A Good Morning ... for obvious reasons
I’ve started a tradition of sorts. Every payday, I stop by a bakery over in Plymouth and pick up a couple of donuts. The targeted donuts are the plain cake ones or the cake donuts with the chocolate frosting on them. Those are my two favorites. Of course, it sort of depends on when I get to the bakery. Basic rule of thumb with donuts: the longer the day goes, the variety and number of donuts…

Reading Till I Die
I texted my sister the other day telling her that I finished reading The Kingdom of Sweets: A Novel of the Nutcracker. It’s a novel written by Erika Johansen. The book is described as a reimagining of the classic tale The Nutcracker. It is to an extent. There were a couple of nutcrackers in it, but they didn’t really play a big part. The title land, The Kingdom of Sweets, wasn’t really a large…

Book vs Film: Leave the World Behind
This is something that I stopped doing a while back, but I wanted to bring it back because I love the discussion between which is better, the book or the film. So, I thought I’d start 2024 off with a 2023 film that is based off the book with the same title. Leave the World Behind was written by Rumaan Alam and released in 2020. I watched the film when it was released on Netflix in December 2023.…

2023 Reading Recap
This year, I was able to read 20 books. I had set a goal of reading 36, but there was a period in the middle of the year where I just fell out of the habit of reading. Having said that, for the most part, those 18 books didn’t disappoint me in quality, so I don’t see my not reaching 36 as a failure. Here are the categories I’ll be awarding. – Top Five Reads – Best Story – Best Moment – Best…

Movie Review: The Marvels (2023)
The Marvels (2023) was just okay. It wasn’t a bad film and most certainly wasn’t the worst film in the MCU, I’m looking at you The Eternals (2021) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). However, having said that, it was far from the best in the MCU. All in all, I think The Marvels will be a sort of forgettable MCU film, I’m looking at you Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). Going…

31 Days of Horror: Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Every year on Halloween, I watch Night of the Living Dead (1968). It’s a tradition of mine. I absolutely love this film. For so many reasons, this film tops my list of favorite horror films. It’s easily in my top five films of all time. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past 55 years, Night of the Living Dead is the film that started the entire Zombie genre. Directed by George A. Romero…

31 Days of Horror: Sleepaway Camp (1983)
What is it about summer camps that cause people to go on murder rages? Is it the fresh air? Or is it the lack of patience when faced with a plethora of irritating children? For Halloween Eve, I decided to watch Sleepaway Camp (1983). Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, this is such a bizarre film that if watched in today’s cultural lens is chalk full of problematic themes, scenes, and…

31 Days of Horror: Bad Things (2023)
I should’ve known that the movie was going to be a bad one. It said so in the title. Bad Things (2023) is written and directed by Stewart Thorndike. I should mention that spoilers are appearing starting in the next paragraph so beware. A group of friends (played by Gayle Rankin, Hari Nef, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Rad Pereira) decide to spend the weekend in the newly acquired abandoned…

31 Days of Horror: Totally Killer (2023)
Imagine you’ve got two friends fighting over which film to watch. One friend says, “Hey, Back to the Future is the perfect film.” Just when you’re about to load the time traveling movie into the DVD player, one of your other friends holds up a VHS copy of I Know What You Did Last Summer. The two friends start to bicker back and forth and then you tell them to shut up. They watch as you log into…

31 Days of Horror: The New York Ripper (1982)
Apparently, October 2023 is the month of the Slasher Film. Tonight, I watched The New York Ripper (1982). Directed by Lucio Fulci, this is a film that takes the generic plot of a serial killer in New York being tracked down by a burned-out NYPD detective but adds a stupid twist. The killer speaks in a Donald Duck voice. That’s right. A literal Donald Duck voice. The whole film is just weird. It…

31 Days of Horror: Prom Night (1980)
What does Leslie Nielsen, Jamie Lee Curtis, a wife of Michael Crichton, and child death have in common? That’s right, you guessed it! All of those are in the film Prom Night (1980). Written by William Gray and Robert Guza Jr. and directed by Paul Lynch, Prom Night is exactly what you might figure a horror film would be with that title. A group of kids were playing in an abandoned building, and…

31 Days of Horror: Summer of 84 (2018)
Image Stranger Things, but there’s no Upside Down. Instead of a Demogorgon killing people, it’s just a regular old serial killer. It’s still set in the 80s though. And there’s a love interest between the main character and an impossible to get girl. If you can image that, then you’ve got Summer of 84 (2018). Written by Matt Leslie and Stephen J. Smith, directed by François Simard, Anouk…

31 Days of Horror: My Best Friend's Exorcism (2022)
My Best Friend’s Exorcism: A Novel was written by Grady Hendrix in 2016. It was an excellent novel set in 1988. Two best friends Abby and Gretchen are skinny-dipping when something goes horribly wrong. Afterward, Gretchen begins to act differently. Abby starts to look into things and that’s when she finds out that her best friend is possessed by a devil. She enlists an exorcist to help heal her…

31 Days of Horror: Hell House, LLC (2015)
I like to watch YouTube videos that talk about the top [fill in the blank with whatever number you want] horror movies of all time. Or the top 10 or 20 scariest movies of all time. Something along those lines. The reason why I watch them is to see if I’ve seen the films and agree with the YouTuber’s assessment. I have never, in my adult life, watched a film that has been successful in terrifying…

31 Days of Horror: Creep 2 (2017)
I first heard about the film Creep (2014) from a coworker of mine in 2015. The film was about a young videographer that answers an online ad for a one-day job in a remote town to record the last messages of a dying man. He soon finds out that the dude is a stalker and serial killer. The film ends with the guy killing the videographer. I absolutely loved the film because it was so crazy. The cast…

31 Days of Horror: Revenge (2017)
After watching eight parts of the Friday the 13th franchise, it’s nice to actually watch a film that’s honestly really good. I needed a break from the unstoppable Jason Voorhees, so I decided to watch Revenge (2017) for Day #21 of 31 Days of Horror. Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, Revenge is a film about Jen (played by Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz) and Kevin (played by Kevin Janssens).…

31 Days of Horror: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
What a horrible way to spend two hours. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) is the worst film in the franchise. Filled with stereotypical teenagers, horrible effects, a cheap Jason death, unexplainable logic, and much more than I care to explain. Basically, Jason gets awakened by electricity and rises from the depths of Crystal Lake. He kills two teenagers doing it on a…
