Understudy of the week: Simon Shorten
This week’s understudy of the week I have chosen to highlight is the incredible Simon Shorten!
Simon plays the role of the Entertainer and Sergei in Matilda the musical and also covers the villainous role of Miss Trunchbull! Having seen him play all of these roles, I can say that he is an incredible performer. He has covered the role of trunchball many many times, and always receives great support which is wonderful to see.

‘Simon Shorten took on the role of Trunchball for this performance and he is incredible. This is both a funny and a sinister role, and he was able to show both sides effortlessly. He had the audience laughing one moment then hanging on his every word the next. I was sat in the front row seat beside the aisle and I will admit to jumping in my seat as he crept up the aisle. A brilliant performance of such a huge role. I am thankful that he received such a huge cheer at the curtain call, it is always good to see an understudy get the respect they deserve’ (from my review of Matilda June 2018)

Understudy of the Week: Charlotte O’Rourke
Currently staring in Mamma Mia! in the West End, Charlotte O’Rourke plays the role of Ali, one of Sophie’s best friends. But Charlotte also regularly covers the leading role of Sophie in this all singing, all dancing spectacular. She shines in the role, showing why understudies should never be underestimated. She also played both Ali and Sophie on the UK Tour. Having seen her perform as Sophie and as Ali, I have to say that she is simply a wonderful performer.
‘With lovely vocals, a great stage presence and a wonderful sense of comedic timing, O’Rourke impressed endlessly in this role and it was great to see another take on the character. She was able to convey the rollercoaster of emotion that Sophie goes through all whilst being wonderfully lovable and adorable.‘ (My review of Mamma Mia from 11-12-18)
‘Charlotte O’Rourke plays the role of Ali, and is first cover Sophie. She also played these roles previously on the international and UK Tour. Having seen her play both roles in the west end, I have to say that she delights as both characters.’ (My stage stars of 2018 blog)

Understudy of the Week!
Understudies are superheroes, without them we wouldn't have theatre and that is not a world I want to live in. So I have decided that every week, I will pick a performer to highlight, a performer that understudies another role. They deserve credit, and I have seen some amazing understudies over the years.
Watch this space!
