I was recently discussing this concept with a few writer friends. How you have to do you, write what you what you believe and stick to it no matter what the critics, your friends or your family say. @k_b_mallion puts it, you have to don your Author Armour. And this quote is not suggesting that you can't incorporate feedback, consider criticism or rewrite and rewrite. It simply means you had this idea for a reason, you know what you're doing. Comparing ourselves to others was a big theme in a lot of discussions with my writer friends this week. But it applies to everyone. Why do we feel this need to compare ourselves to others? "your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be." finishes the quote properly. Words like "very" and "really" should be used sparingly. They are really just clutter or filler and very rarely useful.  Or to put it properly -  They are clutter and rarely useful.  This is a nice little trick with the goal of making your writing pack more of a punch. If everything is very big and very small and very hot and very cold, the reader loses confidence in you as a writing and might disengage.  These little extraneous words don't need to be in your writing.  Ask  yourself if they serve a purpose. I was trying to explain this concept to a friend and he said, "Oh, it's like the Tribble's from Star Trek." For those of you that don't know, my friend was referring to the classic 1967 Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles". They are essentially small, furry, gentle, attractive, and slow-moving creatures but they rapidly reproduce - soon taking over the ship. In this instance my friend makes a good point. Creativity is endless, it expands, it reproduces and the more you use it the more you ...create. You are creative. Chances are you have an idea (or two or three) for a story. You have a plot, or a character in mind. Maybe it's a spin off of someone else's idea (aka Fan Fiction) but you are creating it. If I asked you to write a limerick right now about Star Trek or Tribbles or furry creatures, I bet you could do it. Never underestimate the power of the writing of Dr. Seuss. His words are fun. But as usual there's a powerful message to be found in them. And this message is about not drowning your reader in words. I'm a big fan of Charles Dickens, a writer who knew how to turn a phrase into a paragraph. The most well known example, the opening line to A Tale of Two Cities: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." In other words: Things were good and bad People were happy and sad There's a time and a place to be verbose. Different genres expect different levels of description. Different scenes need different levels of story-telling. You also have to decide your writing style.
