thank you so much <3
Absolutely! Thank you so much for the request!
Starry Nights
Pairing: Coop x Remer
Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Fluff
Words: 1,162
The night was clear, and all the stars were out. Coop sat on the roof, elbow resting on one knee, nursing his beer between his legs. The cordless radio he brought with him sang softly as he stared out into the dimly lit street. The sun had gone down, and the moon hung over him like it judged his every move.
Almost a month had passed since winning the Denslow cup, and it had been about six hours since he’d broken up with Jenna. He should have been heartbroken. He should have been an inconsolable mess, sobbing on the floor. He'd been there too many times before, broken and used. Remer had always been the one to put him back together again. Remer would be here for this one too, ready to be the shoulder to cry on. He'd be wasting his time, there were no tears.
Coop guessed that out of all his breakups, this had been the most amicable. Jenna didn't hate him. Hell, she didn't even blame him. She saw through him. That was just the kind of woman she was.
"It isn't even your fault," she'd cried, and hugged him. "I'm sorry, Joe, but I need someone who can give me their whole heart. I can't chase someone who's already given theirs away."
He understood, of course he did. He didn't hold anything against Jenna, she'd set him free.
The song changed, and Coops heart shifted as "Hey" by The Pixies, played on the radio.
"Coop?"
Just like clockwork. His prince charming, here to pick the pieces up once again.
Coop kept his gaze forward as Remer climbed onto the roof. He felt Remer take a place next to him. "How many beers have you had?"
"It's ok, officer, this is only my second one."
That sassy remark must have concerned Remer because he gently put a hand on Coop's shoulder. "You, ok?"
Coop finally glanced over at his best friend. A faint smile played at his lips. "Am now."
Remer's face softened, and he rubbed circles into Coop's shoulder blade. His olive-green eyes never left Coop's for even a moment. His brow furrowed, maybe trying to assess the situation. He'd always been kind of thick headed. "I heard about Jenna."
Coop shrugged nonchalantly, taking a sip from his beer. "Yeah."
"I asked her why, but she said to come talk to you."
A silent pause fell over them. The only sound came from the radio.
"We're chained"
"We're chained"
He pointed his beer towards the radio, "Remember this song?"
"I think?"
"We ditched class and drove up to the lake in your Pontiac Fiero and got high on that shitty weed you bummed from your cousin. We were listening to the radio, this song, and you started crying, because you were scared about me going off to college and leaving you behind."
Remer frowned, as he tried to follow what Coop was getting at.
"You said you couldn't make it without me, and I told you I’d stay."
It seemed to click. His face reddened and he rubbed the back of his neck. "I remember."
"Do you remember what we did in your car afterwards?"
"Coop," he said, blushing harder.
Another pause, and then Coop asked, "Did you mean it, when you said you didn't care if I was dead?"
Remer's head snapped back to him; his eyes widened in horror. "What?"
"When you did the interview for Dateline? When I was in Calcutta for two weeks? You said, and I quote, " For all I care he could be hanging by his neck in his fucking closet." Did you mean that?"
"You know I didn't, dude. I was just pissed off. I fucking missed you."
"Why?"
Now, Remer was annoyed. "What do you mean why? Because you're my best friend and I didn't know where you were. Because I was lonely. Because I meant it when I said I can't make it without you, you dickhead."
Coop hummed and nodded his head.
"Why the fuck are we even talking about this? I already told you I was sorry."
He did, many times. Over the past three weeks, Coop noticed Remer rarely left his side. He'd offer to cook and help Coop with the chores. He even stopped being such a nuisance at practice.
With a sigh, Coop said, "Jenna broke up with me, because she could see we weren't going to work out."
"Why not?"
"… Because I'm in love with somebody else."
Remer's eyebrows shot up. "Really? Who is it?"
Coop gave him a rueful grin, "Someone I don't think I can have."
Remer's shoulders slumped, and he cocked his head to the side, confused. "Why not?"
"Because he's my best friend."
It didn't register right away. Remer said, "But I’m your best friend, Coop." He waited for a beat, and then it dawned in him. His eyes widened, "Oh."
"I'd stop it if I could. It's just, well, when we kissed at the game, it brought me back to the frontseat of your stupid Pontiac Fiero. And I realized that I can't make it without you either." His gaze dropped down to the half empty beer can, and his vision started to blur. He wiped at the tears forming in the corners of his eyes.
"Hey, Coop, hey." Remer pulled him into a hug. "It's ok."
Coop buried his face into Remer's shoulder, and sobbed, "I'm sorry, Doug."
"You don't have to be," he said, petting Coop's hair. "You don't have to be," he repeated, his voice dropping to a whisper. "You can have this."
Coop thought he heard Remer wrong. He lifted his head, tears staining his cheeks. He felt afraid to even ask. He glanced up at the man holding him. "Can I?"
"Fuck, Joe," Remer said, gently pushing the hair out of his eyes. "You don't even have to ask."
Coop brought his hand up and thumbed at the corner of Remer's mouth, before he leaned in and kissed him.
It was slow at first, but picked up when Remer pushed his tongue into Coops mouth. It was fast and messy like the last time. Remer pushed and pawed at him, while Coop was slow and pulled at him to get their bodies closer.
They kissed for what felt like ages. When they finally pulled away, Remer said, "You taste good."
Coop laughed and kissed him again.
Remer pulled back and rested his head against Coop's. "I'm glad you stayed."
"Me too."
"I love you, Joe Cooper."
Coop felt like his heart would burst, like he would fall apart at any moment. The good thing about it was Remer would be there to put him together again. He always would be. A slow smile spread across his face. "I love you too, Doug Remer." And he leaned in again.
