had changed him.
And he couldn't hate himself for it anymore. Was it his turn to come to your door
*
You sat on your bed, jotting down notes in your calendar. You were determined to take work seriously now and planned your week's schedule. Until you heard a knock on your door. You stared at the door in surprise. No one ever knocked on your door. Who could it be? You opened the door and couldn't believe your eyes. Alexander. He stood there, looking lost, and you just stared, unable to say a word. Your heart immediately started beating faster.
"Y-yes...?" you asked, but your voice broke.
"I am the one who is the fool, Y/N. I manage to observe everything... but myself. The biggest trap is always your own mind", you looked at him in confusion, and you both stayed silent for a moment. You really didn't know what he meant.
"I've developed feelings for you. I don't want you to think that I used you. I want you to be well. I don't usually care about people's hatred, but I hope you don't hate me."
You furrowed your brow and tilted your head to better understand. Was he serious? You observed his actions. You couldn't think of a reason why he would stand at your door lying about something like this.
"You used the word love", Alexander suddenly said, and you looked away, embarrassed. "I don't hope for your love, I hope... for forgiveness. But... it felt good to hear it. I don't deserve it", he stumbled.
"I shouldn't have said it. You were right; we shouldn't let such strong feelings get in the way here", you said softly. Suddenly, Alexander gently lifted your face with his hand.
"Don't apologize", he said, looking into your eyes. You both gazed at each other for a moment that felt like an eternity. "We're both fools", he continued and leaned down to kiss you.
You responded to the kiss passionately. A wave of pleasure swept over you. You pulled him inside your apartment, inhaling his scent. You kissed his lips and wrapped both your hands around his neck, touching his face first as if to make sure he was really there. He settled on your bed, and you straddled his lap.
"We should have just stayed away from each other as you suggested", you whispered.
"I strongly disagree", Alexander groaned and threw you onto your back on the bed. He leaned down to kiss your neck. "I said, you're mine."
"You already said that in my dream – a long time ago", you said between kisses. Alexander touched every part of your body to prove his point. Yes, you were his. "Maybe we need this."
"I do need it, to be able to focus on my work again, at least for a while", Alexander slipped his hand into your pants. You felt his fingers teasing your most intimate area, and you moaned in ecstasy. "What are we, Alex, colleagues? Rivals? ...Lovers?" you asked with a grin before a wave of pleasure washed over you again, and you could only moan in response.
"All of the above."
Every once in a while, something changes And she's changing me It's too late for me now, I am altered There is something beneath She's not acid nor alkaline Caught between black and white Not quite either day or night She's perfectly misaligned I'm caught up in her design And how it connects to mine I see in a different light The objects of my desire Ooh, let's talk about chemistry 'Cause I'm dying to melt through To the heart of her molecules Till the particles part like holy water If anything, she's an undiscovered element Either born in Hell or heaven-sent Either way, I'm into it.

Miasma Pt. 19 "The truth II"
Caustic x fem reader Words: 600 Warnings: </3 A/N: Second to last chapter... thank you all so much for reading my first fic! Previous chapter | Next chapter
Tumblr media
You sat in Alexander's familiar dimly lit laboratory. You weren't cold, but you trembled. He had noticed and, without a word, escorted you to his lab, where he motioned for you to sit down. Sipping water from a glass, you contemplated what to say.
"I'm so sorry", were the first words to escape your lips. "They threatened the lives of my friends and family if I didn't comply. I had no choice. Please forgive me." You gripped the glass in your hands, your lower lip quivering. You were on the verge of tears, and as a rational person, Alexander couldn't fathom such behavior, so he was ready to stop your tears.
"You don't need to apologize. Everything is okay", he comforted, not very convincingly. Tears had already begun to stream down your cheeks as you lifted your head to look at him incredulously. How could everything be okay?
"Why didn't you say you knew what I was doing the whole time? Why did you let me go through with it?" You wiped away your tears, feeling humiliated. All this time, you hadn't realized who you were truly dealing with.
"Isn't it obvious?" Alexander poured himself a cup of coffee. "You needed information to survive. I gave you material so they would remain content, and you wouldn't have to fear."
You looked at him in disbelief. Why would he do that? You had deceived him and taken advantage of his help, and he had been aiding you all along.
"So those files weren't real? You don't plan on destroying my hometown?" You had to make sure before celebrating the fact that your intuition about Alexander was correct.
