Ran a session 0 for Gubat Banwa last night and, like, I haven't fallen in love with a ttrpg since I was a kid. But every time I read a page or two of Gubat Banwa, I'm just delighted and flabbergasted and astounded. As Rath put it, "If it was just a phenomenal anticolonial setting it'd be sick. But the game also fucking rips." I have a warrior who kills people with a soccer ball, an asshole poet who forces folks to attack them and is also impervious to their attacks, and a fucking headtaker that picks a motherfucker to just delete before swiveling their gaze to their next victim.

Oh, and also the heir to the Dawn Eater Crown simultaneously ships two of them and wants to kill the person who murdered one of the pair's father (which happens to be the other person in the pairing). And the local Raj also ships the pairing. And one of the PCs is in love with a different one, not in the pair. And all of that just flowed out of character creation. I have to build a goddamn relationship chart to keep track of all the soap opera relationship stuff. It's incredible.

Genichiro Ashina (a Gubat Banwa Chief inspired by Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice)

The leader of Ashina's armed forces, Genichiro was a simple peasant boy who was adopted by Isshin Ashina, the Sword Saint, as his grandson. Grateful for this act, Genichiro would devote himself, body and soul, to the preservation of the Ashina estate. Despite being an accomplished samurai, Genichiro is a pragmatic man first and foremost, and some have even commented that his methods resemble those of shinobis more than those of his fellow samurais.

DISCLAIMER: I never had the opportunity to play Gubat Banwa to the point of fighting Chief enemies. Take the balancing of this guy with a huge grain of salt

Prowesses

HP: 6/7/8 per Kadungganan Speed: 5; Jump: 3 Bravery: 8/9/10 Faith: 3/4/5 Posture: 4/5/6 Resilience: 1/2/3

Traits

Rejuvenating Waters. Genichiro needs to withstand 7 Wounds in order to be Defeated.

Ashina Must Be Preserved. When an opponent makes Genichiro use his last Poise Token, he can attack a fighter adjacent to him with Bravery.

Shed Humanity Itself. While Genichiro has 0 HP, he gains 2 additional Beats and the ability to use 2 Techniques/Riff.

Inflict Violence: Floating Passage. Genichiro attacks an adjacent enemy with Bravery. If he scores 0 Hits after cancelling, gain 1 Block.

Techniques Note: only one technique can be used per Riff

Between Honor and Victory [2]. Genichiro attacks a fighter in 6 range with Bravery. If the fighter has healed someone during their last Riff, this attack gains +1d.

The following techniques are only available for Genichiro, Way of Tomoe and Genichiro, Pitiful Grandchild.

Heresy [1]. Genichiro flies to an opponent in range 3 and attacks with Bravery. The attack inflicts bleeding.

Lightning of Tomoe [2]. Genichiro attacks all fighters in an area (range 3 path 4) with Faith, shocking them and leaving them wide open.

Mortal Draw [3]. Genichiro attacks all enemies in an area (blast 2) with Bravery. If an opponent is hit after cancelling, both Genichiro and they gain 1 Wound.

Phase 1: Heir of Ashina.

1-4: Rush > Inflict Violence > Rush

5-8: Rush > Between Honor and Victory [2]

Phase 2: Way of Tomoe. Triggers automatically when Genichiro only has a 3rd of his total HP. Genichiro gains +1 Speed, Jump, and Faith, as well as -1 Posture.

1-3: Rush > Inflict Violence > Inflict Violence

4-5: Rush > Lightning of Tomoe [2]

6-7: Rush > Heresy [1] > Shove

8: Mortal Draw [3]

Phase 3: Pitiful Grandchild. Triggers automatically when Genichiro has 0 HP and Shed Humanity Itself is active.

1-3: Rush > Inflict Violence > Inflict Violence > Shove > Deflect

4-5: Rush > Lightning of Tomoe [2] > Rush > Inflict Violence

6-7: Rush > Heresy [1] > Shove > Between Honor and Victory [2]
