to jump on that maddie and eddie post - do you think eddie's time at dispatch has affected maddie's opinion of him? like do you think josh has complained to maddie about eddie? (i know there isn't any real animosity between josh and eddie but they weren't like... besties at dispatch)

Hi, anon! This is an interesting question.

Honestly, no, I don't really think it would have had much of an impact. During the time that Eddie was there, I don't think Josh had contact with Maddie, and even if he did have contact with her, I don't think Josh would have brought up any mild complaints he might have had about Eddie at that time. If it had been normal times for all of them, then I could have seen Josh complaining about Eddie a bit because Josh and Eddie did seem to annoy each other (although, really only the once. twice if you count Eddie's little bit of snark in "May Day"). But even then, I don't think a few months of mild complaints from Josh would have made much of a difference in Maddie's opinion of Eddie.

I mean, I do truly think Maddie is not Eddie's biggest fan and she could do without having to interact with him much, but I also think she does respect him a lot, and yeah, part of that is because she knows how much Eddie loves Buck and how much Buck loves Eddie, but I also think she recognizes that Eddie is a genuinely good person and a good father and a damn good firefighter, even if he gets on her nerves.

So even if Josh had gone to her directly with the complaint of Eddie taking over the call in 5x11, I actually think Maddie would have defended Eddie because he did what he had to in that instance with the expertise he had that no one else would have. He made a call and it was the right one. I think Maddie would have seen that, especially because Buck was on that truck. Had Eddie failed to step in, Buck may well not have made it out alive, and there's no universe where I think Maddie's opinion of Eddie could be colored by a minor petty rivalry between him and Josh when he stepped in and kept her brother safe when needed, just as he has so many times before.

So, yes, I think Eddie annoys the living hell out of her (much like Buck does sometimes), but I also think she thinks very highly of him and respects him deeply, even if their personalities clash a bit.

i know they didn’t really get a chance to get to know each other while shannon was still alive, but do you ever think about the bond between buck and shannon? do you ever think about the “all the people i love most belonged to you first” of it all except in this instance it’s not a sad statement in the same way? it’s not a “i’m worried they will never love me as much as they love you” but rather it’s a “i’ve got them. i love them. i take care of them and i always will. because you can’t. and i’m so sorry you can’t.” because yes buck will never be a replacement - but at the same time, no one wanted this. shannon made a lot of mistakes, and so did eddie, but she didn’t deserve to die, chris didn’t deserve to grow up without a mother, eddie didn’t deserve to lose his first love, even if they wouldn’t have remained a romantic pairing as they found their footing in life.

there will always be an absence. always.

do you think buck goes to her grave sometimes? by himself? not as often as chris and eddie - but sometimes. and the first few times maybe he doesn’t quite know what to say, but eventually he grows more confident, and he starts confiding in her. “eddie is going through x, and i don’t really know how to help him, but i’m trying. i promise he’s going to be okay. i’m taking care of him.” or “chris wants x and y, but eddie and i want c” as if she’ll be able to weigh in? because she should be there to be allowed to weigh in?

i don’t have a conclusion to this but anyway

#sometimes i think maybe he visited her grave for the first time after eddie was shot #after he'd told chris but before eddie was awake #when he was mostly out of the woods but no enough for buck to feel truly at ease #because he can't think of anyone else who might truly understand the weight of losing eddie #of caring for christopher alone and trying so hard to keep everything as normal as possible while eddie is lying in a hospital bed #and while so many parts of buck are still afraid he'll never wake up and will be until he can hear his voice again #and no one else knows what that feels like #and maybe if he believes hard enough some remnant of shannon can bring eddie back to them #or at least give buck the strength to care for christopher the way he needs until eddie's parents inevitably come to take him away #that maybe buck—still so scared and broken—seeks out the one person he knows has felt it too #so. yeah. #i think about this a lot #evan buckley #shannon diaz #buckley diaz family #911

rewatched 7x05 in its entirety and the entire conversation buck has with maddie is SO funny from maddie's perspective. like.

The FIRST thing he says. NO OTHER CONTEXT. is that he lied to eddie and it's eating him up inside.

Maddie is sitting there thinking like oh boy. lied to eddie??? Ok. what's all this then.

Buck explains about being on a date, running into Eddie and Marisol etc etc etc and after Maddie rules out buck doing something TRULY wild like dating a celebrity or a married woman she's run out of possible options as to like. WHY did Buck lie to Eddie? So ofc she asks him, why did you did that.

Buck is like I don't know.

NOW IF IM MADDIE. sitting here wondering why my baby brother just lied to his bestie about being on a date for no apparent reason. like. She's GOT to be wondering, right??? She's gotta be like. Something has CHANGED between Buck and Eddie and Buck now, out of nowhere, seems to NOT want to tell Eddie he's dating someone. WHATS all this then.

Finally she gets the crucial piece of information that oh yeah, i was on a date with a guy, no big deal maddie NOT THE POINT. obviously i check out hot guys' asses CAN WE PLEASE FOCUS

now things are making sense again. Maddie's like, yeah actually, kind of the point. You felt weird about telling Eddie you were on a date with a guy when no one, not even you, even knew you were interested in guys before. that totally tracks, very reasonable actually.

except then. THEN. Buck reveals the second crucial piece of information. that the guy Buck was on a date with. was Tommy. as in BBPU double-u backslash TOMMY. TOMMY FROM THE CALENDAR TOMMY!!!!!! WHOM. LAST MADDIE CHECKED. IS BUCK'S SOLE RIVAL IN THE BATTLE FOR EDDIE'S ATTENTION THAT HE MADE UP IN HIS HEAD.

at this point, in maddie's head she's gotta be like. ah. my little brother has entered into some kind of insane gay psychodrama of triangulated desire the likes of which patricia highsmith could only dream of. and she's just like well. it seems that your problem might be that you were on a date with a man whom not one week ago you were competing with for your best friend's attention, and now you are lying to said best friend about it and THAT PART is what made you spiral so hard you showed up at my door like a guilty puppy. and frankly. as a woman who is happily nearly-married to the love of my life whom i have a three-year-old with i am not qualified to tell you what the FUCK it is you think you are doing here. so. you should tell eddie your feelings, which you still don't understand, at some point i guess! godspeed little brother
