howdy fellow spuffy fans, y'all ever think about how spike constantly talks a big evil game but the first and only time he truly hurts buffy he immediately changes the very nature of his existence to make sure it never happens again?

#to kill this girl you have to love her #yeah i think about his i want to save the world speech a lot...vampires talk a big game #and all those times people ask why he hasn't killed her yet and his face. ouch. same with buffy wrt not being able to spike #and her reactions when people ask if she loves him. boy i die #ironically of course he only succeeds in hurting her after he's pledged his love and said 'i don't hurt you' #i want a giant parallels gifset but like time and effort... #it's just interesting and also ouch #i've seen angel described as a wolf in sheep's clothing (esp in his relationship arc with buffy) #but then i would add spike is a sheep in wolf's clothing (in terms of relationship to buffy) #reductive but a surface level working metaphor #pretty much all of buffy's other love interests succeed marvelously in hurting her consistently and constantly with and without intent #i need people to talk spuffy shop with. message me pls. pls #spuffy

I've been rewatching btvs and reading lots of academic papers & meta. imo, spike isn't an exception to the vampire rule; spike is proof that the rule doesn't exist. and if buffy accepts that...everything she knows is a lie. and if so, what has she been doing until now?

#i always think of the lie to me speech when it comes to this #this informs pretty much my entire reading of buffy herself from spike's confession on because talk about a horrifying paradigm shift #i think the show generally supports this too with later vampires #anyway i love the denial dance it hurts me #buffy straight up can't afford this knowledge. mmm spicy pain #this is mostly s5/s6 relevant i suppose #my musings

i love villain/heroine ships not because i want to see ~a redemption arc~ but because i love watching the villain unravel as he plays a game of How Low Can You Go w/ his morals in an effort to quench the thirst™, even though all the heroine wants to do is kick his bitch ass

This was always super funny on my first watch, but really meaningful/adorable on a rewatch, taking the lyrics into consideration. Talk about foreshadowing:
