it's been years and it's still genuinely crazy to me that the first two seasons of stranger things had this throughline where all the bad things that were happening in hawkins were directly caused by the us government and that they were excusing the awful things they were doing to their own citizens (children!) through cold war/red scare reactionism. and then in season three there was a secret russian base under the town mall.

I'd argue the only scenes that could qualify as horror are in season 1. The show's been getting progressively less horror each season. Clumsy references to 80s horror movies like knock off Freddy Kreuger doesn't count as actual horror. Over s3-s4 Stranger Things was turned full into a superhero show spliced with Riverdale light teen drama series, with obvious references to horror and sci-fi works sprinkled on top for show.

i know stranger things has horror elements i know in my brain that it's described as a science fiction horror drama television series on wikipedia and i see the horror elements i see them but i can't make myself think of it as a horror thing, show, i was gonna say i've tried it and i failed but i haven't even tried i know it wouldn't work. when someone talks about how st is a horror show i'm like right...

S1 and s2 (but especially s1) feel so intimate and grounded and personal. I am watching these character’s lives.

But s3 and s4 (ESPECIALLY s3) feels fake and removed. I’m watching a tv show.

I really do like Ted Lasso but, having been obsessed with football since I was six years old, it’s an increasingly weirdly hard watch seeing the things they miss/get wrong about the football world. I don’t mean in a nitpicky way, but in a “oh if they’d played that realistically it would’ve made a great storyline” way. It’s happened more and more in s2 and s3 I feel.

Biggest one for me is the whole thing with Sam’s protest against the main sponsor, that had the makings of a great complex plot line but then they whiffed on it when the team’s protest had no consequences. In real life that protest would’ve both been admired but also had huge financial and legal ramifications for the club, and without Richmond facing any they really just removed all the stakes out of the whole thing.

#they also get lots of stuff really right ofc even small details which is delightful #but some of the stuff i think is a shame they miss #there's also smaller stuff like chelsea wouldn't have zava sign the actual deal live on air #also i get that west ham is the club they got a deal with to use for nate in s3 but #hearing characters talk about west ham like it's a top 4 club is hilarious lmao #but nate the great going full mourinho for his villain turn is amazing #ted lasso

THE BOY WHO CAME BACK TO LIFE

The former missing child Will Byers has been found after a week of searching. He’s presently in stable condition in Hawkins General Hospital. Byers’ mother, Joyce Byers, alleges that Will was the subject of a secret government program run by the Hawkins National Laboratory. The allegation comes amidst a massive investigation into the hidden organization and its elaborate experimentation in perusal of mind control. The abuse detailed in the first report includes prolonged physical duress and psychological interrogation. This government sanctioned torture has provoked outrage amongst the American people.

“Mind control? Government sanctioned torture? This is just outrageous,” her dad mutters from behind the paper.

“Just to think, all this going on right here in Hawkins, right on our doorstep! The things they hide from us,” her mom sighs.

“Here I thought the Church Committee was supposed to have weeded out this sort of thing,” dad grumbles.

“What’s the Church Committee?” She wonders.

“Hm? Some senate hearings during Nixon. When we found out about MKULTRA and other things they were up to back in the 50s and 60s. Stuff just like what they’re writing about now. They were supposed to have stopped long ago. This is just unbelievable.”

“Huh.”

In a way it almost tickles her that for once their father sounds almost upset and a bit angry. At the government no less. She’s so used to him being laconic to the point where he always seems to function in slow motion compared to the rest of the world. But even he is shaken up in his own way by what’s happened. She wonders how school will be today. She wonders how people in town will react. She wonders how the country and the world will react.

She wonders what Jonathan’s doing right now. She wonders what Barb’s parents are thinking right now. She wonders how long it will be before she stops getting chills, her stomach dropping and she has to blink away tears as soon as any fleeting thought of Barb pops into her head.

“How did you sleep honey?” Mom suddenly asks, changing the subject.

“Fine,” she lies.

I will be eternally upset that the scene with Nancy and Jonathan driving home from Murray’s in season two was cut. I would have loved to hear their conversation and see them reveal their true feelings for each other. And just look at how soft her face is in the picture, I just know it would have been such a touching moment 😭

Imma say this again: I hope that Jonathan and Steve are never friends. I don’t need Jonathan being all “king Steve!” Like everyone else. Steve is obnoxious, and I need one character to remain blah about him. Let that be Jonathan.

Little asshole was hitting on his girlfriend all season… and y’all want them to be friends? Steve doesn’t respect Jonathan.

I hope we don’t get any scenes of them interacting.