"Listen, Y/N", Alexander said seriously. "I am uncertain about the motivations behind my desire to offer assistance. My objective was to help your progress as much as possible. However, it is imperative to acknowledge that I do not conform to the image you might have constructed of me. I am not a nice man. I enjoy many things, but death is what inspires me. If I may be honest, I find death fascinating. And I want results. That's why we must remain just colleagues. Because you wouldn't come near the monster that I really am", he continued.
"I had to be approachable to you. So you could get through this", he said. "As I said, I am uncertain about the motivations behind my actions. It is conceivable that my inclination to assist you may be attributed to your... relatively inexperienced status in this environment. However, my principal motivation was to convey to the Syndicate that I consistently maintain a one-step-ahead position."
You listened in astonishment. Your intuition had been wrong. The others had been right. Caustic was a man who would stop at nothing. He was so intelligent that he truly was one step ahead of everyone. He could manipulate you so skillfully that you wouldn't even realize it. Two thoughts dominated your mind: Alexander was using you primarily to taunt the syndicate, and his feelings were probably not genuine. If your legs weren't betraying you, you'd get up and leave even faster. You had confessed your love. You had fucking confessed your love.
"I'm a fool", you mumbled. It dawned on you. Why would Alexander see anything in you? He loved science. There must be some goodness in him because he felt the need to help you. But that was it.
"You are very capable", Alexander said. "But here, you must be cold. You cannot allow your emotions to impede your path to success or cloud your judgment", he stated coldly, making you feel even more embarrassed. If you had never experienced a broken heart before, you were feeling it now.
"Thanks for your assistance", you said coldly and got up, heading out of the laboratory. This would be the very last time you would ever do it. You had no reason to return.

Miasma Pt. 18 "The truth I"
Caustic x fem reader Words: ~800 Warnings: none A/N: there is not much left... :( Previous chapter | Next Chapter
Tumblr media
It was midnight, and you were wide awake in your bed. You weren't even a bit tired. Your mind was filled with a thousand thoughts, not to mention the upcoming games for the week, which were sure to be tough. You knew you should focus on them one hundred percent, but there was so much more on your mind. You had never really felt your heart break, or at least you weren't sure if that's what it was, but your chest really ached. Every thought of Alexander made your heart hurt, and breathing felt difficult.
You tried to think about how much you hated him, but you didn't hate him. Maybe you were naive, but you couldn't find any bad in him, no matter how hard you tried. You didn't think of yourself as someone who always saw the good in people; it was just different with him. Had love blinded you?
Yes, love.
Was it even love? You had never really been in love before, that was certain. Were you now? All this overthinking kept you awake. You closed your eyes and remembered what it felt like to kiss him. You sighed heavily and just wanted to burst out crying. You wanted to run to the laboratory and confess what you had done. You wanted to cry in his arms and shout:
"Please, tell me you're not evil, promise me you're not evil!"
You'd be completely out of your mind if you did that now.
So that's what you decided to do.
You trembled all over as you stood in the elevator, staring at your reflection. You had no idea what you could do. You couldn't say anything. You certainly couldn't confess.
But you needed him. His presence.
You almost stumbled over your own feet as you rushed toward the laboratory. You didn't get far when someone stood in front of you. Typical.
"Where are you going?" Doyle asked.
"Doyle, move!" you commanded as that familiar troublemaker blocked your path. You didn't have the time or energy for this now. Was he the only one who roamed the hallways at night – besides you, of course?
"Do you know what the name of our little operation means?" Doyle blocked your way again when you tried to pass by. You couldn't care less about playing guessing games with him right now.
"He is Miasma, he is poisonous and causes illness wherever he goes. And yet, you're running to him. What the hell is that about?" he remarked.
You didn't want to explain love or anything to this man, so you didn't answer. Could he just leave you alone?
"You wouldn't understand", you muttered.
"You're making a mistake, kid", Doyle grabbed you with both hands.
"Intelligence is a dying breed...", you heard Alexander's low voice just at the right moment. Doyle released his grip on you and turned around. You wanted to run to hug Alexander and melt into his embrace, but you didn't, of course.
"Playing the hero, aren't you?" Doyle laughed. You chuckled when you realized he felt threatened. No wonder, as Alexander was much bigger than him. "If you only knew the truth about this sweetheart of yours."
No. No, no, no. Of course, this creep would do this. Your hands started sweating.
Alexander just scoffed. He looked at you, as if waiting for you to make a move. You realized you had been standing there tensely the whole time.
