Tο Κέντρο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης στη Θεσσαλονίκη ξεκινά ένα κύκλο διαλέξεων σχετικά με την πειραματική μουσική, στο οποίο συμμετέχει και η moremars team, μαζί με αξιόλογους μουσικούς και φίλους όπως οι Μιχάλης Σιγανίδης, Κωστής Δρυγιανάκης, Δανάη Στεφάνου, Epavlispavlakis, Αλέξη Πορφυριάδη, emdy & auberg1ne και την Granny Records. Αναλυτικά το πρόγραμμα των διαλέξεων είναι αναρτημένο στο site του Κρατικού Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης. Οι διαλέξεις απευθύνονται σε όλους, και ιδιαίτερα σε όσους επιθυμούν να διευρύνουν τα εκφραστικά τους μέσα και τις θεωρητικές τους γνώσεις σε σχέση με την σύγχρονή μουσική.

The Greek State Museum of Thessaloniki organizes a seminar about experimental music in Greece. Moremars team will participate the seminars, presenting a lecture about Greek experimental DIY movement from the late 80s until today. Also there would be organized a sound workshop. Other artists that will participate the seminars is:

Costis Drygianakis, Anastasios Kokkinidis (aka emdy ) & Kleanthis Karapiperis (aka auberg1ne), Michalis Siganidis, Paulos Vakalos (aka Epavlispavlakis), Aleksis Porfiiadis, Granny Records and Danae Stefanou.

The recording starts with really thick sounding static-like noise. To put it poetically/metaphorically, persistent middle spectrum frequencies fade in along with heavily distorted echoes of really distant beats and crashes on otherworldly surfaces. And this is what popped in mind a few minutes into it. It sounds like something is happening in the presence of a machine, maybe a household one. It could be a vacuum cleaner or it could be a jet plane. There is no scale in sound, there is space but space can be deceiving. There is so much activity in the background that I can not really identify the source (I later read that this is probably detuned radio). After almost eight ear pounding minutes it becomes even more violent as it is enriched with one more layer followed by low frequency noise after a few minutes white/brown noise whatever. The track fades out in the end. This description evolved into a kind of objective approach or something, maybe more than necessary.

This release from the resdatcom label comes as a 3 inch cdr in folded and glued paper in the same size that for my reading of this untitled album supplements the concept of the album by one-man noise project RU/ST. RU/ST comes from Zaporozhie in East-Ukraine and he is  also the owner of HMF Graphics. 

I was lucky enough to receive one of  the first 15 copies in which the cover  is a fullcolour print with blockprinted logo stenciled on the front panel and that was really important as i will try to explain in demystifying or even more mystifying this release.

The cover has been methodically treated to remind the texture of rust on metal.  I don’t really care that this is not real rust. I believe that this is exactly the wrong path to follow in order to understand this work. Maybe you don't have to understand this work and just enjoy or something but then you don't need to read a review, go find the thing, scroll down and visit the resonan site. I believe that the way that the cover is treated as a simulation is conceptually intended to be like that. Its not a accident of sorts. It is the point punctuated with the project's name. That of the use of metaphors in trying to communicate a specific feeling. And words are nothing closer to feelings but rust to metal. Feelings could be understood as irrational reflexes on situations that are too complicated to rationalise. Feelings effect in going beyond the stillness of time that comes with rationalisations and allow us to respond, to transcend our inertia which is stillness. Rust is the only natural becoming of metal, a reaction to specific environmental conditions. It can’t exist on its own, it corrupts the element but at the same time functions as a testimony of its substance. I understood the recording in the same manner. Not as distorted but as corruptive of the sources, noise is not the point, the point is the process, this work focuses in its making but not a procedural way, a hands on, realtime, time-ful making that vibrated the body, that makes the ears bled.

Personally I consider reviewing limited edition releases  a heavy responsibility. Sometimes I believe that these words could be a more far reaching testimony than the recordings themselves. It’s an honour for me but they kind of bring to mind eulogies.

Η πρόταση για την συνδιοργάνωση μιας ακόμη συναυλίας στον Αυτοδιαχειριζόμενο χώρο του Θεάτρου Εμπρός ξεκίνησε με αφορμή των δύο προηγούμενων live που είχαν πραγματοποιηθεί στο χώρο, με την βοήθεια του εργαστηρίου Παραστατικών Τεχνών και σαφώς των σχημάτων που είχαν εμφανιστεί. Συγκεκριμένα, για τις 27 Σεπτέμβρη, η ιδέα έπεσε από τους Mama Luma οι οποίοι θα παρευρίσκονται στην Αθήνα για ένα προγραμματισμένο live στο Boiler την Παρασκευή. Όπως αποδειχτικέ στη πράξη αυτό αποτέλεσε μόνο την αφορμή ώστε τελικά να μαζευτούμε και άλλοι μουσικοί και μη, της ανεξάρτητης σκηνής. Χαίρομαι που θα βρεθούμε όλοι μαζί οι Mama Luma, Κωστής Δρυγιανάκης, Virilio, Ps Stambs Back, Σάββας Μεταξάς & Σπύρος Εμμανουηλιδης, Νίκος Κυριαζόπουλος, Μob, Narog, POP tektonism, Idiot Stroszek, F:ousies, This Is Past, Adam_is και ο Νικόλας. Για την moremars αυτό θα είναι και το τελευταίο live στο οποίο εμπλεκόμαστε για φέτος. Θέλω να το βλέπω σαν μια μεγάλη γιορτή ή ίσος ως ένα αποχαιρετιστήριο πάρτι (;), ίσος και σαν μία γενέθλια γιορτή που δεν έχουμε κάνει ποτέ για τα 7 χρόνια δράσης του label (;) ... δεν έχει και πολύ σημασία άλλωστε. Τα λέμε εκεί.

