just saw a review of mary shelley’s frankenstein that complained it was predictable. maybe i’m being annoying, but i don’t think that’s a valid critique for a piece of classic literature.
it’s predictable because it created an entire new genre and any “formulaic” aspects is because shelley created the formula. it is baked in to your favorite media. your ability to “predict” is because it’s culturally significant, not because it’s poorly written
i just heard the phrase “if you wouldn’t trust their advice, don’t trust their criticism” for the first time and i don’t think i’ve ever needed to hear anything more

Sorry for the confusion, I was just copy/pasting the text from the tweet.
imagine you start watching this new show and it’s a silly little show about space set in the future then they announce the next season so you wait excitedly for five months and finally it’s here… you all sit round the tv and suddenly one of the main characters who is known for being unemotional starts going mad because of “biology…” and you slowly realise that he needs to have sex or he’s going to die so the other main character risks his entire career to help him out then they start ‘wrestling’ on the sand and the one going through the mating fever ends up killing the other guy which ends the fever but now he’s depressed because he just killed his best friend but wait he’s not actually dead the unemotional one is overjoyed everything’s fine and then they go back to work like nothing happened… you look at everyone else sitting in stunned silence thinking “did any one else think that was a little… yknow” then you accidentally start modern fandom and shipping culture
I think the “can trans men say tranny” discourse is so funny because like what am I mean to say to transphobes who call me tranny. Am I meant to go “erm actually I’m a trans man! Not a trans women - and only trans women get called tranny. Please call me faggot instead.”
if i was a famous internet person people wrote weird rpf about i wouldn’t avoid it i’d be in the comments picking it apart like “i wouldn’t say that” “my boobs don’t look like that” “i wouldn’t fuck like that” “stop writing, ugly”