"Did you know that once you let her wriggle into your lab and worse, into your heart, she's been feeding us information about you and your experiments all along?" Doyle declared with a smug grin. "Yes, we have precise information about all your experiments and what you intend to do. I guarantee you'll be held accountable for your actions!" Doyle proclaimed, pounding his fist in the air. Your face went pale, and you couldn't bring yourself to look at Alexander. You didn't want to see his expression.
"You made an attempt...", Alexander said after a moment of silence. "In reality, you achieved nothing. Every file in your possession proves nothing but your lack of intelligence and your inability to interpret them correctly", Alexander sighed. "This was a failure... for one of us."
"What the hell are you muttering about, you lunatic? You got caught! And it's all thanks to this whore!" You listened in disbelief to this conversation. What did Alexander mean?
"I don't concern myself with the ambitions of insects. If you thought I didn't know that you were trying to get information about my experiments, you're foolish. I'm always one step ahead. Always." Alexander took a step closer, causing Doyle to shake his head in disbelief and back away. "Know your place. I know mine."
Doyle disappeared around the corner faster than you could imagine. What a coward. And you couldn't believe you had been afraid of him. The hallway fell silent immediately. You didn't have time to process everything you had heard.
"So you... knew?"

Miasma Pt. 17 "Fallen for a monster"
Caustic x fem reader Words: ~1250 Warnings: alcohol Previous chapter | Next Chapter
Tumblr media
"Is this a joke? Are you messing with me?" you asked, your voice shaking. Your first thought was that Doyle wanted to fool around with you and had come up with this to confuse you. He grabbed your wrist and pulled you closer, looking straight into your eyes. You were startled by how serious he suddenly seemed.
"Why would I waste my time joking at your expense? I have more important things to do. You helped us significantly, and we don't need you anymore", he said.
You were so shocked by the information you had just heard that you didn't even have time to feel relieved when he said they no longer needed you.
"I feel like you've been playing with me a few times", you hissed in disbelief.
"Fine, I admit I have teased you earlier because I enjoy seeing you flustered. But if you doubt my words now, I can show you the original files you sent us!" Doyle whispered angrily. You shook your head. The main thing was that you were now free. You looked down at your feet for a moment before raising your gaze back to him.
"So, you're not threatening me anymore to harm my family or friends", you said, almost boiling with anger.
"I can't promise that, you know... I can leave your family and other friends alone, but as for your friend Alexander Nox, I can't make any guarantees", Doyle said, a familiar wicked grin spreading across his face. You were relieved that you didn't have to live in fear of the Syndicate anymore, but it still felt terrible and confusing. Should you now hate Alexander? He was the one who would destroy your whole family. Everything. He was the monster.
You nodded faintly and turned away.
"I'll miss our cooperation, Y/N", Doyle said behind your back.
I won't. You thought.
You walked slowly back to your friends. You didn't know how to act now. On the one hand, you were relieved that you no longer had to live in fear of what the Syndicate might do. But now you had to fear what Alexander might do. You took a deep breath. You also couldn't show your shock because Alexander might become suspicious.
You all hung out together again and watched in a daze as Octavio demonstrated his dance moves. You tried to distract yourself. You tried to convince yourself that you didn't have to do anything anymore. Everything was now in the hands of the Syndicate, and you could go on with your life. But how could you when Alexander turned out to be the monster who could destroy your family and friends, your home? You gripped an empty glass in your hands.
"Weren't you supposed to obtain a fresh beverage?" Alexander asked. Why was he talking to you like a normal person? Had he been a psychopath all this time, pretending to be nice to you? You tried to shake the thoughts from your head so that tears wouldn't well up in your eyes. You glanced at Alexander, and he probably noticed that something was wrong. You set the glass down on a nearby table.
"I don't feel like it anymore", you said and moved away from Alexander.
You don't have to worry. You're a legend, not a superhero. You can't save the world. You don't know anything about this, and you can't do anything about it! You screamed in your head. Useless.
"What's wrong, Y/N? You look pale!" You were jolted when Loba stood next to you and asked you a question.
"I'll tell you later. I just want to get my mind off things for now", you said and suddenly felt like having a new drink.
You downed several more drinks during the evening. As the night wore on, the lights became more colorful, and the music louder. The media had left, leaving only the legends behind. You felt drunk and danced for a long time, trying to distract yourself. Alexander hadn't bothered you for the rest of the evening... until now when you leaned against a wall to steady yourself.
"You seem... inebriated. Would it be advisable for you to retire for the night?" Alexander said firmly. He had been monitoring your behavior all evening. You knew it because he was staring at you openly again.
"Are you stalking me here? Giving me orders?" you blurted out. Alexander grabbed you, intending to take you to your apartment, whether you wanted to or not.
"I'm not ready yet; I'm still partying!" you exclaimed.
"You're acting childishly", Alexander muttered.
"It's not your job to watch and dictate what I am and what I do. You're just my colleague, you've said that yourself so many times!" you snapped and tried to push him away. In your drunken state, it didn't work very well.
"I can still express concern for you, regardless", Alexander replied and stepped back. He didn't want you to punch him when you were behaving unpredictably.
"Leave me alone! You're insane!" you shouted at him. "First you say one thing, and then the opposite! What am I to you?"
Alexander looked around to make sure no one overheard what you had just shouted.
"Calm down!" he commanded.
"I won't calm down! I don't understand what you want from me!" you accused him. This man was just a monster. He probably tried to win you over so he could take everything away from you and then rub it in your face. And you went and developed feelings for him.
"I don't understand why I fell in love with you!" you yelled so loudly that Loba, who had been standing nearby, dropped her jaw in shock. Alexander rubbed his temples in annoyance and didn't notice when you left in a hurry. Loba gave Alexander a murderous look and followed you.
"What the hell, Y/N, did I hear that right?" Loba asked, shocked.
"I'm drunk; I don't mean what I said. Forget it", you said and started laughing. You were definitely drunk. Why was this even remotely funny? The whole situation was absurd.
Loba helped you stay on your feet.
"Was this what you wanted to tell me?" she asked, now a little concerned. You nodded and promised to tell her everything if you made it to your apartment in one piece.
*
The morning dawned, and your head was pounding. Loba had stayed to sleep on your couch and brought you water and painkillers. You regretted everything about yesterday, every single moment. When Loba stared at you intensely enough, you began to tell her everything from the beginning. She tried to control her reactions because she knew how messed up you were. When you reached the part where you learned the truth about Alexander's actions, Loba sighed.
"This is why you shouldn't develop feelings for other legends here. We're all messed up, especially him..." Loba said, stroking your hand.
"Doesn't matter," you sighed. "It's over! I'm a hopeless idiot."
"It's over? Yesterday, you said you loved him or something like that", Loba reminded you, and you buried your face in the pillow.
"Kill me, please!" you groaned, and Loba chuckled gently. You were definitely regretting everything about yesterday.
"Don't ever let the Syndicate or anyone use you again. It won't lead to anything good!" Loba wanted to shake some sense into you. "Ignorance is bliss."
You nodded. All of this might have toughened your skin now and made you realize that this definitely wasn't a children's playground. Now, you could finally find peace and focus solely on improving yourself.
As soon as the hangover clears up, that is.

Miasma Pt. 16 "Grand Soirée"
Caustic x fem reader Words: ~1700 Warnings: none A/N: oops, looks like I wrote three chapters today?? Also, this fic isn't 100% lore-accurate as you probably can tell… hope you don't mind. I’m trying my best to follow it tho! I'm glad to see that people are reading this fic either here or on AO3. I'm not sure which one is the place to post nowadays, but I'll probably continue posting to both. I'd like to hear what you think so far? Thanks for reading this, it means a lot to me!!
Previous chapter | Next chapter
Tumblr media
You looked at yourself in the mirror. You hadn't seen yourself this polished in who knows how long. You were getting ready for the Grand Soirée with a small group of friends, and it was fun to see everyone dressed up so elegantly and impeccably groomed. The common rooms were buzzing with cheerful chatter.
The Grand Soirée was an annual event and certainly one of the highlights of life as a legend. With fabulous catering and guaranteed fun, what could possibly go wrong? You stood in front of the mirror and couldn't decide if you felt stunning or like a clown.
"Y/N, you look AMAZING!" Natalie clapped her hands while looking at you. Maybe you did.
"You look beautiful yourself!" you complimented her back. Everyone looked different than ever before. Your black evening gown sparkled and your dark makeup added a beautiful touch. Your hair was styled in classic, elegant curls. You were actually quite beautiful. You wondered how Alexander would look in his suit and quickly shook that thought away when you realized you were blushing.
"We look fabulous, darlings", Loba walked over to you, smiling.
"We should hurry, allons-y", Natalie announced to everyone.
"How do I look? Well, handsome, of course! Oh, I'm the star of the evening, take all the pictures you want", Elliott posed one more time in front of the mirror. You playfully pushed him away from the mirror.
"Alright, let's head to the venue", you urged. The venue was a place you had never been before, but you knew it would be magnificent, with its high ceilings, spacious terraces, large windows, and crystal chandeliers.
