Week days in Gaeilge
Ey yo, just sharing stuff I learn here and there in my Irish Studies classes, just to share some knowledge.
Also, keeping notes for myself :^)
The format will be:
English - Gaeilge - Translates to, misc.
Day - Dé - Day or Day of
Monday - Dé Luain - Lunar Day, borrowed from the Latin luna for moon
Tuesday - Dé Máirt - Mars’ Day, in regards to Mars, the Roman god of war
Wednesday - Dé Céadaoin - Day of the First Fast, this was the first day of the week that the Christian monks would do their fasting. Comes from the word céad, which translates to first, and aoin, which means fasting
Thursday - Déardaoin - Day between fastings, I miswrote in my notes on this term, but if I recall correctly… While the monks were allowed to eat, they were forbidden from eating meat. Don’t quote me on this one, but I’d have to ask my prof for clarification
Friday - Dé hAoine - Day of the main fast
Saturday - Dé Sathairn - Saturn’s Day, referring to Saturn the Roman god
Sunday - Dé Domhnaigh - Day of the Lord, borrowed from the Latin dominus for lord.