Οι Mama Luma είναι ένα σχήμα από την Θεσσαλονίκη και απαρτίζονται από τους Χρήστο Γερμένογλου στα ντραμς και τα κρουστά, τον Παύλο Παυλίδη στο άλτο σαξόφωνο και τον Χάρη Αγορίτσα στο τενόρο σαξόφωνο. Μουσικά κινούνται στο χώρο του αυτοσχεδιασμού και της free jazz. Mohammad - Zo Rèl Do (CD/LP, 2014, Antifrost)

Mohammad is a Greek trio, who consists of Nikos Veliotis, Ilios and Coti K, all of them been recognized internationally for their solo music careers. As Mohammad, they are working on the principles of inter-modulation between electronic and acoustic sources. Zo Rèl Do is their forth full length album and it is the first volume of a trilogy that explores the sound of geographical area between 34°Ν - 42°Ν & 19°Ε - 29°Ε, which is the region between Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria. The album starts with a field recording of a crowded place (market place?) that unintentionally reminds me some of the recording of the ethnomusicologist researcher Deben Bhattacharya in Asia. The following tracks are characterized by a heavy drone instrumentation using contra-bass, cello, electric double bass and some electronics. Mohammad explores the acoustics of space, filling it with strong vibrations and doom like resonances. Playing slow and steadily they create a religious atmosphere and repetitive sound patterns, deeply inspired by the Greek traditional music.

Coagul – La Roda De La Justicia (LP, 2013, Magia Roja)

Marc O’Callaghan is a Catalan illustrator artist and musician. Coagul is his solo sound project, exploring the limits of industrial music, using synthesizers, voice and bells. Been active from 2009, Marc has released some very obscure works, in various formats, most of them published in Spanish small run labels. La Roda De La Justicia comes out as a solid red colored vinyl LP accompanied with some very characteristic art illustrations made by Marc and a detailed inlay cart in red color. This album includes eight tracks that were formed over the years 2009 to 2012. Coagul here, maintains a good level of minimal geometric music forms, using repetitive noise parts and half-clean vocals in Catalan. This music explores the sonic torture soundscape and the limits of the sound equipment, searching amidst the stylistic territories of Post-Industrial and bands like throbbing gristle.

The Tenses – Howard (LP, 2014, audioMER)

The Tenses is a duo comprised of Ju Suk Reet Meate and Jackie Oblivia, known most for their participation in Smegma, the American experimental noise group formed in Pasadena, California in 1973. Howard includes three compositions that it was made in Smegma’s studio in Portland, Oregon in 2011 and a live concert recording. This new project is exploring sound and space, using turntables, reel-to-reel machines, electronics, distorted surf guitar, coronet etc. It's a bit unclear what you listen about, a pretty chaotic collage of sounds, radio signals, looped voices, sound effects and instruments that creates a real obscure atmosphere. What we’ve got here is a unique cacophony in terms of psychedelic free-jazz noise and avant garde. This is a great sound experience of a multi-textured pattern of a distinctly idiosyncratic idiom of music.

Dave Phillips & Aspec(t) – Medusa (CD, 2014, noise below/)

Dave Phillips has been sonically active for over 25 years, with a great number of releases and collaborations with artists like Francisco Meirino, The New Blockaders, Rudolf Eb.er etc. Dave was the co-founder of the Swiss hardcore-extremists Fear of God in 1987, after that he started his solo music carrier as an activist performer. Aspec(t) are SEC_ and Mario Gabola from Italy. They make free improvisation/noise music, using tape recorders, computer, contact mics, resonant drums etc. Medusa is a conceptual project CD inspired from a sentence from George Monbiot’s article “Feeding Frenzy” that says “The jellyfish represents the collapse of the ecosystem and the spinelessness of the people charged with protecting it”. Source material was recorded at The Basement, in Napoli, in April 2011. Sonically, this is a pure sample of musique concrete, quite atmospheric with a lot of interposed periods of abstract sounds, noise, and field recordings. Well structured compositions with a notion of temporality and cinematic continuity. Great stuff!