You mentally prepared yourself, gathering your composure. There was a lot to face tonight: the media, Alexander, people from the Syndicate. You knew that your family and friends outside of the games would be following the evening's events through the media.
Half an hour later, you got a taste of what life as a celebrity was really like. The red carpet seemed over-the-top, and the camera flashes almost blinded you, but you couldn't help but feel like a star. You had a few solo photos taken, and then a group picture with your friends. You posed confidently with a smile. As you arrived at the venue, you couldn't help but admire the grandeur of the hall and its decorations. You sat down at your assigned seats and began to enjoy the delicious food. You had never tasted such exquisite dishes.
"This is why we work and brawl in the games!" Walter exclaimed, almost devouring his food with both hands. You smiled blissfully, seeing how excited everyone was. You wondered how everything looked to outsiders, the glamour and glitz. You began to feel full and sipped on the expensive red wine. At this moment, you wholeheartedly agreed with Walter.
The rooftop terrace was not lacking in extravagance either. Bar counters and hot tubs were scattered everywhere. The atmospheric light installations added a festive touch to the whole setting. The music was playing softly, but you knew it would pick up as the night went on.
"Y/N Y/L/N! You are known in the game as Specter. You're one of the youngest legends and have been in the top ranks in the games a lot now. What do you have to say to your fans?" You were almost startled as a woman with a microphone and a man with a camera stood before you. You probably should have prepared for questions earlier. You stood there looking sophisticated with a wine glass in hand, smiling nicely. Your friends were probably cheering for you in front of the TV right now.
"I want to say, chase your dreams and work hard for them!" you responded with a cliché, and the duo moved on to harass others with their questions. You saw your chance and quickly moved a little further away. You leaned against the railing and took a sip from your wine glass. The view was breathtaking. The city looked massive, and all the other buildings seemed tiny. The billboards blinked in the evening's dim light, and the traffic down below appeared minimal.
You turned around and were taken aback when you saw Natalie talking to Alexander in the distance. They seemed to be having a good time, and you felt a little sad. Why couldn't you just go and chat with them? No, you couldn't act normal in his presence. Probably never again.
Alexander looked incredibly handsome in his suit. You wanted to burst. You wanted so badly to go and grab his arm and let everyone see—your friends, the media, everyone. But there was no chance.
"Oh, how sweet. Are you pining for him?" you heard a familiar, annoying voice from beside you.
"Doyle..." you spat his name contemptuously and rolled your eyes. He looked terribly official in his suit.
"Can't I come and chat with my favorite legend?" he said, leaning closer to you and clinking his glass against yours. You glared at him angrily.
"What? Can't I even admire my favorite legend?" he whispered in your ear, and you glared at him once again. Then he left to join his like-minded friends.
"That jerk", Loba walked over to you to check if you were okay.
"Ugh, he's just a loser, I'm not afraid of him", you waved your hand dismissively.
"Come on, let's stick together", Loba protectively took your arm and began to lead you towards the others. Yes, the others. You saw the whole group standing together in the distance, including Alexander. Natalie squealed when she saw you.
"I just praised Dr. Caustic about you. You look so beautiful, don't you think, Dr. Caustic?"
Well, this got awkward.
Alexander just grunted and turned away. You didn't expect any other reaction. You wondered what it looked like from afar when you and Doyle were talking.
"You and that Syndicate guy will probably be in the headlines tomorrow, the way you two were acting..." Anita pointed out. She looked like a bodyguard in her suit. You wished someone could have guarded your back tonight. Clearly, it was needed.
"That would be hell of a headline..." Kairi sighed and took a sip from her drink. "I need another one."
"Tell me about it", you huffed in response to both of her comments.
You noticed everyone around you gradually moving toward the bar counter. Soon, you found yourself standing alone with Alexander where you had been in a group just a while ago.
"Who was that bastard in the suit?" Alexander suddenly spoke.
"Aren't everyone like that here tonight?" you teased, and you could tell your joke didn't amuse him much at the moment. You couldn't exactly tell him that the guy was someone you were feeding information about his secret experiments to.
"I'll break his hands if he attempts physical contact with you again", Alexander growled, and you couldn't help but smile.
"Like any good colleague would?" you asked, feigning innocence.
"Of course", Alexander replied, adjusting his bowtie. You were relieved that your encounter wasn't awkward, and you could continue your conversation normally. You hoped for more, of course.
"Well, do you agree with Natalie?" you asked, and Alexander looked at you questioningly.
