Bramblestar had nothing to do with the choice to send Nightheart on that mission. He wasn't there when it was decided, and he wasn't there when he found out.
The scene in question happens in ASC Book 2: Sky, at the end of Chapter 5.
Nightheart sees the medcats come home after their meeting at the moonpool, and explicitly notes that Bramblestar does not come down to greet them.
Bramblestar stays up on the ledge. Squirrelflight comes down.
Nightheart is offended by this. He doesn't want "a chance to prove himself," he wants everything to be perfect immediately even though he's been recklessly endangering himself and getting himself hurt.
SQUIRRELFLIGHT MADE THE CHOICE TO SEND HIM. Nightheart KNOWS this.
She only says, "Bramblestar will agree." The only thing Bramblestar functionally does here is not say no. He had nothing to do with this.
And yet, the minute he vaguely hears that Bramblestar thinks well of him, that is when Nightheart doesn't resent "the chance to prove himself." He's suddenly giddy when the one person who has barely any involvement in his life might think highly of him.
I like this trait, about this character... as a flaw. Nightheart is easily manipulated by Bramblestar and used as a pawn, but resistant to everyone in his life who truly loves and cares for him and spends time with him. He flips IMMEDIATELY on the same situation when he thinks Bramble might approve of him for it.
It's an interesting trait. It's a fascinating, fatal flaw.
....but it doesn't seem to be on purpose. It's an accident. This writing team is so incompetent they can't keep major details of their story straight.
