But then, there’s a familiar cologne in the lamp oasis halls. A name in a newspaper that doesn’t belong. Someone gets overheated at the Community Pool, and three someone else’s go missing without a trace, and that’s only the beginning… or: a season 3 rewrite without the Russians, rats, or [redacted].

this has been said before but I feel like it is very important to view being kind as something you do rather than something that you are because all people have the capacity for meanness and cruelty and often use it inadvertently but the point is to change your behavior and your attitude and practice paying attention and being selfless and sincere and vulnerable and putting kindness and warmth into your actions and words instead of being like oh I value kindness and thus I am such a good person. like it’s about the attempt

hi firefly!! i love your work!! ive been showing a lot of love to california show your teeth lately (and its absolutely 1000% deserved!!!) but i also wanted to make sure you knew that i also love "i think there is someone (you love)" bc i was going back thru my bookmarks recently and discovered that it was You who wrote it and i was like :0 that fic is so crazy feel good and soso lovely and i still think abt the final scene w them all at the madonna concert having a blast ALL THE TIME. makes me wanna cry from joy every time 😭😭😭

I also had a question about CSYT: ao3 shows that there are gonna be 19 total chapters... will this be the complete story or will you be writing a sequel? I promise I'm not trying to get ahead of myself lol just curious!!!!

yes! so cali show ur teeth is 19 chaps (18 regular + an epilogue) and i am planning to continue it as a sequel if ppl are interested :) it's been a lot of fun playing in this little alternate universe, and i have a lot of extremely rough drafts for how my own version of s3 and potentially s4 would play out - but CSYT will be its own, completed story on its own as well

Hi! California Show Your Teeth absolutely blew my mind, it’s awesome! Like every character and the world itself is just so layered and captivating and feels so alive! It’s such a cool AU, thank you for writing and posting something so amazing. Not to mention all your other stories! You’re seriously one of my favorite authors in this fandom.

I also wanted to ask, if you want to answer, what’s your process for writing these super detailed and amazing stories?

oh :')))) thank you so much! that really means a lot <3

i.....love outlining. love love to outline. and usually, for larger works like this, i keep running lists of plot related to character growth (ex: will struggles his sexuality/powers), plot outside the pov characters' control (agents kidnapping will's friends), and plot within the pov characters' control that *ideally* links to their growth (will successfully teleports and helps his friends) - combining these helps form the basic structure of the plot! then you multiply that by the 12 pov characters dhfjzhdgfvjz

i also spend a lot of time, especially with so many characters in this one, figuring out who is with who, what they're doing, and which dynamics i want to focus on. that usually sparks more threads to pull at. also, their cars! i had a whole list of where everyone's cars were, who was driving which car, who was watching baby nick (sorry holly), why certain parents weren't looking for their kids, etc. i think that def helps add to the realism and layers

and (probably most importantly), i fully complete my fics before publishing. it's tough, because you don't get any feedback, but it lets me keep everything very tonally consistent, allows better foreshadowing i think , and even though I write chronologically, the first chapter probably changed the most from beginning to end, just because i figured out where i wanted to go!

anyway, that was a very long answer, but plot/outlines/fitting the puzzle pieces together is usually my favorite part, and i'm in the thick of it for the sequel right now -thank you again!! <3 <3

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…

‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.

‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.

even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.

I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.

fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.

idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

Are you able to vote in US elections? Because the preachy vote blue no matter who posts are really not where it's at, Neil, and if you can't vote in the states then it's doubly fucking annoying.

I'm sorry that it annoys you that I don't have a vote in the US: if it makes you feel better, I pay the vast majority of my taxes here, I live here, and more importantly my children and grandchildren live here and will grow up in whatever version of the US the courts and government create. The effect of the US on the rest of the planet is enormous.

So I'm going to use whatever platform I have to point out that voting matters. And that sometimes you hold your nose and decide who you're voting against.
