The way this show just fucks with gender. The cake topper, Jim's facial hair, "mermaid/merman/merperson" Stede, literally just Ed, Wee John and Izzy and Jim in drag, Mary Read being clearly butch/butch adjacent, the earrings, just Stede's whole thing in general.

I'm rewatching OFMD while I work today so I'm going to put a new observation for each episode - something I hadn't noticed before this rewatch.

For 1x1, I noticed Stede's habit of picking up pirate phrases - Buttons uses the phrase "hand to hand" to refer to combat and Stede repeats it in the next scene when he's talking to Jim and Oluwande. He's the epitome of fake it til you make it.
