Making every other fantasy race except for humans a monoculture isn't just lazy, but actively robbing yourself of a wealth of story depth. Give them cultures with distinct nuances about things a human would have no idea about. Elves whose invisible and extremely nuanced cultural cues are not only incredibly subtle, but vary from one elven line to another, so something that would be considered a remarkably tactful and delicate choice in one elven house would be an atrocious insult in another.
Goblin clan feuds about The Sacred Bug - they all agree that this specific species of beetle is sacred to the Goblin Gods, but the question is whether it is taboo to eat it, or whether it would be blasphemy to not eat this bug that was specifically gifted to goblinkind by the gods. Can You Eat The Bug -wars are torrid affairs that can last generations. There's a theory that there are two different goblin gods who appear as the same one, and have deliberately given their own respective clans contradictory instructions about the bug just to fuck with them. Everyone who has ever asked a goblin about this theory has been bit.
Dwarves who have different regional measures for different ground depths. There's a confusion within a construction crew digging a new tunnel with some of the foreign builders using words like "first cracks deep" for something that's not a measure that's in use in the dwarvish universal metric system. And then it turns out that different dwarves from different areas are used to different kinds of bedrock that cracks at different levels, and they also disagree with each other about how deep is "first cracks deep".
And the Mason Master of the projct throws his pickaxe in the tunnel wall in frustration and goes "alright the next one of you to say some utter fucking hillbilly bullshit gets their ass beat so bad that your mother's beard falls off."

ppl will say "demisexual and demiromantic apply to literally everyone why is it a label" and then play smash or pass, see people on the street and comment to their friends how attractive they are, meet someone at a bar and ask them on a date, start talking to someone in the hopes that it will end up sexual/romantic one day
like bro. an actual lack of attraction until a serious connection has formed is not the same thing as wanting to get to know someone before you have sex or date them.

Miscellaneous thoughts about Lily Evans’ letter to Sirius Black
Lily says James is the one who thinks Harry’s flying is funny and then talks about they’ve got precautionary measures but then in the picture James is running around after Harry and she’s laughing at them which means 1) They have similar senses of humour and 2) Lily likes to pretend that she’s more responsible than James but they’re both silly in complementary ways
Lily thinks the vase Petunia got her for Christmas was horrible but does not know that her poor son will be receiving such lovely presents as a toothpick and a single tissue from Petunia later
Lily understands James well enough to not only notice when he’s hiding frustration but also to know that the one person who could cheer him up other than his immediate family is Sirius
Lily doesn’t seem to disapprove of the idea of ‘little excursions’ and in fact seems to view them as positive thing re: James’s mindset, which makes me think that perhaps it’s a family activity? Like the Potters walking around the park under the Cloak with Harry in their arms
Lily doesn’t mention Remus once in her letter which makes me think that they were already out of frequent contact by Harry’s first birthday or that Sirius already believed Remus was the spy and she didn’t want to bring up a sore subject
Lily uses semi-colons in her casual letters what a nerd
She’s also a fan of asides because she’ll add little comments in parenthesis ‘(no complaints here)’ or with a hyphen
She doesn’t shy away from using people’s names - James, Harry, Petunia, Dumbledore, which makes me think that her use of ‘Padfoot’ and ‘Wormy’ were more out of affection than to encrypt her letters, which is in line with her nicknaming when she was younger like ‘Tuney’ and makes me wonder if she ever used any nickname for James

One side effect of my research for this novel being steeped heavily in textile history is my swelling disgust with modern fabrics.
Firstly they're so thin? Like most things you see in Old Navy or even department stores might as well be tissue paper?? Even some branded sports t-shirts I've bought in recent years (that are supposed to be 'official apparel' and allegedly decent quality) are definitely not going to hold up more than a year or two without getting little holes from wear.
This side of even two hundred years ago fabrics were made to be used for YEARS, and that's with wearing them way more often because you only owned like three sets of clothes. They were thick and well made and most importantly made to LAST. And they were gorgeous?? Some of the weaves were so fine and the drape so buttery we still don't entirely know how these people managed to make them BY HAND. Not to mention intricate patterning and details that turned even some simple garments into freaking ART.
I know this is not news, the fast fashion phenomenon is well documented. Reading so much about the amazing fabrics we used to create and how we cherished and valued them, though, is making it hard not to mourn what we lost to mass production and capitalism. Not just the quality of the clothing and fabrics themselves, but the generations of knowledge and techniques that are just gone. It makes me what to cry.
I need to get a sewing machine.

headcanon that walburga would confiscate James’ letters to Sirius because she thought he was a bad influence. and one day during ootp, buckbeak was rustling around in her room and Sirius found a fat stack of yellowed, unopened twenty-year-old letters. for one afternoon, he wasn’t just remembering conversations with James. It was like he was having new ones.