"Am I beautiful?" you flirted with a seductive look, just like any colleague would.
"You're very... alluring", you saw Alexander blush. "And that dress looks great on you."
"Thank you, but I think that you would look great on top of me", you whispered, and you saw Alexander almost choke on his drink. You struggled to stifle your laughter.
"If you weren't my colleague, I'd make you pay for that", Alexander muttered in a low voice, and your laughter abruptly stopped. Were you really going to continue this flirtation? Because if you did, you wouldn't be able to control yourself. You had to take a deep breath. This was truly torturing yourself. If you wanted to continue with your normal life, you couldn't do this to yourself.
"What did you have in mind? After all, I'm just your colleague", you asked innocently. You just had to continue...
"I'll come up with something. I find myself already too deep in this situation, and I'm uncertain whether it's possible to pull back", he said, giving you a meaningful look, and you felt like you were about to burst. You had just prepared yourself to detach from all of this, and now it continued. Not that you minded; it was better than anything. You knew you shouldn't allow yourself to...
fall in love.
But as Alexander had just pointed out, he was already deep into this, and so were you.
"I... I'll get a drink. Do you want anything?" you mumbled and started moving towards the bar counter. Alexander just shook his head and showed that he still had some of his drink left. You headed further away, and suddenly you saw Doyle signaling you over. His face looked serious. What the hell was going on?
You made your way over to him. It was best to obey. However, he couldn't do anything here with everyone watching.
"The files you sent have been examined now. Turns out, you were useful", Doyle said. It was a relief to hear. Maybe now he would be satisfied and leave you alone.
"You're probably interested in this...", Doyle pulled out his phone and began showing you something on the screen.
"It's no longer about Solace City; he's interested in another, more remote location where he's seriously planning gas attacks."
You furrowed your brows and leaned in to look at the screen.
"Does this look familiar? That is your hometown, right?" Doyle smirked as he saw the shock forming on your face.

Miasma Pt. 15 "Friends by your side"
Caustic x fem reader Words: 500 Warnings: none Previous chapter | Next Chapter
Tumblr media
You all sat at the common workspace together – you, Loba, Kairi, and Ajay. The room was large and warmly lit, much cozier than your own workspace.
You weren't angry at Loba even though she had told Kairi about your situation with the Syndicate. At first it made you sad that she broke her promise but then she reminded that you needed friends to be by your side.
You had agreed to meet together, and that was when Ajay happened to overhear Loba cursing at the Syndicate.
You weren't angry at Loba or her loud cursing; after all, now three of your friends knew about your situation and yes, you needed them to be there for you. You thanked yourself for deciding to share this information because felt much safer now.
"I want to destroy those bastards", Loba stood with her hands on her hips after you had gone through everything again, with Ajay listening intently, or well, almost everything. You left out the part about the sex with Alexander, for instance.
"I know that asshole. Doyle Dunn works for the Syndicate's Office of Public Relations. He goes by the name X because he wants to be so damn mysterious", Ajay spat out the words.
"I think we should leave it at this. I don't want a war. Maybe they won't bother me anymore", you muttered.
"I don't know, Y/N. We have to stay on guard all the time", Kairi reminded you. Maybe it was wishful thinking that you could ever be safe from bad people in this world.
"If he ever approaches ya again, tell us immediately!" Ajay commanded. You nodded in response.
"Tell me, did you manage to dig up the information they wanted about Caustic and what exactly they needed?" Kairi inquired. Right, you hadn't told anyone that yet, and you hoped no one would ask, but that hope was in vain.
"Syndicate needed information on Caustic's plans to release gas into Solace City to destroy it. I don't really know exactly what he's planning, but I gained access to almost all of his files and delivered them to the Syndicate."
"I knew there was something off about that man," Loba rolled her eyes. "He's a sick... mad scientist!"
You stared at your feet. You still didn't know the truth, and you didn't want to believe that Alexander could be so evil. To you, he was anything but that. Unfortunately, you couldn't prove it to anyone. No one would believe you. But what if they were right, and you were wrong? Whatever the case, you wouldn't have any dealings with him anymore.
"How did you get that information? Nox is a smart man; he's not easily fooled", Ajay sounded skeptical. Your cheeks started to flush.
"I'm good at deceiving", you confidently stated. The others believed it and didn't ask for more details. You continued to dig for information about the Syndicate together. However, one thought nagged at your mind above all else.
Tomorrow was the Grand Soirée – fancy suits, photographers and media, and you would see Alexander.
